Don’t drop your phone in the Bath….

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

What happens when you challenge two bloggers to have a swell day out on a £100 budget? They have a day full of macaroons, mulled wine and markets of course!

We recently accepted a challenge set by Huawei, who are celebrating the launch of the Ascend Y550 smartphone, to show what we consider to be an excellent day out in the UK. We both quickly agreed that a day trip to Bath would be just the ticket! Bath is one of our favourite places in the South West, especially at Christmas time when the city comes alive thanks to the sights and smells of the Bath Christmas Markets. Bath is truly buzzing, but this isn’t just due to the markets, oh no, there is so much more to see…

We started the day the only way we know how, coffee and cake (and smashed avocado on toast, obvs). Having only previously been to the recently opened Colonna and Hunter for a cheeky 1/3, we decided to pay them an early morning visit as we had heard wonderful things about their food. We planned our day over a couple of flat whites and, as you can see, with all that caffeine our ‘To Do’ list got a little bit ambitious! Although, apart from the cat cuddling, I think we managed to tick everything off! We apologise to all of the cats of Bath that didn’t get cuddles that day…our bad. We then went for a little stroll around the Royal Crescent to pick out our future estates and then, after at least 12 minutes of exercise, we were swiftly back into the other Colonna, Colonna and Small’s, for more caffeine. It’s a hard life.

One of the highlights of our bonza Bath day was the wonderful Bath Artisan Market, where we finally had chance to meet Amy Laws (there’s only one, after all), a lovely and super talented lady whose dresses we often feature on She and Hem! They are so blooming good! Unfortunately it was the last market of the year but, never fear, they start again in February and we would totally recommend that you pop along if you are ever browsing in Bath. We’ll be dreaming of those mincepie macaroons from Marilyn’s for a very long time to come (thankfully we bought quite a few to keep us going!) and Oscar the cat by Ben Rothery is now at the very top of our Christmas lists (see, we did cuddle a cat after all!). It was then time for a delicious roast and a mulled cider at the Bath Brew House before heading off in search of more festive frivolity!

We rounded off our day with a look around the lovely Bath Christmas Market, which had quietened down after a busy day of trading. Bath is such a picturesque city anyway but exploring the 170(ish, apparently) wooden chalets selling everything from local cheeses to wooden ties is a charming experience and, with a mulled wine in hand, a lovely way to spend a crisp December evening. We left laiden with goodies from Speckled Wood, My Bear Hands and some yummy blackcurrant rum liqueur from Friary Liqueurs. A merry Christmas indeed!

Do you think you could have a better time than we did for £100? I know it’s QUITE the ask but the very kind people at Huawei are feeling the Christmas spirit (or perhaps have just been drinking them) as they would like to offer one of you the chance to win your own super stylish Ascend Y550 4G smartphone and £100 if you share your itinerary in the comments below! Good luck everyone!

  1. I would totally go to Edinburgh for a day out to see the sights, followed by all the Edinburgh Gin and some more sights, like the castle and then finish off at the Innis and Gunn brewery before attempting to scale a hill or two before getting the train home.

  2. I love Bath and that would have been my choice – the Christmas market is lovely and I really want to try the Thermal Spa!

However my £100 day trip would be to York. I’d start with a breakfast at Mannions and Co, a gorgeous deli, then explore The Shambles and the independent shops. I would definitely go to the York Dungeons and the Jorvik Viking Museum too – I can’t resist being a stereotypical tourist! After all that, I would make sure to head to the famous Bettys tearoom for afternoon tea, then finally a drink in one of the hundreds of pubs around the city.

  3. I would go to London on a cheap coach, and meet up with friends and have fun like the good old days when I used to live there! Love the vintage shopping on brick lace, would go in cafe 1001 for lunch, then go on Central line to my home town for a reminisce!

  4. Just enough money for a cheap flight back home to Belfast, where I’d fill the camera with photos of friends and family as well as the quirkier side of Belfast city – the giant fish, the telegraph clock, the sign outside the public loo that reads ‘No Dumping’!

  5. If I was to win the Phone & Lolly… It would help me to make my Daughters birthday on the 15th January extra Special…. One of the UK Capital Cites will be our Destination, but Undecided as yet…. All the best Laid Plans Generally get changed.. So will decide the night before, and venture off with Phone & Cash… into the unknown.. 🙂 Birthday fun & Frolic will be captured, on what looks like a pretty Decent Camera phone.. Thanks for the chance guys xxx

  6. If I was to win the phone & Cash. It would certainly help to make my Daughters birthday weekend away even more Special… We are off to one of the UKs Capital Cities, for a meal show & sightseeing, but undecided as yet to where, as all the best laid plans are often changed at the last minute. Captured on the phone, which looks to have very good picture Quality, will be birthday fun & Frolics, as well as some of the sites in our chosen City 🙂 Thanks For the opportunity. Good Luck Everyone 🙂

  7. Given the opportunity as the name Huawei implies ‘splendid achievement’
that’s what winning the phone and money would do, It would help me to achieve a great day out for my most perfect partner, Wishing that the phone and I would meet the same perfection, I would find a local retreat and take in a light lunch and then take a walk through some of the most beautiful countryside that the south west has to offer “weather permitting” after building up a appetite I would go to a restaurant that can offer a quite romantic meal for two. the phone would help me have a quality reflection that I could treasure forever…
Wishing all the best of luck, “fingers crossed”
I would also like to say that I love the website keep it up for all to learn and appreciate

  8. It looks like you had an awesome time in Bath! Unfortunately last time I visited the Christmas Market it was too busy to get near any of the stores. I did enjoy lots of hot chocolate and cake though.

If I was lucky enough to win I would have to treat myself for my birthday which is a week today! I wouldn’t venture too far from home as we are due snow so I would take a trip to Leamington Spa, go for brunch at Bills after a nice lie in. Have a wander round Jephson Gardens looking out for the flowers that are starting to bloom – lots of lovely snowdrops. I would then treat myself to something pretty from Berylune, the pint sized department store, before having afternoon tea at Vinteas Tea Room and ending up at the Clarendon for one of their seven deadly gins – gin so awesomely mixed you can’t just have one. I would obviously have to use the phone and camera to keep you updated on instagram!

  9. With £100 I would make a break for it out of the city! Bundle into a car with a few pals over to the beautiful South Wales coast, in particular The Gower. The morning would be spent (attempting) learning to surf, which is one of my goals for 2015. This would also the perfect opportunity to capture some Instagram worthy pics! An afternoon pottering around the local tea rooms & shops & eating cake to replenish the energy levels would be perfect. Topped off with a trip to a pub with a roaring fire to warm the cockles before the trip home x

  10. I’d call my best friend (like me, she loves to be beside the sea) and we’d head for Brighton. We’d eat fish & chips on a windy pier, then warm up again by wandering through the arcades. Then, we’d make our way to Brighton’s famous Lanes to see the Street Art and have a browse in the many quirky shops. No day out in Brighton would be complete without a visit to Choccywoccydoodah – we would HAVE to treat ourselves to some yummy chocolate to take home! And after a fun-filled day, we’d pause just long enough to watch the sun set over the sea before we catch our train home!
