Double Thumbs Dresses #89

Hello hello! Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses, our roundup of the frocks we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted double thumbs seal of approval! We both had our babies over Christmas and New Year (check out our Instagram for lots of baby spam) so the blog has had to take a bit of a back seat while we both spend time with our beautiful newborns and learn how to function on very little sleep! I am just about coming out of the foggy mess that was the first few weeks and, as my baby has decided to take a nap, I thought I’d dust off the old keyboard and find some dreamy dresses!

*FYI click on the image for a direct link to the dress*

Stripe Belted Dress £55 from Yumi
Stripe Belted Dress £55 from Yumi

First up, we are absolutely loving the new Yumi collection! It’s full of beautiful bold colours, fun prints and some excellent frocks! Our pick of the bunch is this Kate Spade-esque striped beauty. It’s a clear winner and, thanks to those lovely buttons, breast feeding friendly too! Hoorah.

Posy Shirt Dress £90 from Boden
Posy Shirt Dress £90 from Boden

We always love seeing what Boden have up their highly fashionable sleeve and their latest offerings are, as is to be expected, rather wonderful indeed. We are digging this retro long-sleeved shirt dress (BF friendly once again!) that has a super flattering fit and flare shape. It is however the fab botanical garden print that makes this one a knock out! If pink isn’t your thang it’s also available in navy.

Flower Power Pleats Dress £95 from & Other Stories
Flower Power Pleats Dress £95 from & Other Stories

Oh my God it’s like a magical unicorn threw up on a dress! This & Other Stories number is simply heavenly. It has everything! Pleats! Frills! Buttons! Colours! Sleeves! Flares! As the kids say, I die.

Ponte Fluted Dress £22 from Tu Clothing at Sainsburys
Ponte Fluted Dress £22 from Tu Clothing at Sainsburys

How dreamy is this dress by TU? I always find Sainsbury’s have incredible clothes but sadly for me (not so much for my bank balance) my local store doesn’t stock fashion. It’s a good job they sell some of their pieces online now! Anyhoo, I’m totally obsessed with those fluted sleeves!

Fast Cars Pleated Dress £75 from Cath Kidston
Fast Cars Pleated Dress £75 from Cath Kidston
Dino Sleeveless Dress £60 from Cath Kidston
Dino Sleeveless Dress £60 from Cath Kidston

Argh my novelty print klaxon cannot cope with these new Cath Kidston dresses! I also cannot cope with the fact that I won’t be able to wear either until I’ve stopped breast feeding. I NEED BUTTONS, PEOPLE. The fast car print is excellent fun and I actually really love the beige colour it’s set against. This new CK shape with sleeves and pleats is also a winner and one I hope we see more of in the future. The roarsome dinosaurs are also a sure fire hit especially as they appear on the classic CK sleeveless shape. I am all about those hidden pockets.

Poppy Print Waisted Dress £46 from Warehouse
Poppy Print Waisted Dress £46 from Warehouse

As my new baby (have I mentioned that I had a baby?) is called Poppy, it’s only right that my wardrobe should be full of them. Weirdly, the high street seems to know about this as poppy prints seem to be popping up left right and center. This Warehouse number is my current fave, mostly due to that stretchy waistband. I am all about a bit of stretch right now.

Floral Print Ruffle Trim Dress £62 from Next
Floral Print Ruffle Trim Dress £62 from Next

Good ol’ Next have got some lovely pieces in at the moment. There’s just so much detail on this stunning floral print and the high neck looks so fab with the ruffles and long sleeves. Dreamy.

Ruffle Striped Shift Dress £45 from M&S
Ruffle Striped Shift Dress £45 from M&S

Speaking of ruffles, I am also a big fan of this nautical but nice striped shift dress from M&S. It’s such a great silhouette and, praise be, there are buttons!

Frilled dress £25.99 from Pull and Bear
Frilled dress £25.99 from Pull and Bear

Last but not least, it would be remiss to be this close to Valentine’s Day and not feature a red dress! This frilled frock from Pull and Bear ticks all the V Day boxes and it’s a bit of a bargain too. You’re welcome.

We’ve written about our love of Kaleidoscope before, so we were thrilled when they got in touch to ask if we would like to style some pieces from their new all singing, all dancing Autumn Winter TV ad! We got a bit overexcited (as is standard) when we visited the TV AD shop and were presented with a whole host of autumnal shades, lovely knits and one heck of a faux fur coat. We did sort of go for a bull in a china shop approach to choosing these outfits (we just wanted it all, OK?) but thankfully I think we’ve just about pulled them off!

We both tend to gravitate towards anything yellow so it was no surprise when Victoria plumped for the gorgeous Pleat Detail Elasticated Print Skirt*. After a lot of umming and ahhing she eventually decided to go all matchy matchy on me by teaming it with the Dipped Back Hem Geometric Print Top*. The print is a little darker IRL than we thought it would be but I think it looks flippin’ brilliant and, key for us, is totally pregnancy friendly thanks to the elasticated waistband. It’s going to look so cute this season with thick tights and chunky boots and that top is going to look lovely thrown on with some jeans for an autumnal stroll. I can see both pieces becoming key AW wardrobe staples! Never one to turn down more yellow, Victoria also went for the Open Check Coatigan*, a word neither of us have tired of saying, which is just such a super piece for this time of year. It’s so cosy and the perfect extra layer to wear as the weather turns chillier.

I went for the Tie Neck Print Smock Dress* which has a delightful eye catching print and, my fave, a tie bow collar! I think the whole thing gives off quite a 70s vibe and when I wore it to work this week it received a heck of a lot of compliments. Being pretty pregnant right about now, I sized up a couple of sizes to accommodate the bump so I was a bit concerned about how it might look on me but I needn’t have worried as it’s such a flattering shape and looks fab!  I also couldn’t resist nabbing the Oversized Faux Fur Jacket* which was calling my name from the moment I watched the advert. It’s so fun and so warm! Everyone needs one of these in their wardrobe. I am now desperate for it to get colder!

Shoe wise, we both fell hard for the Pom Pom Detail Lurex Pumps* which, thankfully for us, Kaleidoscope were happy for us both to style! Shake your pom poms, indeed! They are so great and the perfect flats for party season thanks to their furry friend and, did we mention, they are super sparkly too!

Two Cath Kidston posts in a month! Well aren’t you a lucky bunch? After their super successful book and pencil collection (here), Cath Kidston are back with a bang with their first Disney X Cath Kidston capsule collection. Cute prints teamed with Disney characters? Umm, yes please! What a truly magical combination and whether a Disney fan or not, we are sure you will find it truly wonderful! The first drop, which celebrates 90 years since the first Winnie-the-Pooh book was published, hits stores and the website today, with the Mickey and Minnie Mouse items due on 5th December – just in time to add to your Christmas lists!

Our favourite item is the Balloon Spot Short Sleeve Dress*, which also comes in a cute skirt. We love the cornflower blue colour and it perfectly combines Cath’s cheerful trademark polka dot print and AA Milne’s adorable Winnie-the-Pooh and friends, not to mention loads of super cute balloons! And you know how much we like a balloon here at She and Hem! We’ve also got our eyes on the gorgeous yellow and grey baby bodysuits for mini She and Hem, who we must admit were very well behaved during this windy photo shoot. So much so that we decided to add a (not so) little bump picture to the post below – our very own honey pots. Aww. Do let us know your favourite piece from the collection!

The Winnie-the-Pooh x Cath Kidston collection is limited edition so you may need to move fast if you want get your bear paws on them! We certainly enjoyed larking around in our own version of Hundred Acre Wood in them so big thanks to Cath for sending these beauties our way.

Kaleidoscope of Colour

She and Hem | Kaleidoscope of ColourShe and Hem | Kaleidoscope of ColourShe and Hem | Kaleidoscope of ColourBlimey, I hope you’ve got your sunglasses on as this is one colourful extravaganza! How beautiful are all these pieces? They are all from Kaleidoscope, a brand neither of us had heard of before but who we are now firm fans of due to their huge range of fun fashion and accessories. We had a wail of a time browsing their website as we selected our bits and bobs for this post. There’s just so much to choose from!

She and Hem | Kaleidoscope of ColourShe and Hem | Kaleidoscope of ColourShe and Hem | Kaleidoscope of Colour

I (Jo) was immediately drawn to the Riviera inspired Print Cotton Rick Skirt* as I just love the super bright yellow colour and I thought it had a hint of Blair Waldorf about it – always a selling point for me! It’s a really lovely and comfortable skirt to wear with a nice thick belted waistband and deep pockets to hide your bon bons. Kaleidoscope themselves actually style this skirt with the blue Notch Neck Blouse* I’m wearing and I thought it looked so good that I couldn’t help but plump for it too. I love the soft silky feel of the fabric and although it’s a slightly looser fit than I would normally go for, I know I’ll be wearing this flowy number non-stop over the coming months. The Sharana Leather Block Heel Sandals* are actually Clarks (one of a number of brands stocked on the website) and look like something straight out of Clueless! Blair meets Cher? I think this whole look is one of my absolute favourites!

Victoria went straight in for her Dungaree Dress* like a woman on a mission – she was all about that pinafore life! And what a good move it was as she looked brilliant in it and spent a bizarrely long time raving about the adjustable buttons. Like with my top, her pretty Broderie Anglais Sleeveless Top* came up a little on the large size, so it may be worth ordering a size below your regular size. We were both really impressed with the quality of both pieces and they will definitely be staples in Victoria’s wardrobe throughout the summer and beyond. I can totally see her rocking that pinafore in winter with tights and a long sleeve bereton.  The Metallic Detail Cut-Out Ballerinas* finish of the outfit perfectly as they are such a beautiful colour and  are nice and practical thanks to the small ankle strap

Round the Talacre Twist

Round the twist | Talacre | Boden Round the twist | Talacre | BodenRound the twist | Talacre | Boden

I hope you all like looking at photos of lighthouses! A few weeks ago, along with a group of chums, I attended the Stewart Lee ATP Festival in a gloriously sunny Prestatyn North Wales. This is a part of the World I had never been. Before we set off on our Welsh adventure I spent some time, as I always do, on good ol’ Instagram checking to see if there was anything I should try and see or consume whilst I was in the local area. It wasn’t long before I came across Point of Ayre lighthouse at Talacre which looked too good to miss! Built in 1776, the lighthouse fell into disuse in 1884 and has no shortage of spooky ghost stories attached to it. SOLD.

Round the twist | Talacre | Boden

It proved a big hit and we spent quite some time photographing it from every angle available and marveling at its very existence. I didn’t really set out to write a blog post about my time there but I thought the photos were so lovely and colourful that I would share them. Shout out to our beautiful friend Ellie (whose blog you should seriously check out) for placing herself in the most picture perfect position whilst surveying the scene. I love the photo of her above so much!

I decided to match the sunshine in this beautiful yellow Dolly frock form Boden*. It’s such a lovely comfortable dress to wear thanks to the super light material and stretchy waistband (wahey more icecream for ME). I also flippin’ love the sleeves which are my dream length with a nice loose fit. One thing to note however is the wrap front design does mean there is a bit of a flap which meant I had quite a lot of fun retaining my modesty in the wind (and it was real windy) – thankfully I was wearing trusty black tights at the time so it wasn’t too much of an issue! I’ve worn it plenty of times since though and no flap flapping has been required, much to my relief and those close to me. I teamed the dress with matching yellow sunglasses from Boden* (similar here), my trusty Dusty Rose Superga* sneakers (perfect for attacking the mountainous sand dunes) and my pink festival wristband because I’m so hip like that.

Swimmers and Sunbathers with Laura Ashley

Swimmers and Sunbathers with Laura Ashley

We didn’t need any encouragement to dip our toes in when Laura Ashley kindly asked us if we would like to style some pieces from their gorgeous St Ives Collection for their blog (which you can read here!). If you read She and Hem regularly you will know that we live for fun prints so naturally we fell hook, line and sinker for all of the Sunbathers and Swimmers pieces. It was love at first sight!

The Sunbathers print with its quirky parasol laden ladies all having a fabulous time at the beach is just the perfect print for Summer. We were both immediately drawn to the Linen Shift Dress* and were not disappointed when it arrived. It really makes a splash! It’s such a lovely easy style to wear and we love that it will look just as fab with sandals and a straw bag as it does with wedges and an evening cocktail. However, whilst we wait for the warmer weather to arrive,  we opted to style it with some white polka dot tights from UK Tights*, red and white Boden* flats and a Laura Ashley Classic Crew Neck cardigan*. We think all the pops of red really tie this outfit together and makes for one smashing look.

It’s fair to say that we are both totally obsessed with the Swimmers Print Ankle Grazer Trousers*, which is unusual for a pair of self-confessed dress addicts. They are so beautifully made and, once again, really lend themselves to being dressed up or down. It can be hard to find novelty print trousers that don’t completely dominate an outfit but thanks to the subtly of those lovely swimmers these do the job perfectly. They are definitely a great way of testing the water when it comes to wearing patterned trousers! We love them so much that we are going to be synchronised swimmers having both since picked up a pair! We styled the trousers with the Bather’s Linen Vest* Top (don’t you love it when a great print comes in more than one style?) and some very SS16 silver metallic shoes.

A huge thank you to Laura Ashley for sending us our new Summer looks. We love the retro vibe of these outfits and can’t wait to see what they’ll be making waves with next. See you at the seaside!

Winter warmers with Oliver Bonas

Oliver Bonas is one of our favourite stores! If we see a branch when we’re out and about, we are straight in there to peruse their wares. You can try, but you just can’t stop us! Their range is wonderfully diverse, from fun fashion to funky furniture, and everything is just so colourful and alluring. I (Victoria) am not much of an interiors enthusiast but there is something about their furniture collections that makes me weak at the knees. I put their Herbert Wood Chest on my Christmas list every year, and I will continue to do so until my husband Santa delivers. Keep your fingers crossed for me, yeah?

Something else I’ll be putting on my Christmas list this year is the Mint Textured Coat. It’s the candy-coloured coat of my dreams! I’m a big fan of it’s relaxed style and smooth texture. Relaxed and smooth…thinking about it, it’s a lot like me really. Me and this coat, we were mint to be! I promise I’ll keep it in mint condition.

Possibly even smoother than both me and the coat is the grey V Neck Teddy Bear Coat that Jo is wearing. When taking these pictures I found it nigh on impossible to stop stroking it. It could be the softest, loveliest coat ever made and it looks blooming awesome on. It’s hard to put into words exactly how delicately fluffy it is. All I can say is that I wish it came in blanket form.

If you are a regular reader of our blog you will know how much we love Poppy. So much so that dresses from the Budgie Collection even feature on our blog business cards! They are so pretty, there is really nothing fowl about them!  Poppy are really spoiling us this season, as they have not only released the Budgie Collection, but also the insanely gorgeous Kew Gardens Collection. Inspired by a day trip to Kew Gardens, the fun floral prints are so good that we may need to call the garden police for some lawn and order. They are definitely our favourite designs since the Hardware Collection.

During our photoshoot with the lovely Poppy team for the seriously cool Snowstorm Collection, we were very lucky ladies indeed and posed for a few photographs in these four glorious pieces before they were even released! Thanks Poppy! Above Victoria wears the Iris Navy Budgie dress and Jo wears the Mabel White Budgie dress. Below, Victoria wears the Freda Orchard White, and Jo wears Freda Kew Gardens, whilst we try our hardest to look Kew(t).

Accessories to Murder #16 Bag Special

Hello and welcome to the 16th Accessories to Murder. Are you ready to delve into the world of amazing accessories? Excellent! Without further ado, here are the accessories that have made it onto this week’s She and Hem’s Most Wanted. It’s a big ol’ bag bonanza this week!

Origami Boat Shoulder Bag | The Whitepepper | She and Hem | Accessories to Murder
Origami shoulder bag from The Whitepepper via ASOS

I used to have a titanic fear of novelty boat bags, but that ship sailed when I laid eyes on this Origami shoulder bag from The Whitepepper via ASOS. Yes, it maybe a novelty bag, but it looks big enough to use day to day and definitely floats my boat.

Dino Clutch Bag | The Whitepepper | She and Hem | Accessories to Murder
Dino Clutch from The Whitepepper via ASOS

Boom! This Dinosaur clutch bag is dino-mite. You can always rely on The Whitepepper for a great animal clutch. Remember those unicorn beauts? This season, you will mostly find me carrying this dino whilst zealously humming the Jurassic Park theme tune. It’ll be roarsome.

Cara Camera Bag | Accessorize| She and Hem | Accessories to Murder
Cara Camera Bag from Accessorize

Accessorize have updated their cute Cara Camera Bag, although I’m sorry to tell you that you still can’t take a selfie with it. Unlucky. If that makes you a little snappy, perhaps you should go for their Apple Juice Bag instead? It’s very a-peeling indeed! Having admired it in store several times, I would say this fun and fruity little number is just about big enough to carry your essentials in.

I’ve really been impressed with New Look’s selection of bags ever since getting my amazing Orange clutch that I took along to the Company Awards last year. This year, they have gone bonkers for bananas and preposterous for pineapples. Not to mention wacky about watermelon, ludicrous for lemons and silly for strawberries. What a bunch of fruitcakes! I just couldn’t feature New Look without giving you the scoop on their delightful Ice Cream Clutch. Perfect for any day of the week, especially a Sundae…

I’ve been trying to get my hands on one of these Next Drumstick Clutch bags since I first saw them pop up on Next’s Instagram during a recent press day. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get one in any local stores or online, until the other day when I managed to track them down, hiding in the clearance section online! Sweet victory! What’s even sweeter is, that it’s just been reduced from £32 to £11. Definitely the best bargain I’ve seen all year.

Lastly I’ve chosen this Postcard Clutch, again from Next. Although both bags are called clutch’s, they do both come with chains, so can be worn over the shoulder. If Next bring out any more incredible bags, I’ll be sure to keep you posted!

Everything’s coming up Warehouse

She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse

We managed to get a rare couple of days off work together this week and, after a few healthy hours of slobbing around in our PJs, decided to take full advantage of the beautiful Autumnal weather and headed out for a stroll.

She and Hem She and Hem She and Hem She and Hem She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse

Feeling rather seasonal, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to go pumpkin shopping and ended up with two rather gorgeous specimens that we have named Phil and Grant. Normal friends take photos of their pumpkins in public, right?

She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse

It was bizarrely warm for late October and we ended up casting our coats asunder for a proper play in the leaves as we had a good gossip and a catch up. We are so lucky to live next to such a gorgeous park!

She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse She and Hem | Everything's coming up Warehouse

Inspired by our frocks, we attempted a bit of a sixties vibe by adding our Boden* coats and white tights. Both of our dresses are from Warehouse* and we thought the colours looked rather spiffing together! It’s always nice when quite basic styles have fun details, such as Victoria’s snazzy collar and the excellent buttons on mine! Victoria finished her look with shoes from New Look and I teamed my look with a Gallic Rooster beret* (hello old friend), Topshop shoes and a black belt from ASOS.
