I’m obviously in a floral mood as I am also really diggin’ this Oasis number, who are really impressing me with their SS16 offerings. Those sleeves are a total triumph.

Double Thumbs Dresses #75

Hello hello! Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses, our roundup of the frocks we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted double thumbs seal of approval! Before we crack on, just a heads up, this particular Double Thumbs Dresses contains a sponsored link but please be assured we only feature the frocks we consider tip top!  As you were…

Stretch Dress in a Vintage Look £39.00 from ESpirit
Stretch Dress in a Vintage Look £39.00 from Esprit
Spotty Jacquard Dress £75.00 from ESpirit
Spotty Jacquard Dress £75.00 from Esprit

We begin with these two fab frocks from Esprit! How gorgeous is that sixties style vintage number? I love the high neck and flared silhouette combo and a jacquard fabric is always a favourite of mine. I’ve also gone dotty for their spotty number thanks to my ongoing quest to find a new monochrome dress. I love the two different sizes of spot and the inverted a-line is such a nice shape.

Costa Rica Hat Print Dress £34.50 by Compañia Fantastica from ThunderEgg
Costa Rica Hat Print Dress £34.50 by Compañia Fantastica from ThunderEgg

Hats off to this great print from fab Spanish brand Compañia Fantastica! They’ve got some excellent prints for Spring with this boater number already finding its way into my wardrobe. I picked mine up from Thunderegg who always have so many tempting treats! I do find this dress to be a little on the short side but my groundbreaking plan is to wear a denim skirt over the top until Summer!

Abito Trapezio Con Stampa Banane €125 (£100ish) from Lazzari
Abito Trapezio Con Stampa Banane €125 (£100ish) from Lazzari

We’ve ditched Spain for Italy with this DANCING BANANA PRINT (this is not a drill) from Lazzari who Victoria linked me up with during the week. I’d love to know what her Google search was to find this particular frock! My Italian isn’t great (non existent you might say) but I do know that this website has a lot of beautiful pieces. Anyone know of any UK stockists?

It’s an Inspired Taste Dress $119.99 (£85ish) from Modcloth
It’s an Inspired Taste Dress $119.99 (£85ish) from Modcloth

Modcloth really know how to do a novelty print don’t they? I am forever infuriated and relieved in equal measure that they aren’t based in the UK. I would have no money AT ALL. It might be time to embrace the shipping charge though as this tasty dress has both avocados AND aubergines on it. NEED.

Navy Nautical Sundress £20 from Tu at Sainsburys
Navy Nautical Sundress £20 from Tu at Sainsburys

I always love a good stroll around Tu at Sainsburys as I find they are usually good for a fun print or two! We have been wearing a lot of umm ‘swimmer prints’ (exhibit A exhibit B) recently (not something I thought I’d ever say) so this little number is right up my street! It’s lovely and also a total bargain!

Flamingo Fun Flare Print Dress $59.42 (£42ish) from Chicwish
Flamingo Fun Flare Print Dress $59.42 (£42ish) from Chicwish

Last but not least we have this gloriously pink affair from Chicwish. That flamingo print is quite frankly awesome and those shades of pink look so lovely together.  The 50s style of the dress is always going to be a winner for me and there’s a big bow round the back just to finish things off in style.

A-Line Striped Dress £29.99 from Zara
A-Line Striped Dress £29.99 from Zara

Time to stripe a pose in this affordable frock from Zara, which I believe is ticking off at least three SS16 trends. I am loving the cheeky chevron action up top and hidden round the back there are some delightful little buttons for you to faff around with every time you put it on/take it off.

Cherry Blossom Dress £45 from Miss Selfridge
Cherry Blossom Dress £45 from Miss Selfridge

It’s never too early to get excited about cherry blossom season (Instagram is no doubt rubbing its collective knees with anticipation) and, come the time, what better dress to waft around in than this stunning Miss Selfridge affair? Look at those sleeves! *faints*

Cupid's Heart Printed Dress £42.41 from Chicwish
Cupid’s Heart Printed Dress £42.41 from Chicwish

Heart prints are inevitably cropping up all over the shop at the moment but this Chicwish number has really caught my eye. The colours are just great and, to me at least, it has a slight Kate Spade feel to it without the Kate Spade price-tag. Winner!

Rajaa Whale Print Dress £49 from Louche
Rajaa Whale Print Dress £49 from Louche

You’ll have a whale of a time in this Louche dress which whaley does has a totally excellent print that channels the deep blue sea in colour and theme!

Heart Print Shirtdress £48 from Topshop
Heart Print Shirtdress £48 from Topshop

How much do I love thee? Let me count the ways! This Topshop heart print shirtdress is simply vintage valentine perfection! It’s just SO cute which is probably why everyone has been snapping it up since it appeared online late last week. Curses! It’s worth checking though as they do keep adding more stock. The print is also available in a just-as-popular shirt.

Stripe Shirt Dress £55 from Topshop
Stripe Shirt Dress £55 from Topshop

But, hey, who needs hearts when you can stripe a pose in this little Topshop number instead? Apparently this print is ‘conversational’, a description that never fails to make me laugh, but I’ll gladly discuss those delectable stripes, the neatly cinched in waist and cute little button up detail with anyone who will listen.

Red Cross and Plaid Belted Flare Dress £42.14 (with discount) from Chicwish
Red Cross and Plaid Belted Flare Dress £42.14 (with discount) from Chicwish

There’s so much I love about this Chicwish dress that I’m not entirely sure where to start! The colour and cross/plaid combo print are pretty magnificent and that whopper of a belt is just everything to me right now. Also, sleeves. I’m all about those long sleeves. It’s really rather cold at the moment, if you hadn’t noticed.

Guards & Friends Sleeveless Slub Dress £65 from Cath Kidston
Guards & Friends Sleeveless Slub Dress £65 from Cath Kidston

Atteeeeentttttion! It’s time to quick march yourself to the Cath Kidston website to grab one of these incredible soldier print dresses! What a print and, not that I’m planning ahead or anything, but the potential perfect dress to wear to the Queen’s 90th birthday party. Assuming I get invited of course.

Retro Floral Print Bell Sleeve Dress £18 by F&F
Retro Floral Print Bell Sleeve Dress £18 by F&F

Yes Tesco! I am digging this retro floral frock. Who doesn’t love a good bell sleeve? and the shift shape with that dreamy print is ticking all the right boxes. Oh and did I mention it’s only eighteen pounds? BARGAIN.

Babydoll Dress in Grey Cat Print £165 by Paul & Joe Siser at ASOS
Babydoll Dress in Grey Cat Print £165 by Paul & Joe Siser at ASOS

So you might need some extra cash floating around for this Paul & Joe Sister affair (and if you’ve got extra cash at this stage in January then you are a better person that I) but, my goodness, it’s only flippin’ covered in cats. Meow! I adore the grey and the pink against the cream, you might even say I’m lapping it up.

Caroline Dress £59.99 from Chi Chi
Caroline Dress £59.99 from Chi Chi

Chi Chi really are the Queens of the occasion frock at the moment and this big ol’ floral number is just the latest in a long line of hits. I love the brown with the gorgeous red tones of the flowers, I think it’s just perfect for this time of year. You could dress this one up but it would look equally fab with thick white tights and brown boots.

Verna Skater Dress in Dutch Floral £40 by Motel
Verna Skater Dress in Dutch Floral £40 by Motel

Last but not least we have this Dutch delight from Motel. The button up high neck with alllll that detail down the front is just great. I’m also, as is no doubt totally predictable by now, wildly into those long cuffed sleeves! Do be prepared to get your pins out though, this one looks short!

That’s all folks,

Hem and Away: The Story Museum

Hem and Away: The Story Museum

Once upon a time we took a trip to the land of Oxford to visit the magical world of the Story Museum. We had so much fun exploring this delightfully quirky wonderland that we couldn’t help but dedicate a whole post to our adventures. Shall we continue?

Hem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story Museum

Since opening in 2009, the museum has been steadily working to create an international centre that’s dedicated to celebrating all forms of storytelling. Thanks to a willing army of volunteers (who are all very helpful and friendly), teachers, artists, and authors they have been transforming what they have called a ‘dilapidated building’ (but what is now more sort of charmingly ‘shabby chic’) into the most incredibly fun place to spend an afternoon. We honestly had so much fun there, it really does make you feel like a big kid!

Hem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story Museum

Just when you thought we couldn’t get any more ridiculous! You can imagine how happy we were when we stumbled across ‘The Changing Room’ where you are encouraged to throw on all sorts of ludicrous fancy dress and then sit on a giant talking throne! We spent a fairly unreasonable amount of time here.

Hem and Away: The Story Museumsm13

Much merriment was also had as we wandered around the ‘Draw me a story’ exhibition which features six fabulous illustrators. It was wonderful to see their original artwork, prints and sketchbooks as well as seeing so many children getting involved with the workshops and chatting to the the artist in residence!

Hem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story MuseumHem and Away: The Story Museum

On the top floor of the Story Museum you are treated to the extreme reading room in which you can sit and read (books are provided) in all manor of ridiculous spots including a garden shed, a cage or, if you’re like us, one or two boats! You are then invited to pop on a dressing gown and enter the ‘Time for bed’ room in which you will find a 15ft bed, complete with patchwork quilt. This quite magical space is all lit up with fairy-lights and is, quite possibly, the comfiest room in the land!

The End

Have you read our guide to Oxford

Hem and Away: Oxford

Hem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesterner

We were recently invited by First Great Western to take part in their #BeAGreatWesterner campaign which aims to showcase the excellent places you can visit by hoping on one of their trains. We decided to take this opportunity to venture 90 minutes up the line to beautiful Oxford for a weekend city break as, despite meeting there at a festival, neither of us had ever spent any time in the city itself.

Hem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerox22

Taking our love for hotel bars to the extreme, we checked into The Malmaison – a former prison which just so happens to also be a medieval castle! But of course! It certainly is a very impressive sight and we had a lot of fun exploring the hotel and its impressive grounds. With a central location and incredible cocktail bar, it was without doubt the nicest prison either of us has ever stayed in.

Hem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesterner

Whenever we visit anywhere new we always spend an obscene amount of time scouring Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram for nice places to eat and drink. Thankfully Oxford didn’t disappoint! We can highly recommend The Modern Baker for their delicious green macha latte and their ridiculous array of yummy cakes! We also had a great time in Brew drinking coffee whilst listening to The National on their record player – the dream! For dinner we visited SoJo to sample their much raved about dim-sum (turns out it deserves all the raves) and the fab Turl Street Kitchen, whose menu changes every day depending on what’s in season. We thought their two courses for £14.50 deal was a bit of a Saturday night bargain and oh my god look at those puddings!

Hem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesterner

We spent a lot of time just wandering around gawping at all of the pretty buildings as it really is an incredibly stunning city! We coincidentally managed to time our visit to coincide with the last day of exams so the atmosphere was one of great jubilation and we loved watching all the happy students covering each other with flour and silly-string! We also had a great time at the Story Museum which had been at the very top of our ‘to do’ list. We actually had so much fun there that we are going to dedicate a whole post to it! We also found time to visit the very Instagramable Modern Art gallery to see Lynn Hershman’s Origins of the Species (Part 2), as seen above, which is on until 9th August.

Hem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesternerHem and Away: Oxford #beagreatwesterner

See? Pretty beautiful! After spending a long time browsing the historic Covered Market as the rain poured down outside, we were relieved to see some sunshine and decided to make the most of it by paying a visit to the gorgeous Botanic Gardens followed by a mosey around Christ Church college. There’s just so much to look at! Did we miss any Oxford gems? If so, let us know, as we need an excuse to go back!

Uhoh, I’ve fallen head over heels for Rachel Riley‘s dresses! And no, before you starting Googling, it’s not the one from Countdown….although there are still some rather large numbers involved sadly! Much like our beloved Poppy, Rachel Riley design beautiful clothes for children but, as I have now discovered, they also have a range of wonderful pieces for ladies. Stocked over at House of Fraser, I am now obsessed with their vintage inspired prints and shapes! What a conundrum for my bank balance.

Raddery Dress £59.50 from Jack Wills

I do love a nice nautical and this is such a fab vintage style print from Jack Wills, featuring little sail boats, delightful old bridges, and what appears to be a man fishing from the comfort of his canoe. This dress is actually available in a different style on ASOS but I really love this take on the traditional skater dress. The fanned out skirt has perfect twirling potential!

Haute Flair Balloon Dress $79.99 from Modcloth

I am always on the look out for hot air balloon prints (who isn’t) so you can imagine the gasping that happened when this little beauty appeared on Modcloth! I practically took off! I’d love it whatever but the adorable bow, the gorgeous teal and magenta hues, and the simple A-line shape really do make this one a winner for me.

Last but not least is a dress that has been a long time coming! The cowboy print from Cath Kidston was one of the first of theirs that I truly fell in love with and it has always distressed me slightly that I’ve never been able to own a dress in the print. Well, consider me distressed no more as I was very happy to find this beauty in their latest collection! Yeehaw!
