Have you been looking for some fabulous (yet affordable!) vintage pieces to jazz up your wardrobe, without a moth ball in sight? Well, look no further dear, stylish reader! Let us introduce you to the wonderful Thirty 8 Birds over at ASOS Marketplace. You are most welcome.

Considering I (Victoria) am completely obsessed with ASOS, I’m quite embarrassed that it has taken me this long to seriously explore ASOS Marketplace. Now that I have, I’m completely hooked. With 800 boutiques selling new and vintage items from around the world, I will never have to leave the house to go shopping again. Hopefully Jo will agree my proposal to rename the blog She and Hermit.

Jo wore white vintage 90’s dungarees with black polka-dots, black tights from UK Tights and a mustard top from Marks and Spencer. She accessorised with flat black boots from Topshop, heart sunglasses from Moschino via TK Maxx and one of the best novelty bags I’ve ever seen (and I’m not just saying that because I bought it for her…) from Next, which is also available here. In true She and Hem style, we decided to go a little matchy matchy, so I wore monochrome gingham dungarees, which are still available here, with black tights from UK Tights. My white chunky heels were an awesome ASOS bargain and my coordinating polka-dot sunglasses are from Primark.

On the short walk home from the shoot we found the perfect place to sit, have a quick catch up, throw blossom at each other and think of the perfect quote for the Tombola’s True Friendship feature, and here is what we came up with!

Hold on tights

Hold on tights

I don’t know about you but we are desperately trying to combat our January blues!  We are both back at work after a little Christmas break and it has proved very difficult to adjust to the routine of it all. Earlier in the week, we decided to go for a little ‘congrats on spending more than 4 hours out of your pyjamas’ pick-me-up drink in Clifton and managed to coincide our trip with the most beautiful sunset! Ah, January. I guess you’re not so bad after all.

Hold on tights Hold on tightsHold on tightsHold on tights

M&S very kindly sent us some tights to try out which, as you might have guessed, we are expertly modelling above. I (Jo) plumped for some patterned grey tights from their Best of British range which I have been very impressed with! They fit nicely (no ballet jumps necessary) and I have been quite rough with them but they show no sign of snagging just yet! In contrast, Victoria went for some Luxe Warm Toes Tights* which, although keeping her toes toasty, did actually ladder on the first wear. Oh tights, why do you do this to us?

Hold on tightsHold on tightsHold on tightsHold on tights

I also took the opportunity to wear possibly my favourite sale purchase of all time, the Boden squirrel dress of wonder. It’s so perfect that it hurts my feelings that I can’t just wear it everyday. I teamed it with new Office boots (thanks Mum!), white Topshop socks, a brown Primark belt and my pink Boden* coat. Victoria broke out her disco ball style brogues from New Look at ASOS, her incredible red collared dress from Primark (a recent purchase, Primarni fans), a vintage yellow bag from Clifton based Bees & Graves and her stripy Boden* coat.

We accessorised our outfits with a massive bridge.

Jump for Joy on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is THE night to get seriously sparkly. Whether you are planning a big night throwing shapes to Taylor Swift or a night in with friends with hot dogs and the Hootenanny, it is perfectly acceptable to go all out fancy! Sequins, sheer and sparkles, we just can’t get enough! When the clock strikes twelve, we want to be the girls reflecting off of the glitter ball.

Not only does this post feature balloons, bunting and bubbles but also our perfect New Year’s Eve party frocks. Victoria choose the zingy neon pink metallic Cyrus dress* and Jo picked the gorgeous fit and flare style Prova Heart dress*, both from Louche at Joy. Joyous! Victoria’s white tights are from UK Tights*, worn with gold heels from Office and a mighty mouse clutch from Primark. Jo’s glimmering gold glitter tights are from Topshop, worn with a black and gold cardigan from Fever*, gold heels from Dune and an exceptionally photogenic camera bag from Accessorize.

Happy New Year!

A big thank you to Cox and Baloney for letting us take over their snug for our early celebrations.

Don’t drop your phone in the Bath….

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

What happens when you challenge two bloggers to have a swell day out on a £100 budget? They have a day full of macaroons, mulled wine and markets of course!

We recently accepted a challenge set by Huawei, who are celebrating the launch of the Ascend Y550 smartphone, to show what we consider to be an excellent day out in the UK. We both quickly agreed that a day trip to Bath would be just the ticket! Bath is one of our favourite places in the South West, especially at Christmas time when the city comes alive thanks to the sights and smells of the Bath Christmas Markets. Bath is truly buzzing, but this isn’t just due to the markets, oh no, there is so much more to see…

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We started the day the only way we know how, coffee and cake (and smashed avocado on toast, obvs). Having only previously been to the recently opened Colonna and Hunter for a cheeky 1/3, we decided to pay them an early morning visit as we had heard wonderful things about their food. We planned our day over a couple of flat whites and, as you can see, with all that caffeine our ‘To Do’ list got a little bit ambitious! Although, apart from the cat cuddling, I think we managed to tick everything off! We apologise to all of the cats of Bath that didn’t get cuddles that day…our bad. We then went for a little stroll around the Royal Crescent to pick out our future estates and then, after at least 12 minutes of exercise, we were swiftly back into the other Colonna, Colonna and Small’s, for more caffeine. It’s a hard life.

One of the highlights of our bonza Bath day was the wonderful Bath Artisan Market, where we finally had chance to meet Amy Laws (there’s only one, after all), a lovely and super talented lady whose dresses we often feature on She and Hem! They are so blooming good! Unfortunately it was the last market of the year but, never fear, they start again in February and we would totally recommend that you pop along if you are ever browsing in Bath. We’ll be dreaming of those mincepie macaroons from Marilyn’s for a very long time to come (thankfully we bought quite a few to keep us going!) and Oscar the cat by Ben Rothery is now at the very top of our Christmas lists (see, we did cuddle a cat after all!). It was then time for a delicious roast and a mulled cider at the Bath Brew House before heading off in search of more festive frivolity!

We rounded off our day with a look around the lovely Bath Christmas Market, which had quietened down after a busy day of trading. Bath is such a picturesque city anyway but exploring the 170(ish, apparently) wooden chalets selling everything from local cheeses to wooden ties is a charming experience and, with a mulled wine in hand, a lovely way to spend a crisp December evening. We left laiden with goodies from Speckled Wood, My Bear Hands and some yummy blackcurrant rum liqueur from Friary Liqueurs. A merry Christmas indeed!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

Do you think you could have a better time than we did for £100? I know it’s QUITE the ask but the very kind people at Huawei are feeling the Christmas spirit (or perhaps have just been drinking them) as they would like to offer one of you the chance to win your own super stylish Ascend Y550 4G smartphone and £100 if you share your itinerary in the comments below! Good luck everyone!

Bangers and Fash

December has finally arrived and with it the perfect excuse to dress up all fancy every day of the week! Christmas time is party time afterall! Pass us a mince pie and some mulled wine, will you?

We do love a reason to glam up and decided to break out our new festive dresses from the Yumi partywear collection* yesterday for a vintage filled day of fun at the Heartfelt Vintage shop in Bristol. After being completely transformed by Able Mabel who did an incredible job on our hair and Evie Smith who truly made us look the part, we felt ready to hit the dance floor!

Jo: I layered my beautiful silver Floral Prom Dress* over a super sparkly sequin top from New Look. I thought it added some extra pizzazz (you can never have too much pizzazz) and as I don’t like things to be too low cut, it protected my modesty. I added a black belt from ASOS, white tights from Topshop and some super sparkly high heels from Primark.

She and Hem | Bangers and Fash | YumiShe and Hem | Bangers and Fash | Yumi

Victoria: My sleeveless Wallpaper Print Dress* is party perfect! I’m not usually a big fan of red dresses, but I was drawn to the shirt collar and easy to wear shape. I teamed it with black striped tights from Marks and Spencer, silver brogues from Next and a gorgeous black vintage bag from Heartfelt Vintage in Bristol.

In the evening we went to the fireworks which were put on to celebrate 150 years of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Don’t they look incredible?! I know we’ve said it before but we sure do love Bristol.

We’ll be posting more about our day at Heartfelt later in the week!

Fever London #STYLEMYNIGHT

She and Hem | Fever #STYLEMYNIGHT

It’s beginning to look a lot like late November Christmas which means I am beginning to stock up on as many gold sparkly things that I can lay my glittery mitts on! (Note to self: buy glittery mitts) After all, this is the season to wear sequins and I for one am all for a bit of bling! I had already begun digging out my seasonal wears when the lovely folk at Fever London invited me (and Victoria too but unfortunately you only get to look at my festive mug as she has fled the country) to take part in their #STYLEMYNIGHT challenge to create the perfect evening look from their occasion collection.

As a fan of Fever London’s vintage style, I knew picking a dress was going to be easy! I wasn’t wrong and as soon as I saw the Barberella Prom Dress* I was in love! It’s such a fun piece and the beautiful gold and blue circular pattern is a shimmery triumph! I decided to embrace the ice cool palette and teamed it with white tights from ASOS, gold glittery heels from Dune, a gold belt from Primark, my trusty Cara Camera bag from Accessorize and a tinsel bow headband from ASOS. I was sort of aiming for an Alice in Wonderland does NYE vibe!

One of the biggest things I struggle with when putting together occasion worthy outfits is what to do about keeping warm! I saw that Fever London had a great range of party appropriate cover-ups and decided on a Ursa Sparkly Cardigan* to complement my already quite glitzy outfit! I am so pleased with it and know it will be jazzing up my outfits from now on!

She and Hem | Fever #STYLEMYNIGHTShe and Hem | Fever #STYLEMYNIGHT

I completed my look with my gorgeous Eliza Coat from Boden* which will definitely keep me nice and warm when I am inevitably waiting for a taxi home. I think the pink looks lovely against the blue and gold tones of the dress.

Head over to the Fever London Facebook page where you can check out all the blogger looks from the #STYLEMYNIGHT challenge and vote for your favourite (*cough*). But what’s in it for ME I hear you cry! Well, the answer is potentially £200 worth of Fever London vouchers which one lucky voter will win! Good luck!

Studio Ghibli Forever: Build A Bento Box

Studio Ghibli Forever: Build A Bento Box | She and Hem | Bristol

Are those chopsticks in your pocket or are you just happy sashimi?

Last month we managed to snap up the last two tickets to an awesome event run by one of our favourite places in Bristol, The Watershed. There are always good vibes and interesting, fun activities going on there, but their ‘Studio Ghibli Forever’ season was particularly eye catching, a month long celebration of the legendary Japanese animation studio, featuring screenings, workshops and all manner of unique events inspired by Mr Miyazaki’s colourful, captivating back catalogue. It was the ‘Build Your Own Bento Box’ that was most alluring to us, as huge fans of both the Studio’s beautiful films and all Japanese food ever. Although neither of us have a natural flair for hands-on practical activities, we enjoyed learning about the culture of Japanese food and the history behind the Bento Box whilst sipping on some green tea. We certainly excelled at tasting all of the ingredients. Just look how pleased we were with our finished tasty boxes!

After some excellent instruction from special guest chef Kiyoko from Your Sushi, we reached the point of nori-turn and it was our time to make some delicious edible art. It was roe much fun! We were pleasantly surprised with our creations and as we got to keep the bento boxes, we’ll definitely be trying to recreate the fun at home. Fish us luck!

Hem and Away: Gin Bop

Hem and Away : Gin Bop

Last Friday, after hanging out with some giant perfume bottles, we made our way to the real reason we were in London….Gin Bop! As big lovers of both gin AND bopping, we knew this going to be our sort of time! Held at the Rivington Grill in Greenwich, Gin Bop was a ticketed event which granted you access to an evening of live jazz, gin based games (!), a hog roast and, of course, gin!

Hem and Away : Gin BopHem and Away : Gin BopHem and Away : Gin BopHem and Away : Gin Bop

Experts from Hendrick’s, Beefeater, Tanqueray, Langley’s No.8 and Bombay Sapphire were all on hand to whisk up delicious cocktails from their respective bars (or buses, in Hendrick’s case). Being Hendrick’s girls at heart, we headed straight for their station which was parked up alongside the hog roast. A dream combination if ever there was one. Their delightful bartender served us two yummy Flora Doras in teacups which we then took onto their bus with us. Sadly the bus was candle lit and our already struggling camera simply couldn’t cope so you’ll have to take our word for it that it was pretty darn great.

We then headed upstairs to Tanqueray who had a lovely sofa filled area all to themselves! We had a good chat with their bar men about the cocktails on offer (all the stations had a menu of three) but, in all honesty, we knew the moment we saw the slush machine what was going to happen! Behold, the Tanqueray Frozen Aviation, the most grown up slush puppie you will ever see. It was delicious!

Hem and Away : Gin BopHem and Away : Gin BopHem and Away : Gin Bop Hem and Away : Gin BopHem and Away : Gin Bop

We were already feeling a little bit squiffy after two cocktails but we persevered onwards to both Langley’s and Beefeater (Soz Bombay Sapphire). Unfortunately, neither of us were big fans of our Langley’s cocktails (a No.8 Fizz and a New Orleans G&T) so we decided to leave them (I know!) and instead headed to Beefeater who lured us in with talk of Earl Grey. Thankfully this cocktail more than made up for the disappointment of our previous drink and we ended the night on a high…and a hic.

A big thanks to Hendrick’s for the tickets! You delicious people.

Hem and Away: Marc Jacobs Tweet Shop

She and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet Shop

Last Friday, whilst sitting on the train from Bristol to London, we came across #MJDaisyChain on Twitter. Never ones to ignore a good hashtag, we were quick to discover that our trip to the capital had fortuitously coincided with a Marc Jacobs Pop-Up event in Covent Garden!

She and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet ShopShe and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet Shop

The Tweet Shop was promoting the Marc Jacobs Daisy fragrance, which just happens to be a favourite of ours (and of everyone else, really) and worked using a cashless system where customers were instead encouraged to exchange tweets for products! See how Victoria cleverly demonstrates tweeting.

She and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet ShopShe and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet ShopShe and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet ShopShe and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet ShopShe and Hem | Marc Jacobs Tweet Shop

We began by tweeting in exchange for a sample of perfume and both plumped for the newest Daisy scent, Daisy Dream. We decided that if it smelt as pretty as it looked, we were onto a winner! We then began checking out all of the other products on offer which included keyrings, manicures or a man with an excellent beard serving you hot drinks and macarons! Delightful. There was also a very exciting wall of goodies! If you were really lucky your tweet could win you sunglasses, a handbag or even a puppy perfume!

Rather marvelously, thanks to the lovely Amelia (xameliax), we were really lucky and were both able to upgrade our sample sizes of Daisy Dream for 50ml bottles! We celebrated by playing with the giant perfume bottle props that were so heavy our arms still ached the next day!

Harbourside Hell Bunny

She and Hem | Tiger Milly | Hell Bunny Last Saturday, as it was a gloriously sunny morning in Bristol, we decided to make the most of it and put on our glad rags for a stroll around the beautiful harbourside. Charmingly, by the time we finally finished getting ready made it into town the sun had beat a hasty retreat and we were left with some seriously gloomy cloud. We didn’t let that stop us though. In your face, weather.

As you can see, we were dressed pretty cheerfully in these gorgeous frocks from Tiger Milly. Nothing makes us happier than a nice twirly number and Tiger Milly is a veritable treasure trove of fabulous vintage inspired pieces, stocking a great selection of brands who love their flirty fifites fashion just as much as we do. These particular two are from the wonderful Hell Bunny.

We had such a great time putting these looks together with belts, bags and shoes flying everywhere in the process. Victoria ended up teaming her lovely Pink and Mint Hell Bunny Plaid Summer Dress* with a grey belt from The Bristol Vintage Fair, gorgeous coral shoes from Primark, pink heart shaped sunglasses from Amazon and her highly coveted macaroon print clutch which is also a Primark bargain. I accessoried my turquoise Hell Bunny May Day Floral Dress* with a fruity lemon clutch from New Look*, a black belt from ASOS (the dress does come with a matching belt but I wanted to be matchy matchy with my shoes), black shoes from the M&S sale and sunglasses from Topshop.

It has to be said, we felt pretty darn fantastic strolling around in these outfits! They are perfect summer dresses and really fun, yet easy, to wear.
