Jump for Joy on New Year’s Eve

She and Hem | Jump for JoyShe and Hem | Jump for JoyShe and Hem | Jump for Joy

New Year’s Eve is THE night to get seriously sparkly. Whether you are planning a big night throwing shapes to Taylor Swift or a night in with friends with hot dogs and the Hootenanny, it is perfectly acceptable to go all out fancy! Sequins, sheer and sparkles, we just can’t get enough! When the clock strikes twelve, we want to be the girls reflecting off of the glitter ball.

Not only does this post feature balloons, bunting and bubbles but also our perfect New Year’s Eve party frocks. Victoria choose the zingy neon pink metallic Cyrus dress* and Jo picked the gorgeous fit and flare style Prova Heart dress*, both from Louche at Joy. Joyous! Victoria’s white tights are from UK Tights*, worn with gold heels from Office and a mighty mouse clutch from Primark. Jo’s glimmering gold glitter tights are from Topshop, worn with a black and gold cardigan from Fever*, gold heels from Dune and an exceptionally photogenic camera bag from Accessorize.

Happy New Year!

All Hail the January Sale

Merry Boxing Day one and all! Did you all have a suitably brilliant Christmas? Don’t drop your phone in the Bath….

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

What happens when you challenge two bloggers to have a swell day out on a £100 budget? They have a day full of macaroons, mulled wine and markets of course!

We recently accepted a challenge set by Huawei, who are celebrating the launch of the Ascend Y550 smartphone, to show what we consider to be an excellent day out in the UK. We both quickly agreed that a day trip to Bath would be just the ticket! Bath is one of our favourite places in the South West, especially at Christmas time when the city comes alive thanks to the sights and smells of the Bath Christmas Markets. Bath is truly buzzing, but this isn’t just due to the markets, oh no, there is so much more to see…

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We started the day the only way we know how, coffee and cake (and smashed avocado on toast, obvs). Having only previously been to the recently opened Colonna and Hunter for a cheeky 1/3, we decided to pay them an early morning visit as we had heard wonderful things about their food. We planned our day over a couple of flat whites and, as you can see, with all that caffeine our ‘To Do’ list got a little bit ambitious! Although, apart from the cat cuddling, I think we managed to tick everything off! We apologise to all of the cats of Bath that didn’t get cuddles that day…our bad. We then went for a little stroll around the Royal Crescent to pick out our future estates and then, after at least 12 minutes of exercise, we were swiftly back into the other Colonna, Colonna and Small’s, for more caffeine. It’s a hard life.

One of the highlights of our bonza Bath day was the wonderful Bath Artisan Market, where we finally had chance to meet Amy Laws (there’s only one, after all), a lovely and super talented lady whose dresses we often feature on She and Hem! They are so blooming good! Unfortunately it was the last market of the year but, never fear, they start again in February and we would totally recommend that you pop along if you are ever browsing in Bath. We’ll be dreaming of those mincepie macaroons from Marilyn’s for a very long time to come (thankfully we bought quite a few to keep us going!) and Oscar the cat by Ben Rothery is now at the very top of our Christmas lists (see, we did cuddle a cat after all!). It was then time for a delicious roast and a mulled cider at the Bath Brew House before heading off in search of more festive frivolity!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We rounded off our day with a look around the lovely Bath Christmas Market, which had quietened down after a busy day of trading. Bath is such a picturesque city anyway but exploring the 170(ish, apparently) wooden chalets selling everything from local cheeses to wooden ties is a charming experience and, with a mulled wine in hand, a lovely way to spend a crisp December evening. We left laiden with goodies from Speckled Wood, My Bear Hands and some yummy blackcurrant rum liqueur from Friary Liqueurs. A merry Christmas indeed!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

Do you think you could have a better time than we did for £100? I know it’s QUITE the ask but the very kind people at Huawei are feeling the Christmas spirit (or perhaps have just been drinking them) as they would like to offer one of you the chance to win your own super stylish Ascend Y550 4G smartphone and £100 if you share your itinerary in the comments below! Good luck everyone!

A Heartfelt blog post

Today we are going to share with you a true Bristol hidden gem in the shape of Heartfelt Vintage. This beautiful boutique and cafe very often feels like a local best kept secret due to the fact it is neatly nestled away on Alma Vale road in Clifton, just off the beaten track and the hustle and bustle of Whiteladies Road.  If you haven’t been before, it’s a truly unique and beautiful space at which we have both been guilty of playing dress-up on more than one occasion!

It was recently taken over by a new owner, the lovely Kate, who clearly has a fantastic passion for vintage fashion and also for providing customers with an experience as well as a service. She kindly invited us to attend a Making and Makeover day, which marks a new direction for Heartfelt as she looks to put on more events.

On arrival we were invited to take a look around the store and to start putting together an outfit to be styled later in the day. As we were first to arrive, we got straight to work looking through the many stunning pieces on offer. Kate has curated a wonderful collection of vintage and vintage inspired pieces and we were truly spoiled for choice! Everything is so pretty and we created a bit of a fashion storm in the changing rooms!

After we had chosen our outfits we were introduced to Able Mabel, who gave us a masterclass in how to make the perfect 1950s style fascinator. She had laid out all the pretty bits and bobs we needed and talked us through the process. Neither of us are particularly crafty but actually found this to be really good fun and are both pleasantly surprised with our handiwork (the blue and red efforts above). It was rather lovely all sitting around the table together and sewing, whilst drinking bubbly darling, and proved the perfect task to complete whilst having a good old natter.

After all that hard work it was time to reward ourselves with a spot of yummy lunch from the Heartfelt menu. They make most of their food from scratch which really adds to the homely comforting vibe of the store and, we can now confirm, is delicious. Once we had been suitably fed and watered it was time for Able Mabel (a woman of many talents!) to transform our tresses and for makeup artist Evie Smith to work her magic on our sleepy Sunday faces! We were then given our styled looks to put on and, with that, we were transformed!

she and hem | heartfeltshe and hem | heartfelt vintage she and hem | heartfelt vintage

And, as you hopefully agree, it was quite the makeover indeed! We LOVED our new vintage looks and giggled a lot at how doll-like we suddenly appeared! We would definitely like a team of people to get us ready every day! After recovering from the shock of seeing ourselves so glam, we went for a fashion shoot with photographer Su Barclay. Su is so lovely and really put us at ease with her directions and enthusiasm. We can be very awkward indeed when we aren’t in control of the camera so it was nice to have someone so supportive behind the lens! She took some fab shots too, so thank you Su!

All in all, it was a brilliant day and hopefully the first of many great events at Heartfelt. Thank you ever so much for inviting us over Kate and to everyone else there that day for making it such a success!

Christmas Jumper Day

Christmas Jumper Day | Bristol Christmas Market | She and Hem

We aren’t the types to shy away from novelty clothing, especially when weaved with a damn good deed. So today, on the third annual Christmas Jumper Day, we have donned our most festive sweaters to make the world better and are donating to the Save The Children #xmasjumperday cause.

Christmas time, sausages and wine! What better place to wear our joyous jumpers than the very merry Bristol Christmas Market. Our knitwear of choice, is Ski* and Snowflake*, both are from Matalan and they did a fine job of keeping us toasty whilst enjoying a Bratwurst or two. And, as if that wasn’t Christmassy enough, whlist catching up over a mulled wine, the real life Father Christmas appeared. Unfortunately for us, there was no sleigh in sight and he was merely sheltering from the rain, not handing out presents. He gave us a hug, but it was a little frosty…

Bangers and Fash

She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi

December has finally arrived and with it the perfect excuse to dress up all fancy every day of the week! Christmas time is party time afterall! Pass us a mince pie and some mulled wine, will you?

She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | YumiShe and Hem | Bangers and Fash | YumiShe and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi

We do love a reason to glam up and decided to break out our new festive dresses from the Yumi partywear collection* yesterday for a vintage filled day of fun at the Heartfelt Vintage shop in Bristol. After being completely transformed by Able Mabel who did an incredible job on our hair and Evie Smith who truly made us look the part, we felt ready to hit the dance floor!

She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi

Jo: I layered my beautiful silver Floral Prom Dress* over a super sparkly sequin top from New Look. I thought it added some extra pizzazz (you can never have too much pizzazz) and as I don’t like things to be too low cut, it protected my modesty. I added a black belt from ASOS, white tights from Topshop and some super sparkly high heels from Primark.

She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | YumiShe and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi

Victoria: My sleeveless Wallpaper Print Dress* is party perfect! I’m not usually a big fan of red dresses, but I was drawn to the shirt collar and easy to wear shape. I teamed it with black striped tights from Marks and Spencer, silver brogues from Next and a gorgeous black vintage bag from Heartfelt Vintage in Bristol.

She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | YumiShe and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi

In the evening we went to the fireworks which were put on to celebrate 150 years of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Don’t they look incredible?! I know we’ve said it before but we sure do love Bristol.

We’ll be posting more about our day at Heartfelt later in the week!

Down tools, it’s Poppy time!

She and Hem | Poppy

A couple of months ago we received a very exciting invitation from one of our favourite brands, Poppy, inviting us to London for a day of frolicking about in front of the camera whilst wearing a selection of their frocks! Errr, who could refuse that? We are both longtime Poppy fans thanks to their winning combination of adorable storybook inspired prints on big swooshy dresses so this was a bit of a dream come true for us! The only snag was, and this may come as a massive shock, but the two of us aren’t models (shut the front door) but we decided to throw our inhibitions out of the window, channeled our inner Cara and Karlie and set to work.

She and Hem | Poppy She and Hem | PoppyShe and Hem | PoppyShe and Hem | PoppyShe and Hem | PoppyShe and Hem | Poppy

And, as you can see, setting to work was exactly what was required as we successfully (we hope) negotiated all manner of props, real or otherwise, whilst wearing the glorious Hardware Store dress! It was so much fun and we loved being able to embrace the playfulness of the print, which is covered in wonderful illustrations including saws, brushes, pans and screwdrivers! It sure wasn’t hardware-ing these!

She and Hem | PoppyShe and Hem | Poppy

Aside from helping us to quite literally brush up on our modelling skills, we both had such a surreal and fantastic time with the whole Poppy team! They were beyond lovely and made us both feel so at ease during what could have been quite an awkward experience. They were so encouraging and supportive as we faffed about in front of the camera and we are so thrilled with the results! It was also fantastic to meet the super talented Bryony who is the lady behind all of the Poppy adventures! She has even added some incredible illustrations to our photos which we love so much! We think she’s totally hit the nail on the head.

She and Hem | PoppyShe and Hem | Poppy

How amazing is that tree?! Incredible.

The good news is that if you love the Hardware print as much as we do, Poppy are currently having a sale! The Hardware Store dress is going to be reduced for three whole days so screw whatever else it is you have to do and get wrenching that cash from your purse!

Look out for a special snowy Poppy post coming soon……

Swindon Designer Outlet Part 2

Swindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas Shopping

If you have read Swindon Designer Outlet Part 1, you will know that a couple of Saturday’s ago, myself and Jo went wild in the aisles and shopped until we dropped at McArthurGlen Swindon. And by dropped I mean, we both spent far too much money and promptly fell asleep on the train home. Our mission as part of The Gift Hunter Challenge was to find Christmas presents for three of our nearest and dearest. With the promise of The Cadbury Store, blogger (and personal!) favourite Yankee Candle and Ed’s Diner, and an eggnog latte or two, it sounded less like a challenge, and more like the perfectly indulgent girly afternoon out!

To fully embrace the Christmas spirit, I wore my snowflake jumper from Matalan* and subtly festive beret from Gallic Rooster*.

Swindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas ShoppingSwindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas ShoppingSwindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas Shopping

After a few hours browsing and admiring all of the lovely things, we made the difficult executive decision to head to Wagamama to have an in-depth discussion about Strictly Come Dancing what we wanted to purchase. Here are the items that are now patiently waiting under the tree.

Swindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas Shopping

The store I spent the most time and money in, and I’m not ashamed to say this, was Hornby. I am so ridiculously pleased with what I bought from the store and also, with the incredible customer service I received whilst there. Following advice from the very knowledgeable manager, James, I decided on what I wanted to buy for my dad, a life long model train fan. He often gets somewhat forgotten about at Christmas, his annual gift of a box of Liquorice Allsorts from every member of the family being hilarious to everyone but him, so I wanted to give the old boy something special this year. As soppy as it sounds, being able to give my dad the above gifts will be the highlight of my Christmas Day, especially as I am back to work on Boxing Day! I did blow over half of my budget in Hornby, but I don’t think any of the other recipients will mind.

Swindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas ShoppingSwindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas Shopping

My favourite auntie really loves Christmas and makes the whole family a small stocking every year full to the brim with small but uniquely personal gifts, which we open just before our Christmas dinner. It’s probably my favourite of our family traditions. To say thank you, I decided to put together a rather special stocking of treats just for her, including a gorgeous Bobbi Brown set from Cosmetic Company Store.

Swindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas Shopping Swindon Designer Outlet | McArthurGlen | Christmas Shopping

These two gifts are for one of my BFF’s. Although there are several specialist bag shops at the outlet, including Osprey London, Antler, Radley and Fiorelli, it was this gorgeous blue French Connection bag that caught my eye. I think it will make a perfectly casual but fun day bag. My friend has been super supportive this year, and as she is a fellow Yankee Candle obsessive, I couldn’t leave without popping in to purchase my last perfect present! I spent far too long choosing the most festive Yankee Candle from their vast selection, and I really hope I made the right choice. Just another 23 days to find out!
