Happy Friday everyone! Most Fridays upon finishing work we head to an all night disco party home, put our pyjamas on and drink all of the gin. Sometimes with friends, but usually alone with our cats. Luckily, when we can persuade our pals (they do exist, honest!) to hang out with us, they all love a simple G&T too. Very fortunate, as we can be predictably lazy when it comes to the art of mixology. However, last weekend we decided to step out of our boozy comfort zone and hit the hard stuff. Fruity pink cocktails! When excitedly hitting the supermarket, we quickly realised that neither of us really knew how to make anything other than a snowball, so we had a little helping hand from the experts at thebar.com.

Luckily for us, thebar.com is really simple to use, with a handy search function on the main page, you just type in a spirit that you like (it doesn’t have to be gin!) or a cocktail you would like to try and hundreds of tasty recipes will pop up in seconds. As most have been sent in by members of the site, there are lots of fun ideas with suitably charming names, and well, they just all look so pretty. As a gift to you our loyal readers, we decided to try and throw ourselves a She and Hem style cocktail party. With added massive birthday cake. No, it wasn’t anyone’s birthday, we just like massive cakes, ok?

I’m pretty partial to a Prosecco (not that I like to wine on about it…), so I was very keen to try a French 21. Oh là là indeed! For some of the cocktails, we went a wee bit rouge with the ingredients to suit our tastes, but with the French 21, the only switch we made was using a lemon peel spiral rather than lime spiral. These were used a lot elsewhere, and we didn’t want them hogging all of the limelight…

After lining up our top three cocktails from the evening, there was no clutching at straws and, in a strong field of creatively named confections, the clear winner was the decidedly more Ronseal Archers Peach Schnapps & Cranberry Juice. Easy to make, refreshing and fun. It was sodalicious!

Hem and Away: Gin Bop

Hem and Away : Gin Bop

Last Friday, after hanging out with some giant perfume bottles, we made our way to the real reason we were in London….Gin Bop! As big lovers of both gin AND bopping, we knew this going to be our sort of time! Held at the Rivington Grill in Greenwich, Gin Bop was a ticketed event which granted you access to an evening of live jazz, gin based games (!), a hog roast and, of course, gin!

Experts from Hendrick’s, Beefeater, Tanqueray, Langley’s No.8 and Bombay Sapphire were all on hand to whisk up delicious cocktails from their respective bars (or buses, in Hendrick’s case). Being Hendrick’s girls at heart, we headed straight for their station which was parked up alongside the hog roast. A dream combination if ever there was one. Their delightful bartender served us two yummy Flora Doras in teacups which we then took onto their bus with us. Sadly the bus was candle lit and our already struggling camera simply couldn’t cope so you’ll have to take our word for it that it was pretty darn great.

We then headed upstairs to Tanqueray who had a lovely sofa filled area all to themselves! We had a good chat with their bar men about the cocktails on offer (all the stations had a menu of three) but, in all honesty, we knew the moment we saw the slush machine what was going to happen! Behold, the Tanqueray Frozen Aviation, the most grown up slush puppie you will ever see. It was delicious!

We were already feeling a little bit squiffy after two cocktails but we persevered onwards to both Langley’s and Beefeater (Soz Bombay Sapphire). Unfortunately, neither of us were big fans of our Langley’s cocktails (a No.8 Fizz and a New Orleans G&T) so we decided to leave them (I know!) and instead headed to Beefeater who lured us in with talk of Earl Grey. Thankfully this cocktail more than made up for the disappointment of our previous drink and we ended the night on a high…and a hic.

A big thanks to Hendrick’s for the tickets! You delicious people.

Things Can Only Get Feta

She and Hem | Things Can Only Get Feta | Culture Vulture Direct

It would be fair to say that a little She and Hem celebration has been on the cards for a while. Both of us have been having a pretty stressful swell time securing new jobs and we never really did toast the success that was being nominated for a Company Magazine Award. So, with a luxurious bit of summer holiday time on our hands, we decided to have a little grown ups tea party. Any excuse for a cheeky lunchtime gin, eh?

A swift trip to the Co-op later and we had all of the yummy ingredients needed for a perfect afternoon of Brie and Hem…..plus a reduced to clear cake, obvs. Our twee tea celebration was the perfect opportunity to crack out our jazzy cutlery and cheese plates  from Culture Vulture Direct*. We love how all of our mismatched items look together, it goes to show how a quick rummage through the kitchen cupboards can produce something that looks so special. Perhaps now is the time to crack on with that amazing cafe idea we once had…

Whisky Business: Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkinheader

Last Saturday rain delayed play when it scuppered our plans to go and see some fireworks. Boo hiss etc. We were feeling a little glum as we sat inside looking out at the gloomy weather and decided that we would our swap soggy sparklers for soggy bottoms and attempt to bake ourselves a feelgood pie. A tasty Hummingbird Bakery pumpkin pie to be precise! It was also a nice excuse for us to try out a different style of blog post. The sort where we make stuff! Good heavens.

Accessories to Murder #1

Here is the very first Accessories to Murder, a new feature in which we will bring to your attention the accessories we believe to be a right steal. Be it bags, necklaces, shoes or rings, we’ll give you the leads and urge you to break out and browse these criminally tempting accessories.

Gilbert & George Gin Necklace £33.00 from Iota Bristol

Ever since Jo introduced me to the wonderjuice that is Gin, I’ve hardly sipped on anything else, apart from tea of course! This necklace was commissioned by She and Hem favourites Tatty Devine to celebrate the work of Gilbert & George. This necklace is sure to bring you many compliments, especially from fellow G&T lovers.

After spending several hours browsing for accessories that I thought were special enough to make it on this post, I was delighted to find the magical Jewellery by Jaymie. Jaymie has created beautiful collections, such as ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s‘, ‘Tea Party‘, and ‘Great Gatsby‘. She also designs special one off pieces that you will not be able to find on the high street. Jaymie treats each piece as a miniature work of art, and furthermore, each piece has been hand drawn, which means  all are unique and absolutely lovely. Who could resist? Not me!

Here are my favourite items.

Sparkly Hearts & Cat Collar Clips, £10, Jewellery by Jaymie.

Hearts! Cats! Sparkly Hearts and Cats! If anything will inspire me to get my ears pierced, it’s slightly mad but beautiful jewellery like these gorgeous collar clips which can also be worn as ear rings. At £10, not only do they have multiple purposes, but it’s an affordable way to jazz up an old outfit.

Dapper Cat Necklace, £11, Jewellery by Jaymie.

Ok ok, it’s another cat item. Although, I think I can use my get out of jail free card here, as this is not just any cat.  This is a Dapper Cat, it’s wearing a polka-dot bow tie and it wants you to take it home.

Holly Golightly and Cat Ring, £12, Jewellery by Jaymie.

Last, but by no means least, my personal favourite item. People need to be made aware of this ring. It’s a must for any Breakfast at Tiffany’s fan. It features the iconic Audrey Hepburn as ‘Holly Golightly’ and her precious cat, ‘Cat’ (the amazing acting cat, Orangey). If anyone wants to treat me, I’ll take this.

There I was thinking I had triumphed and found the ultimate undiscovered accessories online. Oh but wait! I’ve stumbled across Hannah Zakari and these accessories are really rather dreamy. Here are a few highlights from this marvelous website, where you can buy items from many designers, all under one roof. Hannah Zakari, I salute you!

Chapstick Brooch, £8, Kate Rowland.

I hope you have enjoyed and have been inspired to do some investigative work of your own.

Have a great weekend!
