Every September, The Mall in Bristol is the place to head to if you are looking to gaze upon a catwalk of high street trends to suit every age, style and budget. TV stylist Mark Heyes is joined by a different celebrity co-host every season, and this year we were both particularly excited to hear that it was going to be Henry Holland. We are big fans of Henry’s hip label House of Holland, and are always terribly sad not to be invited to his London Fashion Week shows (hint hint Henry), as they are consistently colourful, expressive and fun, which is what fashion is all about to us. Because of our passion for the (ever so) slightly flamboyant, some of the trends seen at Bristol Fashion Week, such as Military and Gothic, are a tad chic and sophisticated for us colour lovers.
Nevertheless, we were really pleased to see She and Hem favourites Cath Kidston feature for the first time in the Mismatch trend, starring many items we already own. Lovely stuff! Also, the pink and yellow combo, seen above, as part of the Animal trend from John Lewis really floats our boat. Although Bristol Fashion Week is now finished for this season, we picked up a few tips from Mark and Henry that will hopefully see us all through until next September. For instance, if you can’t wait to try out the military trend, be subtle, as you don’t want to look like you’re actually marching into battle. You could also soften the trend with romantic frilled blouses, which we spotted in the Opulence section of the show from Marks and Spencer. Thanks for having us BFW. See you next year!
Did you attend a BFW show? If so, what was your favourite trend?
On Thursday I popped down to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway with my friend, fashion icon and fellow M&S appreciator Kelly to catch one of the runway shows of Bristol Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 15. This was my third BFW and it was definitely the best so far thanks to the brilliant movie theme that was embraced from start to finish! It was such a nice touch to be welcomed with popcorn and Kelly and I had a great time admiring the movie posters as we drank our delicious fruity drinks.
The first thing to catch our eye on the catwalk was the ‘High Shine’ collection from John Lewis! You can’t beat a bit of glitz and glamour and I suddenly became all about sparkles, faux fur and sunglasses! What a combination! Plus, how much do I want to be the sort of girl to rock up at the work Christmas party wearing an actual crown?? I also loved the 70s injection courtesy of M&S during the ‘Nomadic’ segment. I can totally see myself trying this look out come the colder weather and couldn’t help but notice the similarities between that pink hat and the one from Accessorize I fell in love with in our last post! I may have made a sneaky purchase after the show!
As someone who likes to dress in as many bright colours as possible, the large amount of grey and black on the catwalk (the grey coat appears to be this seasons staple) didn’t really do it for me although, once again, I was really feeling the faux fur accessories! I’m going to be a big fan of this trend I can see! Both Kelly and I also enjoyed the liberal use of colourful tights which gave everything a bit of a Gossip Girl vibe and is certainly something I will be happy to embrace!
The two stand out pieces for us were the black sequin jacket (which was spectacularly hard to photograph) from M&S, naturally. It’s absolutely stunning and a brilliant take on the biker jacket. Imagine throwing that on top of your dresses come party season! We did several laps of the store after the show but sadly couldn’t find it (probably just as well as it’s £89) but it is available online should you be feeling flush. The other was the gold and purple fringe dress of dreams from Phase Eight at John Lewis which had Kelly shouting “MAKE SURE YOU TAKE PHOTOS OF THAT!” at me as it came sashaying down the catwalk, fringe all over the shop. What a stunner.
Did you go to Bristol Fashion Week? What was your favourite piece? And how are we all feeling about crimped hair??

With Bristol Fashion Week AW15 kicking off in traditional style here in Brizzle, we headed to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway last week for a little flavour of what’s in store! We spent a jolly ol’ evening with our fellow local bloggers in Accessorize who kindly let us indulge in a lot of of fashion/wedding chat whilst drinking all their wine, eating all their cake and fawning over their novelty bags. Seriously, so many novelty bags.
When they managed to drag us away from the cake, the lovely manager talked us through the new collections as well as giving us an insight into what is going to be big over the next season. One thing is for sure, Accessorize have embraced a rather luxurious vibe, with an opulent colour pallet of gold and berry tones creating a bit of glamour in everything from ponchos to pom poms! We are seriously all about a pom pom! The festive season is also sneaking in with lots of sparkly accessories appearing on the shelves! We love all that glitters so some real restraint had to be used but we will no doubt be back for a cheeky Christmas clutch come December! It was also no surprise to learn that the 70s are still big news this Autumn and tassel lovers will be pleased to know that they are well catered for with lots of Moroccan influences appearing too!
But of course for us it was alllll about the novelty bags! Ever since that camera bag Accessorize have just been nailing the novelty! How adorable is that robot bag? NEED. Perhaps more sensibly, we also became rather smitten with a rather smashing boxy red satchel and a pink fedora which we are expertly (stop laughing) modelling for you below.
Bristol Fashion Week runs from Wednesday 30th – Sunday 4th of October with tickets starting at £8.95. With 17 catwalks to choose from, it’s always an excellent time with plenty of energy on the catwalk (no poker faces here!).
The red carpet has been rolled out in Bristol this week for the return of the South West’s largest fashion event, Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall. Thousands of stylish Bristolians will be strutting over to The Mall to catch one of the 17 catwalk shows, hosted by Lucy Watson from Made in Chelsea and Lorraine Kelly’s BFF/TV stylist Mark Heyes. This year the show has a travel theme, with the entrance of the purpose built pavilion styled as an airport departure lounge and each store has put together a cool collection of on-trend looks, based on gap years, summer holidays and safari chic.
We flew in on Wednesday night and, in true She and Hem style, were the last to board flight S/S15, with a one way ticket to the land of denim, swish 70’s and our personal favourite, brights. We saw so many outfits, the Bristol Fashion Week tailor must be swift. His career will certainly take off!
After the show, we had a stop over at M&S in The Mall to check out the new Limited Edition collection, hang out with lovely local bloggers and eat ALL of the cheese. I (Victoria) fell in love with the Paisley Print Dress that Lily is beautifully modelling below and Jo’s yellow M&S Limited Edition No Peep Dress was certainly first class! In addition to her gorgeous M&S dress, Jo wore brown beads (old) also from M&S, spotty tights from UK Tights, Urban Outfitters boots and her Kate Spade bag. I wore a vintage 1970’s dress from Portobello Road with my brown Orla Kiely for Clarks heels and black tights from UK Tights. My belt is from New Look and black floppy hat from ASOS. We both accessoried with M&S flowers!
Will we be seeing you at Bristol Fashion Week 2016?
Hold on to your fedoras folks as Bristol Fashion Week kicks off next week at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway! BFW is always jam packed with fabulous high-street fashion and is a great opportunity to pick up on some top styling tips, as well as potentially spotting the odd celeb! It’s going to be a treat! We were therefore mega-excited when The Mall and Oasis invited us to come into their store and style an outfit based on the trends we will be seeing on one of the 17 catwalk shows that will be happening over five fashion-fueled days! A sneak peak at Fashion Week, as it were.
Along with fellow lovely bloggers Megan from Briar Rose and Tara from The Style Rawr, we were let loose amongst the rails of Oasis at The Mall to put together our on-trend attire. Megan, Tara, and I (Jo) all flocked to the stunning monochrome pieces from the new Shadow Floral collection and raced back to the changing rooms. There was a rather bloggerific moment where we all pulled back the curtains to find ourselves in matching outfits! Can you blame us though? That monochrome duster is dreamy. Meanwhile, marching to the beat of her own fashionable drum, Victoria had bee-lined straight to her own monochrome ensemble choosing the fab Retro Flower Geo Print trousers and teaming them with the Libby Trimmed Crepe Tee. She added a pop of colour with a sunshine yellow Ponte Jacket and Cassie Courts and in doing so managed to nail two trends in one! What a pro.
I decided on a quick change of style in order to mix things up and thought, as we have dabbled in pastels, florals, and seventies trends quite a lot recently, I would try my hand at embracing denim! I quickly nabbed the pretty Dita dress and proceeded to walk around the store like a lost lamb not knowing what on earth to team with it. Thankfully the lovely personal stylist at the store, Charlotte, recognised the fear in my eyes and within minutes had me wearing the most beautiful Suki Embroidered Fringe kimono and black ankle boots. She was like some sort of clothes wizard. I would never have chosen a kimono if left to my own devices but I loved it the moment I put it on!
Thanks for looking after us, Oasis! We are now suitably stylish and totally trendy enough to attend Bristol Fashion Week. Which is just as well really as Lucy Watson from Made in Chelsea is going to be hosting this year, along with regular host TV Stylist Mark Heyes, and she is not a lady we wish to disappoint! Big thanks also to Cafe Rouge for the yummy food and bubbly beforehand!
Bristol Fashion Week runs from 25th-29th March and you can find out more information and book your tickets here.
