Double Thumbs Dresses #64

Hello dress fans! It’s time for the first Double Thumbs Dresses of 2016! Partaaay! So, without further ado, I present to you the top frocks that we consider worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval.

Tea and Macarons Dress £75 from Yumi
Tea and Macaroons Dress £75 from Yumi

Oh HELLO! We always love a bit of Yumi here at She and Hem but they have truly excelled themselves with their latest offerings. This Tea and Macaroons dress is the stuff my dress dreams are made of. With its beautiful pastel colouring, delightful twirly fit and print that features teacups piled high with macaroons, it really is a wonder frock. It does also appear to come with straps, if that’s a deal breaker for you. This appears to be a House of Fraser exclusive (fancy) which is great news for me as I’ve been sitting on some HoF vouchers for about 8 months. Happy New Year, me.

Cactus Print Skater Dress £65 from Yumi
Cactus Print Skater Dress £65 from Yumi

And so the Yumi fun continues with this super cute cactus print! This skater dress is so cheery thanks to all those fab colours. I’m pretty potty about those pots!

The Potteries Dress £60 from There's Only One Amy Laws
The Potteries Dress £60 from There’s Only One Amy Laws

Want more pots? Your Potteries luck is in! Another of our favourites, There’s Only One Amy Laws, has just added this beautiful Potteries skyline print dress to her website – defo one for all those die hard Stoke-On-Trent fans out there! I adore the hourglass shape and there’s just so much lovely detail to this dress. Even the smoke is pretty!

Patterned dress in Yellow £19.99 from H&M
Patterned dress in Yellow £19.99 from H&M

I am such a fan of this H&M dress (and no, not just because I’d get change out of a twenty pound note – although that does help!). I love the combination of colours and the a-line shape looks lovely with those long sleeves.

Cobalt Ladybird Print Dress £50 from Next
Cobalt Ladybird Print Dress £50 from Next

I feel like this Next frock might be my perfect Winter work dress! Cute but subtle novelty print? Check. Super long sleeves to keep me warm? Check. Colour dark enough to disguise any tea I may or may not throw down myself? Check. The adorable pleating is an added bonus!

Botanical Floral Shift Dress £45 from Warehouse
Botanical Floral Shift Dress £45 from Warehouse

I keep spotting people wearing this divine floral print, which is no surprise really when you consider Warehouse have whacked it on three tops and two dresses. They obviously like it as much as I do! Personally I love the shift dress but the midi appears to be the more popular choice! But whatever tickles your pickle, it’s all about those glorious blooms!

Chaney Woodland Jersey Dress £45 by Louche at Joy
Chaney Woodland Jersey Dress £45 by Louche at Joy

Yay! It’s The Animals of Farthing Wood in dress form! It’s woodland creatures a-go-go in the brilliant dress by Louche! There are squirrels, deer and racoons to admire, as well as what looks to be Little Red Riding Hood? Amazing.

Backless Sheer Sleeve Tulle Embellished Maxi Dress £185 from Needle and Thread at ASOS
Backless Sheer Sleeve Tulle Embellished Maxi Dress £185 from Needle and Thread at ASOS

Last but not least is this simply stunning dress by the tully scrumptious Needle and Thread. I mean, it’s ridiculous. Just look at all that tulle! And the embroidered detailing is to die for! If you’re getting married anytime soon, just wear this and spend the money you’ve successfully saved on cake. Cake forever.

River Fish Cotton Dress with Shirred Waist £60 by Cath Kidston
River Fish Cotton Dress with Shirred Waist £60 by Cath Kidston
River Fish Mono Cotton Beach Dress £55 from Cath Kidston
River Fish Mono Cotton Beach Dress £55 from Cath Kidston

Oh my cod, things are certainly getting a bit cray cray at Cath Kidston HQ thanks to their delightful new river inspired prints! As a self-confessed CK addict, I have naturally fallen hook, line and sinker for all things underwater! I am loving the colourful fish number with its shirred waist (as seen on the cloud dress) but how beautiful does the blue and white sundress look? I think Summer 2015 is going to be the time and plaice for fishy fashion!

Honolulu Print Prom Dress £59.50 from Oliver Bonas
Honolulu Print Prom Dress £59.50 from Oliver Bonas

Surfs up! I love this fab new Hawaiian inspired prom dress from Oliver Bonas, which has a gorgeous pastel pallet and features some very lovely surfers riding the waves. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be accessoried with sunglasses, a beach and a Pina Colada. That’s what I’ll be doing anyway.

Iris Shirt Dress in Red Graphic Geo £79 from Boden
Iris Shirt Dress in Red Graphic Geo £79 from Boden

I am all about shirt dresses at the moment and this 1950’s inspired number from Boden is ticking all the rights boxes. That geo print is just retro heaven and the whole thing just looks fantastically flattering. I would happily trot into work in this first thing and then head straight out for drinks in it come 5. Living the dream…

Gretal Stripe Sundress £55 by Louche from Joy
Gretal Stripe Sundress £55 by Louche from Joy

This is possibly the most cheerful dress I’ve ever seen but, gosh darn it, who doesn’t love a bright, multi-coloured chevron dress? It also has super deep pockets so you can store extra sunglasses for your friends to borrow when they realise they can’t look directly at you. Excellent summer dress work, Louche.

How Sweet Cactus Dress in White £45 by Somedays Lovin' from Urban Outfitters
How Sweet Cactus Dress in White £45 by Somedays Lovin’ from Urban Outfitters

I didn’t know the cactus was able to look so pretty but Australian brand Somedays Lovin’ have created this super lovely print featuring a whole prickly bunch of them! I really love the laid back style of this dress and look forward to floating around in it on a hot day (did someone say something about a beach and a pina colada?).

Wild at Heart Dress £55 from There's Only One Amy Laws
Wild at Heart Dress £55 from There’s Only One Amy Laws

We always adore anything by Amy Laws and this 1950’s style floral affair is no exception! The dusky blue colour of the dress is gorgeous and who doesn’t want foxgloves growing around their hemline?

Dolores Doll Atomic Flamingo Print Dress £60 from Collectif
Dolores Doll Atomic Flamingo Print Dress £60 from Collectif

I thought the pom poms of last week were possibly going to be my Double Thumbs Dresses highlight of the year but here I find myself typing the words ‘atomic flamingo print’ and now I not so sure! This Collectif dress is brilliantly bonkers and features an array of watermelons, bannanas, pineapples and ummm ATOMIC FLAMINGOS (??!!). It might be the best thing I’ve ever seen.

Rainy Day Dress £55 from There's Only One Amy Laws
Rainy Day Dress £55 from There’s Only One Amy Laws

I always enjoy dressing to my surroundings and at the moment I am surrounded by miserable January weather. I feel this delightful number from There’s Only One Amy Laws would cheer many a grey day. If only rain really was multicoloured. Sigh.

Bark in the Park Dress £47 by Sugarhill Boutique from Thunder Egg
Bark in the Park Dress £47 by Sugarhill Boutique from Thunder Egg

You’d be barking mad not to have puppy dog eyes for this cute dress from Sugarhill Boutique at Thunder Egg. The illustrations are just lovely and will definitely have you looking more lady than tramp (sorry)!

Noah's Safari Print Tea Dress £65 from Yumi
Noah’s Safari Print Tea Dress £65 from Yumi

Grab your binoculars, we’re going on safari over at Yumi with this floaty frock. Lions and tigers and, errm, massive birds help to form this rather enjoyable print.

Floral Print Midi Dress £57.99 by Chi Chi London at House of Fraser
Floral Print Midi Dress £57.99 by Chi Chi London at House of Fraser

This Chi Chi London dress is more phrwoar-al than floral with a big bold digital print. It’s a stunning take on modern vintage from a brand I am becoming more and more obsessed with!

Dreaming of Hana Printed Prom Dress £40.41 (sale price) from Chicwish
Dreaming of Hana Printed Prom Dress £40.41 (sale price) from Chicwish

Continuing my humongous floral print of dreams theme is Chicwish who have just released this gorgeous poppy dress. It’s so glamorous! If only I had somewhere to wear it. I really need to get myself invited to more weddings.

Daria Dress £29.99 from Lindy Bop
Daria Dress £29.99 from Lindy Bop

How lovely is this Lindy Bop dress? The colours are simply gorgeous but I think it’s the super pretty scalloped neckline that makes it a true top frock.

Paris Floral Pinny Dress £48 from Topshop
Paris Floral Pinny Dress £48 from Topshop

Wahey this is one jazzy pinny! IT’S PRACTICALLY SHOUTING it’s so loud but my goodness it’s fabulous and I just love those blues against the vibrant orange. Top work, Topshop.

Girls On Film Dogtooth Check Collared Dress £45 from Dorothy Perkins
Girls On Film Dogtooth Check Collared Dress £45 from Dorothy Perkins

Last but not least is this dogtooth print from Dorothy Perkins. It really reminds me of one of Victoria’s dresses and if there’s one thing I love, it’s to be reminded of Victoria. I think it’s the delightful contrasting collar which really makes the dress stand out.

Don’t drop your phone in the Bath….

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

What happens when you challenge two bloggers to have a swell day out on a £100 budget? They have a day full of macaroons, mulled wine and markets of course!

We recently accepted a challenge set by Huawei, who are celebrating the launch of the Ascend Y550 smartphone, to show what we consider to be an excellent day out in the UK. We both quickly agreed that a day trip to Bath would be just the ticket! Bath is one of our favourite places in the South West, especially at Christmas time when the city comes alive thanks to the sights and smells of the Bath Christmas Markets. Bath is truly buzzing, but this isn’t just due to the markets, oh no, there is so much more to see…

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We started the day the only way we know how, coffee and cake (and smashed avocado on toast, obvs). Having only previously been to the recently opened Colonna and Hunter for a cheeky 1/3, we decided to pay them an early morning visit as we had heard wonderful things about their food. We planned our day over a couple of flat whites and, as you can see, with all that caffeine our ‘To Do’ list got a little bit ambitious! Although, apart from the cat cuddling, I think we managed to tick everything off! We apologise to all of the cats of Bath that didn’t get cuddles that day…our bad. We then went for a little stroll around the Royal Crescent to pick out our future estates and then, after at least 12 minutes of exercise, we were swiftly back into the other Colonna, Colonna and Small’s, for more caffeine. It’s a hard life.

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

One of the highlights of our bonza Bath day was the wonderful Bath Artisan Market, where we finally had chance to meet Amy Laws (there’s only one, after all), a lovely and super talented lady whose dresses we often feature on She and Hem! They are so blooming good! Unfortunately it was the last market of the year but, never fear, they start again in February and we would totally recommend that you pop along if you are ever browsing in Bath. We’ll be dreaming of those mincepie macaroons from Marilyn’s for a very long time to come (thankfully we bought quite a few to keep us going!) and Oscar the cat by Ben Rothery is now at the very top of our Christmas lists (see, we did cuddle a cat after all!). It was then time for a delicious roast and a mulled cider at the Bath Brew House before heading off in search of more festive frivolity!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

We rounded off our day with a look around the lovely Bath Christmas Market, which had quietened down after a busy day of trading. Bath is such a picturesque city anyway but exploring the 170(ish, apparently) wooden chalets selling everything from local cheeses to wooden ties is a charming experience and, with a mulled wine in hand, a lovely way to spend a crisp December evening. We left laiden with goodies from Speckled Wood, My Bear Hands and some yummy blackcurrant rum liqueur from Friary Liqueurs. A merry Christmas indeed!

She and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day OutShe and Hem | Huawei | Bath Day Out

Do you think you could have a better time than we did for £100? I know it’s QUITE the ask but the very kind people at Huawei are feeling the Christmas spirit (or perhaps have just been drinking them) as they would like to offer one of you the chance to win your own super stylish Ascend Y550 4G smartphone and £100 if you share your itinerary in the comments below! Good luck everyone!

Double Thumbs Dresses #46

Hello dress fans!

Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses, our selection of the top frocks on the block and, according to Rife Magazine, “the ultimate round-up of dresses to die for.” You can’t say fairer than that!

Double Thumbs Dresses | Hartland Dress in Porridge Squirrel £79
Hartland Dress in Porridge Squirrel £79 from Boden

We begin by going slightly nuts over this squirrel print dress from Boden. Oh, where to start with how perfect it is? Could it be that super flattering shape? Or the lovely long sleeves? Or perhaps it’s those front pockets? Or, just maybe, it’s all of the above plus the fact it’s COVERED IN SQUIRRELS (I mean it’s that one, obviously). Personally, I am rather partial to this ‘porridge’ colour scheme but there are two other options available, delightfully dubbed ‘navy squirrel’ and ‘faded fatigue squirrel’. I feel bad for not realising squirrels could get fatigued.

Double Thumbs Dresses | Squirrel Dress £55
Squirrel Dress £55 from There’s Only One Amy Laws

I hope you’ve, errrm, squirreled some money away as the cute critters are slowly taking over Double Thumbs! Just LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE! Amy Laws has done it again with this perfect print set against the most gorgeous full skirted emerald green frock.

Laura-May Dress £60 by Look Magazine for Little Mistress
Laura-May Dress £60 by Look Magazine for Little Mistress

Right, enough with the a-corny jokes. It’s time to get down to serious partaaay dress buisness courtesy of this little stonker from Little Mistress. Just look how super shiny it is! And the dogtooth herringbone print is a lovely touch too.

Double Thumbs Dresses | Off Shoulder Jewel Jacquard Bardot Prom Dress £85
Off Shoulder Jewel Jacquard Bardot Prom Dress £85 from ASOS

Sticking with the sparkles, how about this glitzy ASOS dress? I am still loving their off the shoulder bardot style frocks and the heavyweight jacquard material looks simply stunning. The whole look is set off by some pretty substantial looking jewel detailing, making it the *whispers* perfect Christmas party frock!

Double Thumbs Dresses | Juliette Cat Dress £90
Juliette Cat Dress £90 from People Tree at John Lewis

Meowsers tousers, I am really digging this cat print dress from People Tree! The teal colour is fab and I am really feline the size and simplicity of those sitting white kitties! Puuurfect.

Double Thumbs Dresses | Katnis £49.99
Katnis £49.99 from Voodoo Vixen

It’s raining cats and even more cats in this outrageously fun frock from Voodoo Vixen! The colour is wonderful and the black looks absolutely sublime against it! The scallop detailing on the neckline and pockets is the stuff my dress dreams are made of.

Double Thumbs Dresses | Susie Meow £49.95
Susie Meow £49.95 from Voodoo Vixen

And the Voodoo Vixen fun doesn’t stop there as they have also brought out the most perfect winter dress! Behold this vintage inspired wool frock which has the most marvelous butterfly collar. What a triumph!

Double Thumbs Dresses | Folk Bear Skater £55
Folk Bear Skater £55 from Sugarhill Boutique

Last but not least is this lovely folk bear print dress from Sugarhill Boutique. I can bear-ly contain my excitement for that super flattering square neckline! The stellar combination of those sleeves, that shape and the cuteness of the print makes this dress a bare wardrobe necessity!

Pineapple Dress £55
Pineapple Dress £55 from There’s Only One Amy Laws

Ha! You thought you’d seen the last of my pineapples but here we are again, in what I am now calling the fashion world’s ‘pineapple agenda’, with another from There’s Only One Amy Laws. But WHAT a pretty 50’s style pineapple frock this is. I love everything about it.

Pineapple Print Cami Dress £22
Pineapple Print Cami Dress £22 from River Island

Ha! You thought you’d seen the last of my pinea….yeah, it’s kind of getting a bit silly now isn’t it? I can’t help it though. I’m just drawn to the tropical. This lovely cami is from River Island.

Sunglasses Print Midi Dress £49.50
Sunglasses Print Midi Dress £49.50 from Marks and Spencer

People can tell me all they want about how Marks and Spencer have lost their way when it comes to women’s fashion. I’m not listening. I have always been an M&S girl and from where I am sitting, they are consistently brilliant. Look at this sunglasses print dress? It’s marvelous! It’s on trend! It’s under £50! I will defend them UNTIL THE END! (bit of poetry for you there). Although I’m still waiting for a Percy Pig print dress. Sort it out, guys.

Lemon Print Fit-and-Flare Dress £85
Lemon Print Fit-and-Flare Dress £85 from Banana Republic

Screw you, pineapples! There’s a massive lemon print on the block and it’s brilliant. I often overlook Banana Republic but they have got some fantastic pieces in at the moment!

Bonnie Sun Dress £66 from Weekend Doll
Bonnie Sun Dress £66 from Weekend Doll

Ah, we love a bit of Weekend Doll here at She and Hem so I was very excited to see their new collection pop up this week. This yellow puppy (!) dress, with it’s super cute print, is my favourite. It’s also got a whacking great bow on the back. Winner.

1950s Red Stripe Shirt Dress £98
1950s Red Stripe Shirt Dress £98 from 20th Century Foxy

One of my favourite ever Double Thumbs Dresses is from 20th Century Foxy, so it’s nice to see them back with this bangin’ red stripe shirt dress. It’s even got hidden pockets. Dreamy.

 Floral Print Sun Dress £10
Floral Print Sun Dress £10 from Matalan

My goodness, Matalan can be totally amazing. This perfect pastel pink floral shift dress is a tenner! A tenner!

Womens Tea Dress £16 from Peacocks
Womens Tea Dress £16 from Peacocks

Last up this week is this lovely floral tea dress from Peacocks. I love the shape and the pattern but the thing that truly seals the deal for me is that adorable Peter-Pan collar. You can’t really argue with that price-tag either.

That’s your lot!

Double Thumbs Dresses #26

Howdy dress fans! Can you believe how fast the weeks are going at the moment? I can barely keep up! In fact, I’m actually still thinking about that Lucky Cat dress from last week. But, whatever, it’s totally time to move on and take a gander at this week’s selection of dresses deemed oh-so-worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval. It’s a good job I’ve just been paid as this selection is not particularly budget friendly.

Strawberry Fields Sash Dress £65 by Great Plains

First up is this berry nice dress from Great Plains. It’s a lovely length, so perfect for wearing to work, and it ticks the very important sleeves and pockets boxes. It has a lovely big sash to nip your waist in, which is flattering but also means you can have a nice big fun bow. Woo! I’ve gone for the traditional red strawberry but if you’re a fruity renegade, it also comes in yellow.

MAE CAT PRINT FLARED DRESS IN BLACK
Mae Cat Dress in Black £85 from People Tree
Elizabeth Dress in Bow Print £78 from People Tree
Elizabeth Dress in Bow Print £78 from People Tree

People Tree have done the double this week with two fabulous dresses. I think we’ve established that I like anything with a cat on so it’s no surprise that the vintage style Mae Cat dress floats my boat. I love the colours and the fact that People Tree have nailed the evil glare cats give you when you’ve disturbed their day. It’s also a fab fit and flare shape with a tie belt and pockets.

Next up is the pretty bow print dress. I’m not usually one for predominantly black dresses but this one really appeals to me. The sleeves are simply divine and the shape is another vintage inspired affair. It looks a little Blair Waldorf to me, which is perhaps why I want it so much.

Right as rain dress £135 from Nadinoo
Right as rain dress £135 from Nadinoo

I have no idea how I stumbled across Nadinoo (I’m inclined to blame Pinterest) but oh my what a pretty label this is. I’m pretty obsessed with their about page which describes their style as whimsical and enchanting whilst each piece is designed ‘for three fictional characters Pixie, Fleur and Lula’. My favourite is this ladder print dress which has one of the most whopping great bows I’ve ever seen. Gorgeous. Continue reading Double Thumbs Dresses #26

Double Thumbs Dresses #15

Morning Hemsters,

Apologies for the slight delay in your weekly dress fix but hopefully there’s no better way to kick off your Monday than with a round up of the beautiful dresses considered to be worthy of the highly coveted She and Hem Double Thumbs seal of approval. Go grab your coffee, I’m going in.

Wild Ponies Dress £60 from Cath Kidston

Giddy up girl, Cath Kidston has brought out yet another print for us all to covet. This dress is not only completely beautiful with the stunning print but it also has a work friendly hem line, sleeves and pockets! As always with Cath, this dress disappeared off the website just as soon as it arrived but. before you despair, I’ve seen plenty in store. Wild horses couldn’t keep me away etc etc.

Vintage Rose Dress £49.95 from White Stuff

White Stuff are always a safe bet for a pretty dress but I don’t tend to associate them with more vintage inspired prints. This rose print number is just gorgeous and looks super flattering and comfortable. This fab frock  is also proving to be a pesky one to track down to purchase online but is also available at House of Fraser and John Lewis

Rockabilly Robin Dress £55 from There’s Only One Amy Laws

A cheep and cheerful little number here from the ever wonderful There’s Only One Amy Laws. The 50s shape and vibrant red colour are totally fab and once you throw in those delightful robins, you’ve got one heck of a dress on your hands.

Glitter Tunic £45.00 from Warehouse

Bonfire night is fast approaching so it’s obviously wise to invest in a nice little sparkler right about now. This glittery Warehouse number ticks all the seasonal boxes for me and could well be my new party dress! Continue reading Double Thumbs Dresses #15
