When Aspire Style got in touch to ask if we’d like to style a few pieces from their ‘New In‘ section, we were a little nervous. Not because we didn’t think there would be anything that we liked, but because we were concerned we wouldn’t be able to fit into anything! These bumps are getting out of hand! How wrong we were though, as our favourite maternity fashion hack (sizing up) worked a treat.
Jo’s chevron stripe shift dress* by Closet is so striking, it’s a must for any chevron fan. Keen readers may have also spotted that it fits all of She and Hem’s dream dress requirements; it’s a good lentgh, has cute sleeves and most importantly…pockets! Dreamy. Jo kept her styling simple with black Boden boots* and spotty grey tights* from UK Tights. I picked the adorable Julita snow dress* by Louche in the hope that I’ll be able to squeeze into it a few more times over the festive period. With its Christmas trees, deer and snowflakes, it could just be the perfect Christmas print! I would say it hits the right balance between twee and subtle, but then again, during they festive period, I think anything goes. Next time Louche, plonk some candy canes on it will ya?
Whilst browsing Aspire, I spotted that fabulous pink fluffy jumper* by Yumi. Now, while I’m not usually a huge fan of pink (it doesn’t really get my party started), I felt like it had to be mine. Thanks to the loose fit, I’ve recently been layering it over a maternity top and teaming it with jeans and boots, and boy oh boy it’s like a big, warm hug. As we shot this on quite a chilly day, I wore some thick maternity tights* from UK Tights and blue Boden boots* (similar here).
Have you spotted any festive pieces that take your fancy?
Ding ding! It’s new Boden time! The happiest of all occasions. We always get overly excited when a new Boden catalogue lands on the doormat and many a She and Hem whatsapp image is exchanged as we eye up on new favourite pieces. We’ve been super lucky to work with Boden over our blogging years and they really are such a standout brand who never fail to make us smile. They recently celebrated their 25th Birthday so we would just like to wish them many happy returns (perhaps not the best turn of phrase) and here’s to many more colourful years!
Now onto the clothes! I know we’ve been real quiet about it but if you hadn’t heard, both of us our expecting little ones over the coming months. As you can imagine this has had a slight impact on what we’ve been able to wear of late and we were both a bit concerned that our beloved Boden wouldn’t be bump friendly. Ha! How silly we were as thanks to a bit of sizing up (we both went up two sizes) we both managed to comfortably fit into our dream frocks of choice. I (Jo) went for the rather sixties inspired Ursula Dress* which it’s fair to say I’m totally obsessed with. Besides looking, in my opinion, super stylish, it also refuses to crease (and as someone who considers the bedroom floor a wardrobe I applaud this) and is now my absolute go to frock for easy wear. I love the colour, plus the sleeves and pockets mean this dress ticks all my boxes! Victoria plumped for the flattering Mollie Dress* in Navy Eclipsed Spot and oh boy is this the perfect Autumn frock. We love the fun 3/4 length sleeves and the eye catching circle print! Again, it’s a really easy to wear fabric which makes it excellent maternity wear, plus it nips in at all the right places! Victoria was sure looking jolly in her Mollie.
And what Autumnal outfit isn’t complete without some boots to stomp through the leaves in? We both opted to style our dresses with the iconic Chelsea Boot* and I’m pleased to report that even with my swollen feet (TMI) these boots are outrageously comfy and definitely designed with long autumnal strolls in mind! They are the perfect all rounder and will look fab throughout the season with trousers, skirts and dresses (plus optional chunky tights of course).
We’ve written about our love of Kaleidoscope before, so we were thrilled when they got in touch to ask if we would like to style some pieces from their new all singing, all dancing Autumn Winter TV ad! We got a bit overexcited (as is standard) when we visited the TV AD shop and were presented with a whole host of autumnal shades, lovely knits and one heck of a faux fur coat. We did sort of go for a bull in a china shop approach to choosing these outfits (we just wanted it all, OK?) but thankfully I think we’ve just about pulled them off!
We both tend to gravitate towards anything yellow so it was no surprise when Victoria plumped for the gorgeous Pleat Detail Elasticated Print Skirt*. After a lot of umming and ahhing she eventually decided to go all matchy matchy on me by teaming it with the Dipped Back Hem Geometric Print Top*. The print is a little darker IRL than we thought it would be but I think it looks flippin’ brilliant and, key for us, is totally pregnancy friendly thanks to the elasticated waistband. It’s going to look so cute this season with thick tights and chunky boots and that top is going to look lovely thrown on with some jeans for an autumnal stroll. I can see both pieces becoming key AW wardrobe staples! Never one to turn down more yellow, Victoria also went for the Open Check Coatigan*, a word neither of us have tired of saying, which is just such a super piece for this time of year. It’s so cosy and the perfect extra layer to wear as the weather turns chillier.
I went for the Tie Neck Print Smock Dress* which has a delightful eye catching print and, my fave, a tie bow collar! I think the whole thing gives off quite a 70s vibe and when I wore it to work this week it received a heck of a lot of compliments. Being pretty pregnant right about now, I sized up a couple of sizes to accommodate the bump so I was a bit concerned about how it might look on me but I needn’t have worried as it’s such a flattering shape and looks fab! I also couldn’t resist nabbing the Oversized Faux Fur Jacket* which was calling my name from the moment I watched the advert. It’s so fun and so warm! Everyone needs one of these in their wardrobe. I am now desperate for it to get colder!
Shoe wise, we both fell hard for the Pom Pom Detail Lurex Pumps* which, thankfully for us, Kaleidoscope were happy for us both to style! Shake your pom poms, indeed! They are so great and the perfect flats for party season thanks to their furry friend and, did we mention, they are super sparkly too!
Our first maternity wear post! Hooray! We were both really excited about dressing for pregnancy but soon became quite distressed about the highstreets’ lack of She and Hem friendly maternity wear. Gone were the colourful dresses, the novelty prints and the flattering shapes and instead we were faced with an onslaught of black wrap dresses and shapeless smocks that really weren’t doing anything for anybody. It has been quite a challenge to dress in a way that makes us feel like we are still us. This was really important as our shapes are constantly changing and not having experienced it before it can feel quite daunting and suddenly keeping hold of your own sense of style can feel impossible. We were therefore really thrilled when we spotted these cheerful numbers from JoJo Maman Bébé and even more so when they invited us to style them.
Both dresses are SO comfy and easy to wear, a real bonus when even getting off the sofa is a struggle! We would both happily have these hanging in our wardrobes even if we weren’t expecting. The prints are so bold and colourful, not a black wrap dress in sight! Good work, JoJo! Victoria’s Navy Floral Maternity Dress* has gorgeous 3/4 length sleeves and a flattering full skirt. It looks excellent teamed with the Cosy 4-in-1 Maternity Cardigan* which will definitely be getting a lot of wear this Autumn/Winter. My (Jo) Geo Maternity & Nursing Dress* is such a great colour and I love that it’s a nursing dress as it will be just as useful post birth as it is now. The hidden slits are most definitely discreet so it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing something specifically for a pregnant lady – I just feel like me.
We are both so impressed with the quality of these dresses, the material is lovely and they really feel like investment pieces. They also require zero ironing, something we will only continue to appreciate! We both teamed our dresses with black Comfy Cotton Rich Maternity Leggings* which do exactly what they say on the tin. Boy are they comfy! We were both a bit skeptical about whether specialist maternity leggings were worth buying over just your normal leggings but the extra wide waistband, which means you can wear them over your bump, makes us feel so much more supported and, we like to think, keeps baby nice and snug. Winner!
Every August, without fail, you can find us enthusiastically chasing hot air balloons at Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. Over the past few years we’ve really gone for it and wandered over to Ashton Court for several mass ascents across the weekend, including the amazing Night Glow. This year, especially as we are both expecting, we took it a little easier and chose to just pop over to the Sunday morning ascent. As luck would have it, it was the only morning ascent of the whole fiesta due to pesky windy conditions, so we definitely picked the right day to go along! We did also manage to watch the Saturday evening ascent with friends with a picnic in Clifton, and a great time was had by all. Nevertheless, there is something so magical about the morning ascents, they are definitely worth setting a 5am alarm for. Ballooning Marvelous! Thanks to the lovely folk at Red Letter Days, we were able to access the members enclosure (hello hot drinks and bacon sarnies) which gave us the perfect position for watching the balloons take to the skies.
We always think the colourful balloons make the prefect backdrop for a style post, so we took along a few of our favourite pieces from the new Boden collection to shoot. Although we did struggle to pick our favourite bits (it’s all just so good!), you probably won’t be surprised to learn that we both fell for the same cute combo of the Button Through Mini Skirt* in blue cord (Jo) and vintage denim (Victoria), teamed with The Classic Shirt* in multi autumn trees (Jo) and solstice blue spot (Victoria). The skirts are so versatile, that neither of us have taken these skirts off since, and we’re hoping that thanks to the stretchy material, will we be wearing them a few more months into our pregnancies! We also went for matching Sally coats* in delightful shades of pink and green. Forever twinning! They are going to be so fabulous once the weather gets a bit cooler!
As we are such keen balloon enthusiasts, we are often asked if you can go for a balloon ride during the fiesta and we have been reliably informed that you can! If you fancy going up, up and away on a balloon ride and you can’t wait until next year’s fiesta, check out the Red Letter Day flights.
Hello hello! Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses, our roundup of the frocks we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted double thumbs seal of approval! Let’s crack on….
We start with a pretty bank busting number but I think you’ll agree that it was just too special not to include! Victoria and I are both obsessed with all things Needle and Thread and when they consistently bring out beautiful pieces like this it’s not hard to see why. I just wish I had an excuse to spend this much on a dress! That woodland lace embellishment is breathtaking.
Next have gone lace crazy and I for one couldn’t be happier! That little yellow number looks far pricier than its price-tag and is the perfect shade of lemon. There’s just so much beautiful detailing! I’m also loving the long-sleeved white number which is rocking a bit of a 70s vibe. It really reminds me of a dress I picked up from Topshop last Summer and subsequently wore to death (evidence).

Pow! Now that’s a bold floral! I am all about this shift dress from Warehouse which features one heck of a strong print in some seriously eye catching colours. Yes. Please.
I don’t actually remember the last time Oasis didn’t feature on Double Thumbs, so great has my love been for their SS16 collection. This is such a sweet little lace number (those ruffle sleeves!) but what I am really about is that gorgeous shade of green.
This Topshop midi has got Summer garden party written all over it (which, as luck would have it, so do I). It’s a lovely silhouette and looks like it would be a nice frock to just waft around in. As you do.
And finally….If you don’t follow us on Instagram (or you aren’t on it 24/7 like, ahem, some people I know) you might have missed my little announcement over the weekend that I’m expecting! That means there might be the odd maternity dress sneaking on to Double Thumbs over the coming months, if you don’t mind! So far I’ve really been struggling to find things I like but I take my hat off to ASOS for understanding that, weirdly enough, I’d quite like to dress like me whilst with bump! This yellow floral number is calling my name.
