You will probably not be surprised to discover that our favourite show at this year’s London Fashion Week was the Orla Kiely Autumn Winter presentation, held at the imposing yet impressive Central Saint Martins Building.
While waiting for the presentation to begin, we were handed some tea (it really was our kind of fashion show!) and admired the view, which left us all in a tizzy. Vintage street lamps, benches, old fashioned microphones and a clever projection of raindrops and cobble stones all helped to set the charming scene for the very aptly named ‘It’s raining cats and dogs’ collection.
The packed showcase was inspired by the French 60’s musical “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg“, which is going straight on our Lovefilm list for our next sleepover. It was sound-tracked by a catchy melodic mash-up of xylophones, rain effects and meowing cats, which concluded with a soulful live version of “Singing in the Rain”. It was all just so pretty and we loved watching the models dodge the puddles, sit wistfully on the bench and use their newspaper to shelter from the rain. It was a delightful, romantic affair and the purrfect homage to the British weather!
As for the collection, it was totally dreamy. There was certainly nothing ruff on display! Well, apart from Orla Kiely’s adorable dog Ivy who was the star of the show! The collection combines a selection of our favourite things, cats, dresses, collars and tights, it made us question if Orla Kiely is a secret She and Hem follower! The patterns, textures and colour combinations were subtle and feminine, with Orla Kiely’s trademark nod to the 60’s. Most importantly of all, the pieces were not just beautiful but wearable too.
The styling was also flawless, with white tights, pastel coats, printed umbrellas and ridiculously adorable animal bags (not just cats and dogs!) proving standouts for us. We were also offered a glimpse of the next Orla Kiely for Clarks collection and are pleased to report that the Autumn/Winter collaboration neatly picks up where Spring/Summer left off. By that we mean it’s even more fabulous.
So dear Hemsters, are you crazy about cats or deeply dippy about dogs? We can honestly say we want it all……….and that includes Ivy!
