Double Thumbs Dresses #66

Hello hello! Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses! It’s time once again for our frocktacular roundup of the dresses deemed worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval….

Mary-Kate Dress £49 by Louche
Mary-Kate Dress £49 by Louche at Joy

We kick off with this groovy little number from Louche. Those big yellow blooms certainly cut the mustard for me and you’ll be living life full on flower power with those awesome sleeves and nipped in waist.

A-Line Striped Dress £29.99 from Zara
A-Line Striped Dress £29.99 from Zara

Time to stripe a pose in this affordable frock from Zara, which I believe is ticking off at least three SS16 trends. I am loving the cheeky chevron action up top and hidden round the back there are some delightful little buttons for you to faff around with every time you put it on/take it off.

Cherry Blossom Dress £45 from Miss Selfridge
Cherry Blossom Dress £45 from Miss Selfridge

It’s never too early to get excited about cherry blossom season (Instagram is no doubt rubbing its collective knees with anticipation) and, come the time, what better dress to waft around in than this stunning Miss Selfridge affair? Look at those sleeves! *faints*

Cupid's Heart Printed Dress £42.41 from Chicwish
Cupid’s Heart Printed Dress £42.41 from Chicwish

Heart prints are inevitably cropping up all over the shop at the moment but this Chicwish number has really caught my eye. The colours are just great and, to me at least, it has a slight Kate Spade feel to it without the Kate Spade price-tag. Winner!

Rajaa Whale Print Dress £49 from Louche
Rajaa Whale Print Dress £49 from Louche

You’ll have a whale of a time in this Louche dress which whaley does has a totally excellent print that channels the deep blue sea in colour and theme!

Coral Reef Print Party Dress £75 from Yumi

Bunting Print Day Dress £45 from Yumi
Bunting Print Day Dress £45 from Yumi
Multicoloured Village Print Skater Dress £45 from Yumi
Multicoloured Village Print Skater Dress £45 from Yumi

We finish with a triple whammy of Yumi dresses (click the dresses for their individual links) who really do appear to have hacked into my mind palace for their new season inspiration. Colourful houses? Check. Bunting? Check. Err scallops? Check! It’s all quite dreamy and my bank balance is truly afraid.

Girls with curls and Sugarhill Boutique

Girls with curls and Sugarhill BoutiqueGirls with curls and Sugarhill Boutique

Last Wednesday we both managed to have the day off work so took the opportunity to pack in a full day of blogging fun in beautiful Bath! Naturally it wouldn’t be a proper blogger day out without taking some outfit photos so after having our hair perfectly cut and curled by the delightful ladies at Frontline Style (our full review will be up on Total Bath shortly so keep your eyes peeled locals) we frolicked around near some of our favourite Bath buildings in some super lovely Sugarhill Boutique pieces.

We both adore the fun and feminine style of Sugarhill boutique so it was an absolute joy to be able to choose and style a few of their Summer pieces! We are both usually drawn to their quirkier prints (dogs, lollies, massive toucans – that sort of brilliant shenanigans) but thought this might be a nice opportunity to try something a little different.

Victoria chose the gorgeous blue Stripe Organza Midi Skirt* which looked breathtakingly good as she swished her way around Bath! It’s so elegant and flattering and looked perfect when teamed with the white Emma Shell Top* which features a very pretty broderie detail. She finished her look with her white Forever Comfort sandals from Next* and an extra pop of colour in the form of her staple Boden Westminster handbag*.

I went for the vintage inspired Aurora dress* which features the most beautiful pastel floral print. The colours look stunning and the fit and flare cut make it such a comfortable dress to wear. I was, as always, thrilled to discover the dress has pockets which I will no doubt be stashing all manner of things into at a Summer wedding near you! I teamed the dress with sheer dotty tights from Pamela Mann at MyTights*, a mustard belt from Primark, cream brogues from Faith at Debenhams (old) and, seeing as great blogging duo minds think alike, an extra pop of colour in the form of my staple Boden Milan clutch*!

Don’t drop your phone in the Bath….

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

What happens when you challenge two bloggers to have a swell day out on a £100 budget? They have a day full of macaroons, mulled wine and markets of course!

We recently accepted a challenge set by Huawei, who are celebrating the launch of the Ascend Y550 smartphone, to show what we consider to be an excellent day out in the UK. We both quickly agreed that a day trip to Bath would be just the ticket! Bath is one of our favourite places in the South West, especially at Christmas time when the city comes alive thanks to the sights and smells of the Bath Christmas Markets. Bath is truly buzzing, but this isn’t just due to the markets, oh no, there is so much more to see…

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We started the day the only way we know how, coffee and cake (and smashed avocado on toast, obvs). Having only previously been to the recently opened Colonna and Hunter for a cheeky 1/3, we decided to pay them an early morning visit as we had heard wonderful things about their food. We planned our day over a couple of flat whites and, as you can see, with all that caffeine our ‘To Do’ list got a little bit ambitious! Although, apart from the cat cuddling, I think we managed to tick everything off! We apologise to all of the cats of Bath that didn’t get cuddles that day…our bad. We then went for a little stroll around the Royal Crescent to pick out our future estates and then, after at least 12 minutes of exercise, we were swiftly back into the other Colonna, Colonna and Small’s, for more caffeine. It’s a hard life.

One of the highlights of our bonza Bath day was the wonderful Bath Artisan Market, where we finally had chance to meet Amy Laws (there’s only one, after all), a lovely and super talented lady whose dresses we often feature on She and Hem! They are so blooming good! Unfortunately it was the last market of the year but, never fear, they start again in February and we would totally recommend that you pop along if you are ever browsing in Bath. We’ll be dreaming of those mincepie macaroons from Marilyn’s for a very long time to come (thankfully we bought quite a few to keep us going!) and Oscar the cat by Ben Rothery is now at the very top of our Christmas lists (see, we did cuddle a cat after all!). It was then time for a delicious roast and a mulled cider at the Bath Brew House before heading off in search of more festive frivolity!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We rounded off our day with a look around the lovely Bath Christmas Market, which had quietened down after a busy day of trading. Bath is such a picturesque city anyway but exploring the 170(ish, apparently) wooden chalets selling everything from local cheeses to wooden ties is a charming experience and, with a mulled wine in hand, a lovely way to spend a crisp December evening. We left laiden with goodies from Speckled Wood, My Bear Hands and some yummy blackcurrant rum liqueur from Friary Liqueurs. A merry Christmas indeed!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

Do you think you could have a better time than we did for £100? I know it’s QUITE the ask but the very kind people at Huawei are feeling the Christmas spirit (or perhaps have just been drinking them) as they would like to offer one of you the chance to win your own super stylish Ascend Y550 4G smartphone and £100 if you share your itinerary in the comments below! Good luck everyone!

Last Friday after indulging in a jolly gin-fueled tea party to celebrate all of those little life achievements that often get neglected due to busy schedules, we decided to throw on our new summer glad rags and head to our local park to continue the party! We are so thrilled that we did as we were greeted by a colourful mini-meadow of beautiful flowers.

She and Hem | RareShe and Hem | RareShe and Hem | Rare | Solillas She and Hem | Rare

Victoria: I wore a black embroidered trim playsuit from Rare* with over-sized sunglasses from Accessorize. My super bright orange nail polish is from Missguided and oh boy, I have found the comfiest shoes ever! They are handmade Menorcan sandals from Solillas*. I had planned on saving these for my upcoming holiday to Tunisia, but when I tried them on with this playsuit I was pleasantly surprised about how perfectly the turquoise complimented the embroidery, and the stylish deal was done. Marvelous!

She and Hem | RareShe and Hem | Rare

Jo: I adore this lovely floral summer dress from Rare*, the beautiful shades of green and orange look so pretty together and it’s just so easy to wear! It doesn’t crease (praise be!) and the slightly heavy material means there is no risk of a breezey disaster. Perfect English Summer wear! I accessoried it simply with a pair of cream Faith brogues from the Debenhams sale and my go to Topshop sunglasses. Oh, and about one million flowers.

We’re hoping the weather stays this lovely all weekend for this years Bristol Balloon Fiesta!

Double Thumbs Dresses #36

Hello and welcome back to Double Thumbs, our bank busting roundup of frocks we consider worthy of the highly coveted She and Hem Double Thumbs seal of approval. I’ve been a bit slack on the DT front of late due to LIFE and STUFF. Anyway, as a result there will be two Double Thumbs lists this week! Three cheers for that.

Creme Cafe Print £74.95
Creme Cafe Print £74.95 from Joules
Creme Botanic Print £69.95
Creme Botanic Print £69.95 from Joules

We start with not one but two pretty dresses from Joules (aff). Both feature charming prints, with a hand drawn vintage inspired cafe/picnic scene and botanical design respectively. Does the second dress remind anyone else of a Britannica Encyclopedia entry? Just me then. It’s lovely though, right? Both dresses are so summery and cool. Get in my wardrobe!

Printed Dress with Wide Straps £59.99 from Zara
Printed Dress with Wide Straps £59.99 from Zara
Elastic Waist Dress £39.99
Elastic Waist Dress £39.99 from Zara

Another double entry! This time from Zara who are also nailing the summer dress. Both look to be my favourite sort of frock in that you could simply throw either of them on with a pair of sandals and be ready to party. Never let it be said that I’m not ready to party.

Pineapple Crush Tea Dress £55
Pineapple Crush Tea Dress £55 from Sugarhill Boutique

I’m a big fan of the brightness of this lovely fitted sundress from Sugarhill Boutique! If people are going to wear sunglasses, you may as well dress as loudly as possible eh? Has anyone else noticed the sudden prevalence of pineapple prints? Surely the fruit print of 2014.

No Peep™ Heart Print Shift Dress £45
No Peep™ Heart Print Shift Dress £45

Marks and Spencer are really bringing the pretty at the moment. If Fifties pastel loveliness is your thing (hi), then I would suggest you go take a gander at their website. My current crush is this lovely apricot shirt dress which M&S describe as not being overly feminine. Whatevs, guys.

Multi Stripe Viscose Dress £45
Multi Stripe Viscose Dress £45 by Oasis from John Lewis

This Oasis dress is super sweet! I love the candy cane colours, the slightly drunk looking stripes and that lovely nipped in waist. I couldn’t find this particular dress on their website but it is available from John Lewis.

Designer Navy Sunglasses Print Dress £32
Designer Navy Sunglasses Print Dress £32 by H! by Henry Holland from Debenhams

Henry Holland is always a good bet for a novelty print and this adorable sunglasses adorned frock is no exception. You can find this retro inspired dress at Debenhams.

Weekend Doll

She and Hem| Weekend DollWay back in She and Hem history, Double Thumbs Dresses #14 to be precise, we featured a wonderful company called Weekend Doll! We quickly fell in love with their vintage inspired pieces, especially their modern take on 40s tea dresses and twirly 50s frocks! Heaven! We were therefore delighted when they got in touch to see if we would like to choose a dress each to feature. It’s a hard life sometimes.

She and Hem| Weekend DollShe and Hem| Weekend Doll

J: I loved this blue chiffon Peter Pan Posey* collar dress from the moment I set eyes on it. It’s exactly what I look for in a dress in that it looks like the grown up version of something I would have worn when I was 7. Perfect. I’ve already worn it a few times and each time it has received numerous compliments – and not just from girls! I say! I’ve taken to wearing it with black accessories in my latest bid to look as much like an angry Alice in Wonderland as possible but I like teaming it with white tights and pastels too. The belt is from ASOS (the dress does comes with a red tie belt), the spot tights are from Oliver Bonas and my stomping boots are H! by Henry Holland. My heart sunglasses are an Amazon bargain.

V: I chose the delightful coral Maisy* dress. With it’s minty piping and beautiful big bow, it really stood out on Weekend Doll’s website. I had planned on wearing this as a day dress during the summer, but after slipping on some nude heels to take the photographs, the dress felt far too special! I’m now going to save it for a friends upcoming wedding. I kept my accessories really simple, wearing two pairs of sunglasses from Primark, as this pretty dress is definitely the star of the show!

Tooty Scrutiny: Beauty Bounty

Hello! It isn’t often that I foray into the world of beauty as, despite caking myself in makeup and cementing my hair in place most days, I just feel a little out of my depth when it comes to talking beautification. But, you know what? I LOVE reading about what other people have been using so, with that in mind, here’s what I’ve been buying, trying and loving of late.

The New

Makeupcollage1
Rimmel Scandaleyes | Urban Decay Naked 3 | Bourjois Liner Featre & Bourjois Liner Stylo | Dove Style + Care | Rimmel Fix & Protect | Body Shop Colour Crush Lipstick in Berry Me

I think part of the reason I am writing this post is (a poor attempt) to justify my recent splurge on beauty products. I had been reading so many rave reviews about the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette that when I saw Debenhams had it for 20% off I had a moment of weakness. Oops! I’ve only had it since Saturday but I already love it so much. The gorgeous neutral tones are perfect for me and I can see that I will be using it on a daily basis. I also made the mistake of popping into Boots during 3 for 2 season. I’ve been after a new eyeliner and couldn’t decide between the two Bourjois ones (felt tip! exciting!) so decided to buy them both (obviously) along with the much-lauded Rimmel Scandaleyes mascara. The Dove Heat Protection Spray, Rimmel Fix & Protect primer and Body Shop lipstick are all new versions of old favourites.

Double Thumbs Dresses #24

Oh hello Friday night, where have you been all week? What better way to celebrate the arrival of the weekend than with a cursory glance at this week’s round-up of dresses deemed worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval? Perhaps accompanied by a big glass of wine. Treat yourself!

Bike Stripe Smock Dress £50 from Sugarhill Boutique

Perpetual She and Hem favourites, Sugarhill Boutique, have come up trumps once again with this beautiful illustrated bike print dress. The smock style should flatter all frames! In fact, you might say they’ve wheelie hit the nail on the head with this bespoke frock. (I think I’ve actually used that bespoke joke before but when you’re on a roll, you’re on a roll)

In the Key of Chic Dress in Tea Time, #ModCloth
In the Key of Chic Dress in Tea Time $124.99 by Bea and Dot from Modcloth

This Modcloth dress is covered in tea bags. I repeat. THIS MODCLOTH DRESS IS COVERED IN TEA BAGS. I’ll admit that from here they look a bit like luggage tags but I assure you, on closer inspection, it contains some pre-tea great illustrations. Sadly, your tea will need to be rich in order to bag this beauty as it doesn’t come cheap at $124.99. Modcloth are currently offering free international shipping when you spend $150 though, if that makes things more tempting.

Cath Kidston Grove Rose Dress with Collar
Grove Rose Dress with Collar £70 from Cath Kidston

I warned you last week that the Cath Kidston SS14 pieces were set to take over Double Thumbs and I am nothing if not a woman of my word. This week features this gorgeous floral relaxed fit dress, which also has pockets! Wondrous.

Heart Dress £39 by Kimberley for Very

Well hey there Kimberley! As a fan of Girls Aloud (and proud!), I was pretty excited about Kimber’s foray into fashion and I have not been left disappointed. I love this long sleeved heart print dress. The colours are fab and the little white heart detailing helps make this print stand out from the crowd. You can grab the full range from Very! Double Thumbs Dresses #19

Well, it’s Monday again (boo) but that means it’s time for Double Thumbs Dresses (yay!). That’s right, I’m back once again with a round-up of dresses considered worthy enough to receive the highly coveted She and Hem Double Thumbs seal of approval. It really is highly coveted, you know. This week is a bit of an odd one in that I seem to have been attracted to very similar dresses. We begin with three rosy numbers, continue with three sparkly affairs and finish off with something completely different. Just to keep you on your toes…

Hearts & Bows Floral Romario Smock Dress £26.99 from Ark
Hearts & Bows Floral Romario Smock Dress £26.99 from Ark

Rosy frock #1 comes courtesy of Ark. It’s a gorgeous smock shape with beautifully detailed roses, which I find rather Alice in Wonderlandesque. Off with her head! As always, I’m a big fan of the Peter-Pan collar and those lovely short sleeves.

50s Prom Dress £20 from Peacocks
50s Prom Dress £20 from Peacocks

Rosy frock #2 is this dapper 50s number from Peacocks, who have consistently been producing wonderful dresses in this shape for a while now.I bought this one from Double Thumbs #13 and it gets no end of compliments whenever I wear it. Thumbs firmly in the upward trajectory.

Elise Party £85 from People Tree
Elise Party £85 from People Tree

And rosy dress #3 is this twirly wonder from People Tree. A bit more expensive than the other two but surely a dress worthy of a special occasion. Plus, it has a big bow. I’ll spend anything on a big bow.

Sleeveless Spangle Dress Gold - THE WHITEPEPPER
