Make like a blogger and Split

I recently escaped the rain of Blighty when James and I jumped on a plane to sunny Split in Croatia for a week of ridiculous relaxation! And ice cream. So much ice cream.

Split became our destination of choice after some unsophisticated research which saw us work out that it was the cheapest, hottest place one can fly to from Bristol in August. I think our return flight was £30! DEAL. Thank you for existing, EasyJet. Anyway, it turned out to be a top decision as it’s an absolutely beautiful part of the world and has left me desperate to go back and explore more of Croatia. Or CroYAYtia as they clearly should call it.

It was around 40 degrees the entire time we were there which blissfully meant it was a real struggle to do anything that didn’t involve lying by the sea. As a couple who usually have itchy feet to explore everything and anything whilst on holiday (we once went on a six hour round trip to see a giant fork whilst holidaying in Switzerland, I kid you not) it was rather nice to be forced to relax! It also proved the perfect opportunity to road test my new Karl Lagerfeld prescription sunglasses from Specsavers*. Although I’ve been wearing them at home, it was only when I was sunbathing and reading at the same time that I truly realised what an idiot I am for not having had prescription sunglasses before! Plus they look pretty chic too, right?

Isn’t it beautiful? I’m really keen to go back so if anyone has any top Croatia tips or places to visit I would love to hear from you! Just leave a comment below.

Painted City Circus

We’ve already blogged (and vlogged!) about our time at the beautiful Bristol Balloon Fiesta but with a back drop like that it would have been unacceptable blogger behavior not to have taken some outfit photos whilst we were there! As luck would have it, the lovely Emily and Fin kindly sent us a few pieces from their stunning new Autumn Winter collection to style and we couldn’t resist taking them for a spin.

The new collection features so many beautiful new prints and shapes but we were both equally blown away by the vibrant colours of the Painted City Circus print. It’s so much fun with skyscrapers, bridges, Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty all jostling for position! I (Jo) went for the print in the Ruby dress* which is a longer style and features a scooped neckline, fitted waist and a super flattering box pleated full skirt. I accessorised with a simple yellow belt, yellow Orla Kiely for Clarks shoes (have you seen the new collection? our bank balances are already terrified) and my go-to red heart sunglasses.

Victoria opted for the Florence skirt* which has an incredibly lovely curved waistband which really makes it sit nicely. As a couple of dress fans, it has totally converted us! She teamed it with the yellow polka-dot Edna top*, which is the perfect match for this print, nude sandals from New Look and round ASOS sunglasses. One of our favourite things about Emily and Fin is that they always do a good pocket and the new collection is no exception! We can also confirm that both styles are perfect for twirling in.

A big thank you to Emily and Fin for sending us these stunning outfits. We really can’t decide if we prefer the dress or the skirt! What do you think?

Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2015

She and Hem | Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2015

Ah, hot air balloons! How we love you. We never take this unique part of our city for granted but it was a special reminder recently when we went to meet with the fabulous Charlotte from Betty magazine (OMG, we know) when, as we sat outside in the glorious sunshine on the top deck of a boat, cocktail in hand, three should suddenly float over our heads – much to Charlotte’s surprise and delight! “This is Bristol” we said, “isn’t it the best?”

The Bristol Balloon Fiesta, then, is the highlight of any local balloon enthusiasts diary and we always try and go to, or at least sit and watch from a distance, as many mass ascents as possible over the four days the Fiesta runs for. This year was no different and between us we watched them all! GO TEAM. It’s fair to say that whether you are down at the Fiesta itself, or perched up on a hill, or even just sitting looking out of your window with a cup of tea, there’s no better sight!

On Thursday evening we ventured down to the Fiesta site at Ashton Court for the first balloon launch and the night glow. We always like to dress for the occasion and this year was no different as once again we broke out the balloon print dresses. Victoria wore a handmade dress (Mumma V is a talented lady!) which was made using a Christine Haynes pattern and yellow heart sunglasses from Primark (fancier but similar version here). I (Jo) wore a Rosalita McGee balloon print dress and a hot air balloon bag which are both from Modcloth and teamed them with brown heart sunglasses from Topshop. Will we ever get bored of heart sunglasses? Probably not!

As much fun as it is to visit the Fiesta for the night glow, we particularly love going down to Ashton Court for the morning ascents (even if it does mean getting up at silly-AM) as there really is something truly magical about watching so many balloons go up when the rest of the city is still sleeping. We’ll be blogging about our time at the Saturday morning ascent later in the week (as well as some very special outfits from Emily and Fin) but if you can’t wait until then (or you just love balloons as much as we do) then have a watch of our Bristol Balloon Fiesta vlog to get a sneaky look at what we got up to as well as the rest of our time at the Fiesta.

At long last, the people of Bristol can enjoy the delicious taste of Mexico in style at the brand new Wahaca restaurant in Clifton. Located on Queens Road, Wahaca has won numerous awards for it’s flavoursome street food, so we popped along to try it for ourselves. As luck would have it, super glam former Masterchef winner and Wahaca co-founder Thomasina “Tommi” Miers was in town to see how the things were going, so we took full advantage of her insider knowledge and asked for her top picks. What a lovely lady. She really is juan in a million…

But enough waffle, let’s taco ’bout how awesome the food was. I (Victoria) am always annoyingly indecisive when it comes to ordering, because I genuinely love most food. So somewhere like Wahaca is perfect for dawdlers like me as it has a bountiful Street Food section from which you are encouraged (although no encouragement is really needed for me!) to order 2-3 dishes per person. On Tommi’s recommendation I chose the salmon sashimi tostada, sweet potato and feta taquito, and the scrummy spicy crab special, whilst Jo opted for the grilled British steak taco, the chilli quesadillas, and another salmon sashimi tostada (great minds etc.). It would have been guac-ward (ha!) to leave without trying the desserts, and as they all sounded so appetising, we decided to share the churros y chocolate and the salted caramel ice-cream! I’ve already booked to go back, as I’m desperate to try the buñuelo with Tommi’s tomatillo jam. I’ll be in sweet fried pastry heaven!

Greetings dear reader, and ho, ho, how are you doing? Me? Well I’m fine thank you, as I’ve just spent a sunny Thursday morning in July drinking champagne and eating mince pies underneath quite possibly the biggest Christmas tree I’ve ever seen! As much as I (Victoria) wish it was, this wasn’t an average She and Hem day. We had made a trip to London for a full on day of meetingsvlogging and most importantly (you know we blooming love these guys!), the Boden Christmas Press Day.

Just you Santa pause there for a minute…look at that coat! It’s very much the outer wear of our dreams, and we both fell completely head over heels for it. I’ve been a particularly good girl this year (so far), so I’m hoping to find it underneath my Christmas tree! In addition to the incredible coats, the shoe selection was particularly enticing. In fact, one pair would make the most perfect accessory to ‘the most important dress I’ll ever wear’ on a very special day next month. I can’t tell you which design, as I like to think the OH will read this, but when I saw them, it was like all my Christmases had come at once! Jo had to bribe me with another glass of fizz just to let go of them

We are still very much getting to grips with vlogging so please do let us know what you think!

Double Thumbs Dresses #60

Welcome back to another dress roundup courtesy of Double Thumbs Dresses #60! SIXTY! How did that happen, eh? But let’s not dwell on all the pounds we’ve (I’ve) no doubt collectively spent on frocks over the past couple of years and let’s crack on with the dresses we’ve deemed worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval.

Linea Lace Shift Dress £150 from French Connection
Linea Lace Shift Dress £150 from French Connection

We start the week with this yellow and pink scalloped-lace wonderfrock from French Connection. I really think this dress is just perfection and will no doubt be furious when I wait for it to go in the sale and then it sells out immediately in my size. First World Problems indeed. That aside, how adorable is that little bow? SWOON.

Floral Print Ruffle Dress £48 from Topshop
Floral Print Ruffle Dress £48 from Topshop

I get to write about this pink Topshop beauty from the smug position of someone who already owns it. Hooray for me. It really is a little gem of a dress with a super lovely 70s floral print and beautiful ruffle details. I also enjoy that it’s chiffon so never needs an iron! I’m so rock and roll.

Floral Lace Shirt Dress £49.50 from Marks and Spencer
Floral Lace Shirt Dress £49.50 from Marks and Spencer

My never ending love affair with M&S continues with this white lace shirt dress. It’s basically a net curtain in dress form and I love it. Look at those little cuffs! Look at those sleeves! Look at those pockets! It also looks so gorgeous to wear. Go on, treat yourself to the little video of it on the website and tell me I’m wrong.

Ineesha Dress £55 by Louche at Joy
Ineesha Dress £55 by Louche at Joy

If your wardrobe is currently missing a cockatiel print dress then you’ll no doubt be relieved to discover that Joy have just the frock for you! I could parrot on all day about how lovely those cap sleeves are or how pretty the box pleat skirt is but I think I’ll just let the birds do the talking.

Building Block Print Day Dress £60 from Yumi
Building Block Print Day Dress £60 from Yumi

I think there’s something quite wonderful about this new apartment print from Yumi. There’s a lot going on behind those windows! This dress also comes in grey but I really like the slightly unusual combination of the blues and browns together. Perhaps this particular building block would look good paired with some skyscraper heels? (sorry).

'Marlene' Tropical Banana Leaf Day Dress £27.99 (sale price) from Lindy Bop
‘Marlene’ Tropical Banana Leaf Day Dress £27.99 (sale price) from Lindy Bop

I’m a big fan of this tropical print from Lindy Bop. I really like the simple style of the day dress but those big beautiful leaves are surely the star of the show. Who doesn’t love a discreet banana?

Lace Insert Swing Dress in Print £30 from ASOS
Lace Insert Swing Dress in Print £30 from ASOS

My lace love is back again with this floral print swing dress from ASOS. I already really love the style and shape of this frock but the embroidered lace inserts really make it something quite special. I really want to waft around with those flared sleeves!

Eliza Dress £95 from Deadly is the Female
Eliza Dress £95 from Deadly is the Female

Last but not least is this playful dress from Frome based Deadly is the Female. How charming is the flower cart print? So cute! I’m also a massive fan of the red straps, the green trim, and the yellow belt! There’s just so much to love.

On a sunny evening last week I caught up with a few local bloggers to eat and drink our merry way around the centre of Bristol to celebrate the launch of SummerDine at Cabot Circus. We made a rendezvous at Coal for a catch up over cocktails. Unfortunately, I needed to drive to the event, so I wasn’t able to indulge quite as much as I would have liked, but I took contentment in giving my cocktails to a very loved up couple in the corner of the restaurant. Bless ’em. I’m almost Valentine by name (7 weeks to go!) , but certainly Valentine by nature!

For our mains, we popped down a level in Cabot to TGI Friday’s, where I found myself quickly distracted by the mountains of meat on offer. It must be my short attention spam…

As well as tasting the new menu, I volunteered to try my hand as a mixologist, as I do love to lift people’s spirits! As you can see by the picture below, the guys at TGI’s were astounded by the amount of maple syrup I decided to put into my concoction. Next time I’ll have to use it a little more syrup-titiously…Kudos to Lily for tasting the scotch bonnet and posing with the biggest piece of steak I’ve ever seen. Bristol bloggers got beef, but only the good kind!

The last stop on our foodie tour was dessert at Brasserie Blanc in Quakers Friars. Ooh La La! Emily and I chose the chocolate souffle with pistachio ice cream. Merci beaucoup and bien joué to Raymond Blanc for creating that little piece of chocolate heaven. Now I know why you are (probably) the nations favourite Frenchman! Désolé, Monsieur Ginola.

Our First Vlog | Boden #NewBritishChristmas Press Day

It finally happened! We’ve always chickened out of filming vlogs due to the fact that a) it’s scary and b) it’s hard!  But after getting our hands on a new camera (an Olympus Pen E-PL7 for any camera buffs out there) a couple of weeks ago we decided that it was now or never and thought we’d take our first tentative steps into the world of vlogging by filming our day out in London.

Please do like, comment, and subscribe to our channel if you enjoy what you see! We would really love to make this a regular thing so please do let us know what you think of our first attempt. What should we film next?

Whilst you’re mulling that over, do keep your eyes peeled for a good old fashioned blog post about Boden‘s #NewBritishChristmas press day over the coming week.
