Double Thumbs Dresses #61

Hello frock fans and welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses. It’s time once again to take a gander at the dresses we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval. Let’s crack on!

'Saphy' Mint Retro TV Print Rockabilly Dress £34.99 from Lindy Bop
‘Saphy’ Mint Retro TV Print Rockabilly Dress £34.99 from Lindy Bop

Channel your inner silver screen star with this TV print dress from Lindy Bop. The print is just totally fabulous and the shape and style gets a rave review from me. It all looks lovely set against the dreamy mint colour and the black detailing contrasts fabulously. I think the chances of me not buying this dress are pretty remote.

Sticking with Lindy Bop, who you might say have switched things up a gear, we have this wheely rather lovely red and blue bicycle print number! Who doesn’t love a flattering v-neck eh? and that wide flared skirt is the stuff of my dreams!

Aristocat Dress £69.80 from Miss Patina
Aristocat Dress £69.80 from Miss Patina

If you can look past the beret and the camera (I need both stat) you will see that this super pretty dress from Miss Patina is covered in instrument playing cats. INSTRUMENT PLAYING CATS! CATS PLAYING INSTRUMENTS! There’s one tinkering the ivories, one appears to be quite the competent cellist and obviously I am all about that tabby playing the accordion. Best print ever? Adorable.

Leona £49.99 by Voodoo Vixen
Leona £49.99 by Voodoo Vixen

But then again how incredible is this 50’s diner inspired frock from Voodoo Vixen? There’s a lot going on and it’s all so much fun! Just look at those jiving couples! They are simply having the best time ever and the jukeboxes, musical notes and, errrm, burgers all help to create quite the spectacular (and super colourful) print.

Elsie in Mustard Rabbits £129 from Poppy
Elsie in Mustard Rabbits £129 from Poppy

I’ll stop rabbiting on in a minute but first I have to tell you how hopping mad I am about this bunny print dress from Poppy England! As well as being covered in adorable white rabbits, this dress is in such a fabulous shade of mustard AND it has a massive bow! Tripple win!

Blue Winter Trees £75 from Emily and Fin
Blue Winter Trees £75 from Emily and Fin

I almost didn’t see the dress for the trees! The colours of this Emily and Fin dress are just stunning and make me long for wintery days so that I can stomp around the woods in it whilst sporting my big girl boots and woolly tights. I’m also quite obsessed with those sleeves! Dreamy.

Lace and Pleat Detail Mini Dress £48 from ASOS
Lace and Pleat Detail Mini Dress £48 from ASOS

I really don’t know when and where I can get away with wearing this chiffon ASOS dress but by golly I would like to find an occasion. Obviously the colour is to die for but there’s also so much beautiful lace detailing in those sheer sections! Oh to be brave enough…

Festival Sequin Dazzle Shift Dress £48 from ASOS
Festival Sequin Dazzle Shift Dress £48 from ASOS

Last but not least is this little corker from ASOS! I actually bought this dress back in July as a last minute ‘I don’t know what to wear on my birthday’ panic buy. It turned out to be an excellent decision as, despite not being my usual fit and flare kinda style, I’ve received no end of compliments each time I have worn it. It is possibly the most sparkly dress on the planet so if you like the idea of being a human disco ball, this is the dress for you.

Mr and Mrs Clement, Clock Barn, Hampshire.

Love is certainly in the air this year, with lots of wonderful weddings to attend before my own in September! Last weekend, the OH and I packed our darling Clementine off to the local cattery, donned our Sunday best and drove to Hampshire to watch some of our oldest friends (and Fantasy Football professionals) tie the knot. After the decade they have spent together, it really was quite the occasion. It was also a blooming lovely way to catch up with several old friends who had traveled from far and wide to be there, and who we both miss immensely. I thought I would share some of the photographs that I took on the day to celebrate the very happy occasion. Congratulations Jen and Sean, it was a beautiful wedding and I feel privileged to have shared the day with you!

The wedding was held at the historic Clock Barn in Whitchurch, surrounded by glorious countryside as far as the eye can see. I took advantage of the green space under the thatched clock tower during mingling time to take a couple of outfit photos. I must admit I was slightly more self conscious than usual, after being spotted by several confused wedding guests. I think they were rather curious as to why I was taking so many photographs of my shoes, but then again, they are fabulous shoes! However fabulous, they didn’t last long once the Cèilidh band started and I danced the night away!

Kew the new Poppy collection

If you are a regular reader of our blog you will know how much we love Poppy. So much so that dresses from the Budgie Collection even feature on our blog business cards! They are so pretty, there is really nothing fowl about them!  Poppy are really spoiling us this season, as they have not only released the Budgie Collection, but also the insanely gorgeous Kew Gardens Collection. Inspired by a day trip to Kew Gardens, the fun floral prints are so good that we may need to call the garden police for some lawn and order. They are definitely our favourite designs since the Hardware Collection.

During our photoshoot with the lovely Poppy team for the seriously cool Snowstorm Collection, we were very lucky ladies indeed and posed for a few photographs in these four glorious pieces before they were even released! Thanks Poppy! Above Victoria wears the Iris Navy Budgie dress and Jo wears the Mabel White Budgie dress. Below, Victoria wears the Freda Orchard White, and Jo wears Freda Kew Gardens, whilst we try our hardest to look Kew(t).

London Fashion Week AW15: Day Two

#LFW: Day 2 Street Style | Twinning Pastels | She and Hem | 2015
Photo by Celine Gaille for Runway Manhattan

We started off Day 2 of LFW with a trip to the Orla Kiely showcase (which we have written a post about here!). After that, we had some time to kill between shows, so we decided to go and check out the ever fabulous Somerset House. Pretty standard London Fashion Week activities I’m sure you will agree. What we are not so accustomed to is how we traveled there… in a stretch hummer! The lovely Kristabel from I Want You To Know captured this in her awesome Fashion Week Vlog. Be warned, the vlog does feature me (Victoria) getting a little over excited and doing what the kids are now calling #hummerdance.

I wore the Square Print Pleat Skirt Dress from The Whitepepper with probably the most worn item in my wardrobe ever, my yellow Ingrid Coat from Boden* (now in the sale!). I accessorised with fun spotty tights from UK Tights*, white ASOS Strike Heels and a yellow Westminster bag from Boden*. Jo wore a gorgeous Needle and Thread tulle skirt from ASOS, with a vintage blue jacket from Heartfelt Vintage and floral Emilie top from Boden*. Her Alice Heels are also from Boden and that glorious pink bag is Kate Spade.

Our jazzy outfits proved to be quite the hit on the cobbles, and we ended up popping up all over the place. Some of our favourite features we saw over the weekend were Yahoo’s best street style, ASOS Fashion Finder, STYLELDN and Boden Diaries. We had such a blast that we often struggled to pull our best ‘we are very serious about fashion’ faces.

We had quite a busy schedule that afternoon, but our favourite show was the couture collection from Hellavagirl. The show was a kaleidoscopic dream! Vibrant, dramatic and seriously sparkly. Just look at those incredible giant sequin bow headbands!

Having been up since 7am and in need of a pick me up, we made use of our central location and decided to head back to base for a quick G&T and get changed into our chirpy Poppy frocks before heading out to our evening shows. Lady Gaga would be proud! I wore the Iris Navy Budgie Dress and Jo wore the Mable White Budgie Dress. Keep your eyes peeled and your beaks sharpened for a new Poppy post next week.

A She and Hem Storybook

A She and Hem Storybook | Poppy EnglandA She and Hem Storybook | Poppy England

Since taking the leap from avid blog readers, to bonny bona fide bloggers, we have been fortunate enough to be offered some wonderful opportunities that neither of us would ever previously have dreamed of. Each time an amazing email arrives in our inbox or when we receive an extra special tweet, we have to pinch ourselves that individuals and brands we have loved and coveted, often for much of our adult lives, enjoy our blog and value the time and effort we put in to making sure each post is special. There are the hours spent on Thesaurus.com trying to expand explicate our vocabularies lexicon, the sifting through the 99% of blog photos where our eyes are shut, flies are undone or we just look too awkward. Not to mention the cost of the constant stream of make up it takes to make us look half decent. Blogging can be time consuming and often a bit of a challenge, but we blooming love it. We get to work on our hobby on a daily basis! Quite honestly, even in the short space of time since we launched in 2013, She and Hem has been life changing.

One of our most magical blogging days so far came in the form of the most fun we have ever had a photoshoot with Poppy. A brand we had featured time and time (and time) again before we had met, as we both absolutely adore every charming storybook inspired piece they design. Sometimes it’s OK to fangirl. Want to know a secret? Of course you do! Well, we’ve seen their new collection, and much like the Snowstorm collection featured here, it is all magnificent!

Thank you to Bryony and everyone at Poppy for being so awesome and creating some of our favourite ever photos. You rock!

Down tools, it’s Poppy time!

She and Hem | Poppy

A couple of months ago we received a very exciting invitation from one of our favourite brands, Poppy, inviting us to London for a day of frolicking about in front of the camera whilst wearing a selection of their frocks! Errr, who could refuse that? We are both longtime Poppy fans thanks to their winning combination of adorable storybook inspired prints on big swooshy dresses so this was a bit of a dream come true for us! The only snag was, and this may come as a massive shock, but the two of us aren’t models (shut the front door) but we decided to throw our inhibitions out of the window, channeled our inner Cara and Karlie and set to work.

And, as you can see, setting to work was exactly what was required as we successfully (we hope) negotiated all manner of props, real or otherwise, whilst wearing the glorious Hardware Store dress! It was so much fun and we loved being able to embrace the playfulness of the print, which is covered in wonderful illustrations including saws, brushes, pans and screwdrivers! It sure wasn’t hardware-ing these!

Aside from helping us to quite literally brush up on our modelling skills, we both had such a surreal and fantastic time with the whole Poppy team! They were beyond lovely and made us both feel so at ease during what could have been quite an awkward experience. They were so encouraging and supportive as we faffed about in front of the camera and we are so thrilled with the results! It was also fantastic to meet the super talented Bryony who is the lady behind all of the Poppy adventures! She has even added some incredible illustrations to our photos which we love so much! We think she’s totally hit the nail on the head.

How amazing is that tree?! Incredible.

The good news is that if you love the Hardware print as much as we do, Poppy are currently having a sale! The Hardware Store dress is going to be reduced for three whole days so screw whatever else it is you have to do and get wrenching that cash from your purse!

Look out for a special snowy Poppy post coming soon……
