Able Mabel Headbands

If you are not local to Bristol, you may not have heard of Able Mabel, also known as Emily. We first met way back in 2014 when we did this awesome shoot at Heartfelt Vintage, and then again, when she was my (Victoria) hair stylist for my wedding in 2015! I wish she could style my hair everyday. Emily is one of those annoyingly clever people who can do everything. Not only does she do bridal hair and make up and runs kids and hen parties, but she also creates incredible bespoke headpieces including hats and headbands! When we first saw a glimpse of her gorgeous handbands on Instagram, we both thought how ‘She and Hem’ they were, as they are so quirky and colourful. So we were thrilled when Emily got in touch to ask if we’d like to pick some to style. Heck yes.

Aren’t they lovely? Our little ladies also got in on the action and don’t they look adorable? They are two seriously stylish toddlers. Neither of the girls have ever kept a headband on for as long as these. Ok, so we may have bribed them a teeny bit with some chocolate treats, but they both seemed to forget they were wearing them after a little while. Hair play girls, hair play.

Able Mable announced yesterday that her Liberty print children’s headbands, like the ones the girls are wearing, are going to be available on Bob and Blossom very soon – so keep your eyes peeled for that! Welcome to the 60’s

To celebrate Hairspray the Musical coming to town, we decided to see if we could bring the 60’s style into 2016. We do love a challenge! We grabbed our make up, hair straighteners and all the hairspray we could find and set about creating two 60’s inspired hair and make up looks.

The transition from the delicate ladylike looks of the 1950’s to the fancy-free 1960’s trends was epic, with the 1960’s giving us mini skirts, mods and brilliant bobs. Idols such as Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Edie Sedgwick introduced bold, graphic flicked eyeliner, pretty pale skin (hooray!) and nude lips. The soft nude lips were a real contrast from the popular red lip of the 1950’s and helped to emphasize the exaggerated eyes, which were heavy on the black mascara and fake lashes. A lot like today, the cheekbones were accentuated with a highlighter and a light rosy blush was applied.

In regards to hair, along with the famous beehives and bouffants, luckily for us hair was also worn long throughout the 1960’s, sometimes with a lift, thanks to some harsh backcombing and a ton of hairspray! I (Victoria) love a good ol’ beehive, but unfortunately I don’t really have the skills when it comes to updo’s, so instead I pulled the top of my hair into a small quiff fixed with an oversized gingham bow from Beau xoxo. To create the ringlet effect on the lengths, I used a really simple but effective trick and put my hair in a high bun for the morning, spritzing it with Rush hairspray to help add volume and twirling around my fingertips after taking it out of the bun. Bonza! Jo parted her hair into a gorgeous side parting, pulled the rest of the top of her hair back, and used Batiste dry shampoo to add volume. She then straightened the lengths to create a chic 60’s style.

To create our looks we both used Monu professional primer, Rimmel lasting foundation in Ivory and Bobbi Brown’s brow kit in brunette, because we love to rock a dark brow. Jo used an NYX eye-shadow in Girl Talk shade, her eyeliner is from Accessorize and her beautiful blush is from Laura Mercier and it is in the shade coral red. To finish the look she used NYX lipgloss in angel food cake. Yum! I focused on my eyes and used Supercat liner from Soap and Glory and lashings of Benefit’s roller lash mascara. For my face I used Benefit’s wonderful high beam highlighter and Bath and Unwind’s Fratboy blush. My lips sparkled thanks to Bobbi Brown’s pink apricot shimmer lipstick.

London Fashion Week AW15: Day Two

We started off Day 2 of LFW with a trip to the Orla Kiely showcase (which we have written a post about here!). After that, we had some time to kill between shows, so we decided to go and check out the ever fabulous Somerset House. Pretty standard London Fashion Week activities I’m sure you will agree. What we are not so accustomed to is how we traveled there… in a stretch hummer! The lovely Kristabel from I Want You To Know captured this in her awesome Fashion Week Vlog. Be warned, the vlog does feature me (Victoria) getting a little over excited and doing what the kids are now calling #hummerdance.

I wore the Square Print Pleat Skirt Dress from The Whitepepper with probably the most worn item in my wardrobe ever, my yellow Ingrid Coat from Boden* (now in the sale!). I accessorised with fun spotty tights from UK Tights*, white ASOS Strike Heels and a yellow Westminster bag from Boden*. Jo wore a gorgeous Needle and Thread tulle skirt from ASOS, with a vintage blue jacket from Heartfelt Vintage and floral Emilie top from Boden*. Her Alice Heels are also from Boden and that glorious pink bag is Kate Spade.

Our jazzy outfits proved to be quite the hit on the cobbles, and we ended up popping up all over the place. Some of our favourite features we saw over the weekend were Yahoo’s best street style, ASOS Fashion Finder, STYLELDN and Boden Diaries. We had such a blast that we often struggled to pull our best ‘we are very serious about fashion’ faces.

We had quite a busy schedule that afternoon, but our favourite show was the couture collection from Hellavagirl. The show was a kaleidoscopic dream! Vibrant, dramatic and seriously sparkly. Just look at those incredible giant sequin bow headbands!

Having been up since 7am and in need of a pick me up, we made use of our central location and decided to head back to base for a quick G&T and get changed into our chirpy Poppy frocks before heading out to our evening shows. Lady Gaga would be proud! I wore the Iris Navy Budgie Dress and Jo wore the Mable White Budgie Dress. Keep your eyes peeled and your beaks sharpened for a new Poppy post next week.

London Fashion Week AW15: Day 1 OOTD

London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2015 | Street Style | She and Hem | Outfit of the Day 1

During London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2015, we spent three incredibly fun days attending shows, randomly bumping into blogger buddies and drinking several palm trees worth of Vita Coco. With British fashion stronger than ever, we were so happy to be in the capital for one of our favourite events of the year. Second only to pancake day, obviously.

On day one, with a strong coffee in hand, we headed over to Somerset House super early ready for the first show of the season, J.JS Lee. After the show, and before bumping into the lovely Joseph and Kristabel, we took a few outfit photos in the midst of all the fashionable fun. We were very kindly loaned a few beautiful items from the glorious Heartfelt Vintage in Bristol. I (Victoria) wore an original 1970’s black velvet skirt with a colorful jacket by House of Frou Frou, both from Heartfelt Vintage. My white shirt is from Marks & Spencer, the yellow square shoulder bag is vintage and my new favourite Dilly heels are Orla Kiely for Clarks. Jo’s floral 1950’s dress and vintage cloche also came from Heartfelt vintage, which she teamed with a black leather jacket from Marks & Spencer, a yellow Westminster bag from Boden and black round heel ankle boots from The Whitepepper.
