Double Thumbs Dresses #89

Hello hello! Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses, our roundup of the frocks we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted double thumbs seal of approval! We both had our babies over Christmas and New Year (check out our Instagram for lots of baby spam) so the blog has had to take a bit of a back seat while we both spend time with our beautiful newborns and learn how to function on very little sleep! I am just about coming out of the foggy mess that was the first few weeks and, as my baby has decided to take a nap, I thought I’d dust off the old keyboard and find some dreamy dresses!

Stripe Belted Dress £55 from Yumi
Stripe Belted Dress £55 from Yumi

First up, we are absolutely loving the new Yumi collection! It’s full of beautiful bold colours, fun prints and some excellent frocks! Our pick of the bunch is this Kate Spade-esque striped beauty. It’s a clear winner and, thanks to those lovely buttons, breast feeding friendly too! Hoorah.

Posy Shirt Dress £90 from Boden
Posy Shirt Dress £90 from Boden

We always love seeing what Boden have up their highly fashionable sleeve and their latest offerings are, as is to be expected, rather wonderful indeed. We are digging this retro long-sleeved shirt dress (BF friendly once again!) that has a super flattering fit and flare shape. It is however the fab botanical garden print that makes this one a knock out! If pink isn’t your thang it’s also available in navy.

Flower Power Pleats Dress £95 from & Other Stories
Flower Power Pleats Dress £95 from & Other Stories

Oh my God it’s like a magical unicorn threw up on a dress! This & Other Stories number is simply heavenly. It has everything! Pleats! Frills! Buttons! Colours! Sleeves! Flares! As the kids say, I die.

Ponte Fluted Dress £22 from Tu Clothing at Sainsburys
Ponte Fluted Dress £22 from Tu Clothing at Sainsburys

How dreamy is this dress by TU? I always find Sainsbury’s have incredible clothes but sadly for me (not so much for my bank balance) my local store doesn’t stock fashion. It’s a good job they sell some of their pieces online now! Anyhoo, I’m totally obsessed with those fluted sleeves!

Fast Cars Pleated Dress £75 from Cath Kidston

Dino Sleeveless Dress £60 from Cath Kidston
Dino Sleeveless Dress £60 from Cath Kidston

Argh my novelty print klaxon cannot cope with these new Cath Kidston dresses! I also cannot cope with the fact that I won’t be able to wear either until I’ve stopped breast feeding. I NEED BUTTONS, PEOPLE. The fast car print is excellent fun and I actually really love the beige colour it’s set against. This new CK shape with sleeves and pleats is also a winner and one I hope we see more of in the future. The roarsome dinosaurs are also a sure fire hit especially as they appear on the classic CK sleeveless shape. I am all about those hidden pockets.

Poppy Print Waisted Dress £46 from Warehouse
Poppy Print Waisted Dress £46 from Warehouse

As my new baby (have I mentioned that I had a baby?) is called Poppy, it’s only right that my wardrobe should be full of them. Weirdly, the high street seems to know about this as poppy prints seem to be popping up left right and center. This Warehouse number is my current fave, mostly due to that stretchy waistband. I am all about a bit of stretch right now.

Floral Print Ruffle Trim Dress £62 from Next

Good ol’ Next have got some lovely pieces in at the moment. There’s just so much detail on this stunning floral print and the high neck looks so fab with the ruffles and long sleeves. Dreamy.

Ruffle Striped Shift Dress £45 from M&S

Speaking of ruffles, I am also a big fan of this nautical but nice striped shift dress from M&S. It’s such a great silhouette and, praise be, there are buttons!

Frilled dress £25.99 from Pull and Bear
Frilled dress £25.99 from Pull and Bear

Last but not least, it would be remiss to be this close to Valentine’s Day and not feature a red dress! This frilled frock from Pull and Bear ticks all the V Day boxes and it’s a bit of a bargain too. You’re welcome.

Hem and Away: Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia.

Hem and Away | Sidi Bou Said | Tunisia | She and Hem

Last month during a family holiday to Tunisia I took full advantage of the incredibly cheap public transport and headed north from Tunis by taxi, coach and train, to sample the blue and white (and yellow!) delights of Sidi Bou Said. With it’s picturesque cobbled streets dotted with delicately decorated doors and clusters of delicious evergreen jasmine flowers, it was certainly a highlight of the holiday.

Sidi Bou Said is a dreamy labyrinth of steep pathways leading to magnificent views of the bay reaching out to the Med, with a wealth of pretty cafes serving traditional Arabic coffee, tempting mint tea and sticky sweet baklava. Even though we were battling against near 40 degree heat, the scenery was reward enough for climbing the hefty hill below. Half way up I discovered the most enchanting yellow door (see above). This beauty definitely won a place in my Top 5 Tunisian Doors of 2014, which also includes this gem. Like the decor? Stay tuned for more delightful Tunisian architecture on the blog soon. It won’t be too much to handle, I promise!

New Look Summer

She and Hem | New Look Summer

A little while ago we were very kindly asked if we would like to choose a summer outfit each from New Look’s summer range and, having both decided recently that we would like to step out of our usual comfort zone of twirly dresses, this seemed like the perfect opportunity for us to embrace some shorts! So last week, in between stuffing ourselves silly with breakfast at the Anthropologie Bath launch and heading up to Manchester, we found ourselves strolling around in our very best summer attire. As the sun had even made an appearance for the occasion, I decided to take V to one of my favourite teenage haunts, the picture perfect Henrietta Park for some photos!

She and Hem | New Look SummerShe and Hem | New Look SummerShe and Hem | New Look SummerWhen choosing our outfits, Victoria headed straight for New Look’s handy co-ords section (I wish more online shops had cottoned on to this) and selected her gorgeous red floral top and shorts set. It looked absolutely stunning on and she accessorised it perfectly with her Primark shell bag, sparkly George sunglasses* and jazzy cobalt blue Office sandals from House of Fraser*. She looked so bright and cheery in the vibrant colours and we both agree that the shorts especially are going to making many an appearance…if the sun holds up his end of the deal too.

She and Hem | New Look SummerShe and Hem | New Look Summer

She and Hem | New Look SummerI am always instantly drawn to anything white and crochet so these shorts went straight into my basket. If I was at a festival or on holiday I would be happy to rock them without tights but I don’t think Bath is quite ready for my jelly – they really are short! I do like them with tights though and my George ones are even ‘heat controlled’ so I didn’t get too hot! It took me a while to figure out what to team with them and ended up plumping for this gingham shirt top, which I now LOVE. It has such a cute tie detail at the bottom and I know I am going to be wearing it all summer long. I accessoried with Topshop brogues, a white Zatchel, a Pull & Bear cardigan and my fail safe Amazon heart sunglasses.

She and Home: Autumnal Bath

Bath12Today I (Jo) ventured the very short distance to Bath for a wonderful day with my BFF Fiona. I’ve known Fi since we were at school here in 1996(!), a simpler time when the Spice Girls and Britney Spears were only just beginning and where my Kickers were my most coveted possession. Now that we are all grown up (insert hysterical tears), it isn’t often that we get to mooch around the beautiful city in which we grew up. So when we do get one of these hallowed days, we sure do make the most of it!

DSC_0003 DSC_0005We started by visiting the Bath Spa, Britain’s only natural thermal spa dontachknow. It’s SO relaxing and I have to admit that it has become a bit of a favourite pastime among my circle of girlfriends, albeit one we can’t afford to do that often! It’s the rooftop pool with its beautiful view over the Bath skyline that does it. It’s just such a treat to catch up with your friends whilst surrounded by hot water, bubbles and a spectacular view. Sadly they don’t allow cameras but this should give you the gist. Pretty great huh?

After three hours of pure unadulterated relaxation, we began a little exploration of Bath’s many cobbled side streets. It was lovely to be reacquainted with old haunts, discussing new additions and reminiscing about things that have long since disappeared. Continue reading She and Home: Autumnal Bath
