Accessories to Murder #21 Valentine’s Day Special

Hello and welcome to the 21st Accessories to Murder! Pop the fizz and celebrate, we are 21 today! Not only that, but we are focusing on all things Valentine’s Day this week AND I’ve found the perfect pair of pink heart tights! Are you ready to delve into the world of amazing cupidly good accessories? Excellent! Without further ado, here are the accessories that have made it onto this week’s She and Hem’s Most Wanted.

Accessories to Murder | She and Hem | Valentine's Day | Heart Earrings
Glitter Heart Earrings | £12.50 | Topshop

Let’s ear it for these glitter heart earrings from good ol’ Topshop. Perfect for the love of your life to gaze upon admiringly whilst whispering sweet nothings into your ear. Planning a night in this V-Day? Never fear, these beauties are cool enough to be worn all year round. J’adore Topshop!

Accessories to Murder | She and Hem | Valentine's Day | Heart Socks
Fluffy Heart Ankle Socks | £3.50 | Topshop

If you, like me, are one of the few who don’t have their ears pierced, Topshop (them again) have us covered. Hoorah! They have really put their hearts into creating these cute ankle socks. If you fall out of love with them, you can always take them to the sock exchange.

Accessories to Murder | She and Hem | Valentine's Day | Heart Watch
Red Strap Heart Dial Watch | £40.00 | Oasis

Girl, you know what time it is. It’s time to head to Oasis to crush on their new accessories, of course! Time really flies when you’ve got a watch this fancy. Just look at that heart shaped dial *swoons*. The gracious gold and ravishing red are a match made in analog heaven. Just watch out for all the compliments.

Accessories to Murder | She and Hem | Valentine's Day | Heart Jumper
Truly Madly Deeply Love Weekend Jumper | £39 | Urban Outfitters

It’s now time to honor my one true love, the weekend! This vintage washed weekend jumper from Urban Outfitters looks perfect for snuggling up on the sofa, and the gorgeous embroidery ensure that it’s totally acceptable to team it with jeans and head out to celebrate just how great the weekend is. Now, I don’t mean Canadian singer, songwriter and producer The Weeknd, although I’m reliably informed that he’s quite good too.

Accessories to Murder | She and Hem | Valentine's Day | Heart Tights
Sheer Luxe Heart Tights | £22 | American Apparel

You’ll look so perfect standing there in these American Apparel underwear heart tights!  I’ve got so many pairs of black heart tights, but I’ve never been able to find a pair with pink hearts on, so I’m pretty stoked about these gems. Eat your heart out competitors, I’ll be heading to American Apparel for all of my tights needs this season!

Accessories to Murder | She and Hem | Valentine's Day | Heart Bag
Heart Cross Body Bag | £26 | Skinnydip via Selfridges

Whilst on my long search for the dreamiest heart shaped bag, there were many strong contenders. Primark have an excellent black sparkly version, as featured on our Instagram last week, but it is Skinnydip’s heart bag that wins the coveted final place on She and Hem’s Most Wanted this week. Although this is quite plain for Skinnydip, if you want a subtle nod to Valentine’s Day without going OTT (like I probably will be), then I think this is The One.

Until next week, keep accessorizing!

Hold on tights

Hold on tights

I don’t know about you but we are desperately trying to combat our January blues!  We are both back at work after a little Christmas break and it has proved very difficult to adjust to the routine of it all. Earlier in the week, we decided to go for a little ‘congrats on spending more than 4 hours out of your pyjamas’ pick-me-up drink in Clifton and managed to coincide our trip with the most beautiful sunset! Ah, January. I guess you’re not so bad after all.

Hold on tights Hold on tightsHold on tightsHold on tights

M&S very kindly sent us some tights to try out which, as you might have guessed, we are expertly modelling above. I (Jo) plumped for some patterned grey tights from their Best of British range which I have been very impressed with! They fit nicely (no ballet jumps necessary) and I have been quite rough with them but they show no sign of snagging just yet! In contrast, Victoria went for some Luxe Warm Toes Tights* which, although keeping her toes toasty, did actually ladder on the first wear. Oh tights, why do you do this to us?

Hold on tightsHold on tightsHold on tightsHold on tights

I also took the opportunity to wear possibly my favourite sale purchase of all time, the Boden squirrel dress of wonder. It’s so perfect that it hurts my feelings that I can’t just wear it everyday. I teamed it with new Office boots (thanks Mum!), white Topshop socks, a brown Primark belt and my pink Boden* coat. Victoria broke out her disco ball style brogues from New Look at ASOS, her incredible red collared dress from Primark (a recent purchase, Primarni fans), a vintage yellow bag from Clifton based Bees & Graves and her stripy Boden* coat.

We accessorised our outfits with a massive bridge.

Hem and Away: Bluestone

Hem and Away: Bluestone
Victoria wears a Lace Prom Dress from Yumi* with a mustard slip underneath, Big Spot Tights from Gipsy at UKTights* and shoes and sunglasses from Topshop. Jo wears a prom dress from Topshop (old), Sally Tights from Pierre Mantoux at UKTights*, sunglasses from Dahlia and heart shoes from Topshop.

When we first started She and Hem we certainly didn’t think about the many unexpected opportunities that would come our way. We didn’t think about the friends we’d make or the brands we’d work with and we definitely didn’t think we’d be dressed up to the nines on the back of a golf buggy in Wales. However, that’s exactly what happened after we received a letter (an actual physical letter!) from Bluestone National Park Resort inviting us to come try out their ‘adult packages’. Because, dear reader, WE are adults. Totally responsible grown up women. We at no point drove around in the aforementioned golf buggy blaring out Taylor Swift and giggling uncontrollably. At no point did that happen.

Hem and Away: Bluestone Hem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: Bluestone

Bluestone, which you’ll find nestled within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, opened in 2008. It has nearly 300 (we didn’t count them so we’ll take their word for it) luxury lodges, cottages and studio apartments which are all set within their 500 acres (we didn’t measure it so we’ll take their word for it) of countryside. We felt rather jammy indeed living it up in our stylish upside down lodge. We couldn’t quite get over the novelty of having our living room and kitchen area upstairs!

Hem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: Bluestone

As you can see, it’s pretty darn pretty and is naturally a haven for families making use of the many activities on offer. We, however, were there as ADULTS doing ADULT type stuff such as drinking beer, climbing walls and eating delicious pasties for breakfast. In your face, small children.

Bluestone offers four adult only packages, neatly known as Four Play. They aim to appeal in four different ways: Taste, Excite, Amuse and Relax. Luckily for you, we’ve tried them all out so you don’t have to. We’re good like that.

Hem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: Bluestone

For Relax we went to the resort’s Well Spa Retreat and spent a glorious sunny morning relaxing in the hydro pool, hopping from steam room to sauna and lying around checking Twitter relaxing in the relaxation room. We left feeling very refreshed!

As part of the Taste package we were treated to an absolutely delicious meal from their well posh finest restaurant, Carreg Las. We honestly didn’t really know how to contain ourselves when dish after dish of outrageously beautiful food was put before us. Even our bread looked delighted! We would like to publicly thank our waiters Bryony and James for coping with us totally freaking out about how great it is to be bloggers. They were lovely!

Hem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: BluestoneHem and Away: Bluestone

The other two packages, Amuse and Excite, weren’t quite our cup of tea. But then, the Four Play packages are designed so that you can pick and choose which activities you do! Excite came in the form of the adrenaline filled High Ropes course through the woodland. Between us we had one dodgy knee and a fear of heights so it was never going to be one for us. It is, however, very impressive and was definitely being very much enjoyed by the other guests!

Finally, Amuse came in the form of a right royal knees up down at the beautiful Camp Smokey, reached via a boardwalk and hidden among the trees. It really is quite a scene! We were treated to hot cider, a banger filled BBQ and a live band. All of this was rather splendid but unfortunately we weren’t quite as on board with the enforced entertainment of dancing on the tables, party games and a wandering man with a microphone as some of the other guests. Again, this is purely a personal thing but we would have been very content with our jar of cider and a few marshmallows around the fire.

Hem and Away: Bluestone

Those minor qualms aside, we of course had an absolutely fabulous weekend! As well as experiencing the Four Play packages, we also so enjoyed being able to hire our golf buggy and drive around pretending to be a low budget Thelma and Louise. It was excellent fun. We also found time to venture to their flume filled, wave-machine enabled, hot tub containing pool of wonder! See you guys at the adult swim, yeah?

J&V

A massive massive thank you to Bluestone for inviting us. Although they really did spoil us rotten this review is 100% honest and 100% ADULT, obvs.

Accessories to Murder: Halloween Special

Hey Hemsters,

With a name like Accessories to Murder, we could hardly let Halloween pass by without rounding up a spooktacular bonanza of terrifically terrifying accessories. So unlock your front door, disconnect your phone line and ignore that weird noise coming from the basement, it’s A2M time.

Boo Head Band £12 from Urban Outfitters

I think we can all agree that in the Halloween headband (vampire) stakes, this one from Urban Outfitters is pretty brilliant. I’d be tempted to add a my own K, for all year round usage.

Aarrghhhh Necklace
Aarrghhhh Necklace £60 from Tatty Devine

AARRGHHHHH what better way to ward off the zombie apocalypse than with this fabulous necklace from Tatty Devine? There is no better way, I’ve looked into it.

Glitter Witches Hat Headband £12 from Crown and Glory

Purveyors of dream-worthy hair accessories, Crown and Glory have embraced the dark side with a range of nightmarish headbands and clips. This glittery witches hat is my pick of the bunch.

Black Sparkle Mask £14 from Miss Selfridge

I’m always a fan of something that manages to cover up half my face and this great mask from Miss Selfridge would do just the job.

Workwear Wednesday #2

20130606-085957.jpg

It has been a little while since the first Workwear Wednesday post but now that summer has arrived (yes, I consider 17 degrees to be summer) so too has my desire to go for after work drinks. Funny that. This hot weather (yes, I consider 17 degrees to be hot) raises the age old question of what to wear to work that will keep a girl cool but at the same time not look too casual. I’ll admit this probably doesn’t sound too tricky, but I really do struggle with the summer months. I remember going to an interview on one of the hottest days of the year to which I wore trousers, boots, a blouse AND a cardigan because I was so worried about looking too casual.

When the sun appeared at the start of the week, I had a little raid of my wardrobe and dismissed a variety of dresses for either having the right hem line but for being too low cut/strappy or for having a nice conservative top half but being an inappropriate length. Hurummph. Now, obviously different work places have different expectations of your appearance but, for the record, I don’t have to be ‘business smart’ but a strappy top or bare legs would certainly be frowned upon and a general degree of smartness is certainly expected and encouraged.

Yesterday I settled on a yellow and white stripy dress that I picked up at an Oasis sale. It’s lovely and summery and keeps me cool all day but I can happily stroll around work without my blazer on and the length is nicely conservative. Most importantly however, I would also happily wear this out of work. I hate (HATE) buying things that are only for work. It pretty much sucks the joy out of shopping and is something I rarely do; in fact the last time was probably for the dreaded smart grey trousers that I wore to the aforementioned interview.

My navy blazer is from Topshop and, as I came to completely rely on it last summer, I actually own it in two colours.  I am hoping that they bring out something similar this year (although I’ve heard Primark have them). The jersey material and arm length make it perfect for summery work days and as well as going with pretty much everything, they also make every outfit look instantly smarter. I also wore my new M&S nude polka dot tights which I am very excited about as there’s just something about plain old nude tights that irritates me, they just seem a bit pointless. Polka dots, however, are certainly not pointless. I love you, polka dots. The shiny shiny shoes are from New Look

Victoria and I went to St Nick’s Night Market in Bristol and sampled a lot of food and not nearly enough gin. It was a lovely way to spend a summers evening and we got to try some wonderful cuisine. Victoria looked super lovely in her dress from Boohoo, a Miss Selfridge jacket and brogues from Clarks.

Ship shape

Ahoy there sailors! Welcome aboard this nautical fashion adventure. I’ve put on my sea legs and searched high and low for the best maritime wear on the net. Hopefully you’ll want to take a punt on something!

Lighthouse Blouse £36 from Sugarhill Boutique

Avoid having any unwanted ships crash into your rocks by wearing this multifunctional lighthouse blouse by Sugarhill Boutique. This really is a very pretty print and would look just splendid under some dungarees or a pinafore. It could easily become a summer essential.

Eucalyptus Marina Skirt in Boat Print £55 from MeMe Boutique

You’ll look like a real diamond in this rather smashing marina print skirt from Me Me. It has some beautiful seaside colours in it, making it a rather delightful summer wear. Just throw on some sandals and you’re good for a stroll around the harbour.

Sailor Dress £28 from Pop Boutique

You can certainly embrace your inner sailor in this navy number. Isn’t it lovely? Oh how I wish Bristol had its own Pop Boutique! The website is just no substitute for the fun of the shop! However, beggars can’t be choosers and as long as I can still get my hands on gorgeous dresses like these for 28 of my shiniest gold coins, I’m happy. She might look a bit uneasy on that swing but I am also a big fan of the model’s beret! Model, I salute you and your headgear.

Anchor Tights £6 from Gipsy Tights

I do love a novelty tight and these tick all the right boxes in being fun enough to attract compliments but not so fun that they don’t go with anything I own. Fresh from Gipsy Tights, I think they are a bit of a bargain at £6 and much like a real anchor they will hold everything firmly in place.

Polka Dot and Boat Dress £45 from Yumi

The world has being crying out for a polka dot and boats combination and it was only a matter of time before Yumi came to our rescue. I hope this isn’t too overboard but I really think there’s nothing not to love about this dress! It would be a winner even with just those big bold polka dots! The added bonus of the boats circling the hem line is just peachy and makes it very special indeed.

Bay Boat Skirt £35 by Louche from Joy

Louche have a variety of nautical niceties for you to enjoy but I am personally rather partial to this bay boat skirt. For one thing it has hot air balloons on it, for another it has some nice houses on it and for another is has some…ermm…trees on it? Obviously. Essentially it’s completely barmy which is no doubt why I love it so much. If you like it as much as I do you will be cheered to discover it is also comes as a dress, both of which are available from Joy.

Winne Anchor Embroidered Shorts £32 by Louche from Joy

Who likes short shorts? Well it turns out I do if they come with a sweet embroidered anchor print, which it just so happens these do.  I would happily throw these in my suitcase to prance about in holiday but back at home I would wear them over tights as I wouldn’t want to risk blinding anyone with my bare legs or exposing my booty to unwitting passers-by. Also from Louche at Joy, they are yours for £32.

Adali Shoes $39.99 (£26ish) by Loly in the Sky

Hey guys, it’s just some shoes with lobsters on, no biggy. These slip-ons are so gorgeous and they look lovely and comfortable too, no risk of blistering barnacles here! Loly in the Sky simply make the most fun shoes! I am seriously considering moving to Mexico so that I can buy them all without having to pay for the shipping.

Sailing Button Front Dress £65 from Cath Kidston

Cath Kidston have done the most underhanded thing in creating an entire collection of clothes that we want to own.  It’s outrageous. I practically have to run past the shop, eyes to the ground, for fear of seeing yet another dress/skirt/cardigan/top that I love. Not content with introducing the train print and the cottage print, good old Cath has also brought out this beautiful sailing print. The dresses are really the stars of the show as they are just so flattering and with their hidden pockets and ability to be dressed up or down. I guess with that in mind I can forgive them for plundering my wages.

Anchor Necklace £15 from Tatty Devine

More anchors! This time in necklace form. It’s no secret that we at She and Hem are big Tatty Devine lovers but sadly our bank balances don’t always stretch to such luxuries. At £15 this particular piece is great value and comes in a choice of three colours.

Push the Boat Out Dress Yellow Yachts £55 from Trollied Dolly

This fetching sunny dress from Trollied Dolly will certainly cheer up your travels. The shape is rather fun and should be super flattering too as it has a nice tie back. I really like retro style design and the unusual detailing around the neckline really helps to make this dress stand out.

Toucan play that game

My heart is all of a flutter for the many  bird prints that are currently taking over the high street. Here are some of my current favourites!

Fiesta Flamingo Dress – Coral £48 from Sugarhill Boutique

First up is the zesty little flamingo number from Sugarhill Boutique. It will be fabulous fun to wear in the summer months (if and when they arrive) and would also be perfect for the current climate when teamed with tights and a denim jacket. The back also has a really unusual criss cross detailing which is an added bonus.

Zatchel Flamingo Print Bag £120 available exclusively from Oliver Bonas

Sticking with flamingos, next we have this incredible Zatchel, which is an Oliver Bonas exclusive. I consider £120 a lot of money to be spending on a bag but I have heard such great things about Zatchel that I am definitely tempted. I can just imagine the looks of envy I would receive on parading around town with this bag. FlamingWOAH, ammiright?

Orla Kiely Love Bird Print Skirt £58 from People Tree

Orla Kiely can do no wrong in my eyes and her collection for People Tree is no exception. I have spent many hours of drooling over her website so it’s a nice change to be drooling over something which isn’t completely out of my budget. This love bird print skirt is top of my wish list.

Bird Song Print Dress £29 by Poem

Back to Oliver Bonas and this Bird Song dress by their  in house brand Poem. This dress looks so easy to wear! You could just throw it on and go. A perfect weekend dress. I really love the little bow belt too. Good work, Bonas.

Toucan Print Shorts from £30 Yumi

SHORTS! TOUCAN PRINT SHORTS! WITH A BOW! I got very excited when I saw these on the Yumi site and then I tried to imagine how the devil I would get away with wearing them. I’m not sure I can get away with them but I might have to go in and try them on – just to be sure.

Peach Bamboo Bird Tights £10 from Topshop

I have really got to stop buying tights but it’s so difficult when presented with cuties like these! I find Topshop tights to be some of the best quality on the high street and these pretty bird print tights are like nothing I own.

Bryony Dress £55 from Monsoon

Here we have my perfect birdy work dress from Monsoon. It looks so lovely and light to wear! It’s a good length, it has sleeves (!), a tie waist and cute little buttons too.

Puffin Beach Skirt £22 from Vintage Style Me

Back to the fun stuff now and look at this puffin print skirt from Style Vintage Me. It’s just all kinds of adorable and makes me want to go on holiday right now.

White Birds Scarf Watch £52 from Olivia Burton

I have always been a bit useless about wearing watches, either forgetting to put them on in the morning or losing them, but since receiving an Olivia Burton watch for Christmas this is no more! I actually understand what it is to feel naked without a watch! This bird print scarf watch looks perfect for summer and I really enjoy the idea of being able to tie my strap in a bow.

Workwear Wednesday #1

You suck, Wednesday.

I surely can’t be the only person who totally hates Wednesdays? I am now completely ready for the weekend to begin and yet for some cruel reason we have another two whole days to go. How can I possibly get over this news? Well, with weekly 2-4-1 cocktails of course!

P1030023This boozy little arrangement was initiated just last week when the sun was out and everyone in the city simultaneously decided to get outside and pretend that they didn’t have to get up and go to work the next day. Myself, Victoria and some friends joined the masses in descending on the newly opened Caribbean restaurant, Turtle Bay, that offers a happy hour that actually lasts for 7 (SEVEN) hours in total.  Despite the sun pulling a fast one on us, our midweek drinking club carried on unperturbed, as we continued working our way working through the fabulous cocktail menu. The drinks we have tried so far have all been magnificent and the staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If you live in Bristol you should definitely pay them a visit.

P1030030 P1030026 P1030029 P1030034

I find dressing for work pretty difficult, especially in the summer months, and seem to resort to being quite lazy with my choices. I’m hoping that this blog (and the threat of seeing my friends straight after work!) will give me the boost I need to really think about what I am wearing and perhaps inspire me to try new things. Victoria and I are hoping to turn this into a weekly working wardrobe feature so fingers crossed the cocktails keep coming!

P1030038 P1030036 P1030022

Today I wore a dress that I picked up in the Jaeger sale a few weeks ago. It was reduced to £45 from £160 and seeing as Jaeger is the sort of shop I usually stand outside of feeling poor, this was a small sale victory for me. At £45 it’s still a bit extravagant for a work dress but I know I will be able to wear it all year round and it’s such a great length. I can probably stop justifying it to you now.

I wore it with polka-dot tights from M&S, Topshop boots, my trusty old H&M cardigan and a satchel from The Cambridge Satchel Company. I bought the necklace from The POD Company shop in Clifton during my lunch break as I absolutely adore anything which incorporates a good clock. I have seen (and own) many variations of clock necklaces but I think this one is especially beautiful and for £9.95 it was only ever destined for the till.

Have a lovely Thursday!
