Hem and Away: Swinging London Town

We went on a wee jaunt to London recently to celebrate Jo’s birthday and while we were there we took the opportunity to pay a visit to some of our favourite shops, with plenty of pancake breaks along the way! On the train journey into London we were treated to a fantastic display by the Red Arrows (which I had so kindly arranged for Jo’s birthday of course….!!)

It was a positively scorching day in London, so after a cheeky iced latte we found ourselves cooled off and ready to face the day ahead. Our first port of call was The Breakfast Club in Hoxton, where we had…er…breakfast!  Pancake stacks to be precise, with added berries for Jo and bacon for myself. As you can see below, they were towering conglomerations of awesome! We will definitely be going back next time we are in town.

There’s only one place to go when you are full of pancakes, iced tea and good vibes and that is the marvelous Covent Garden. We had a blast checking out what Covent Garden had to offer and were notably impressed with Pop Boutique, Rokit, Cath Kidston, Tatty Devine and Cambridge Satchel Company.

We are both big Tatty Devine fans, and I am exceptionally fond of their Eyelash Sunglasses, found here, and who can resist the burger collection, here.

As the weather was very favorable to us I chose to wear the most lightweight dress I could find in my wardrobe, which was this super stripey number from Primark. My most comfortable shoes were in order as we have a bit of a habit of getting a little lost when we are let out of Bristol, so I wore my Clarks sandals. My Cath Kidston train print rucksack, which I blogged about in my Croatia post, came in very handy to store my sale bargains in. I also wore my name necklace from Tatty Devine and my amazing spotty manicure (as seen above) was done by the lovely ladies at WAH Nails.

Jo – Like Victoria, I also wanted something extremely lightweight so I went for a navy polkadot dress from Instant Vintage. I love anything that’s easy to wear and this dress is my go to ‘look like I’ve made an effort without having made any’ number, which is exactly what you need when the it’s super hot!  It has a lovely Peter Pan collar too, making it suitably jazzy birthday attire. Anyone who reads this blog regularly won’t need telling that my white shoes are from Topshop. I really am guilty of wearing the same shoes everyday and for that I am very sorry. I promise to try harder in the footwear department.

After a long hard day shopping we were ready for a quick snack before heading home, so Jo introduced me to the delights of Shake Shack, which she had previously visited in New York. I had the mouthwateringly good Shack-cago Dog and was not disappointed.

Jo – It’s often said that I look like I could use a good burger so it made sense to have one on my birthday! I am a bit of a Shake Shack obsessive and I was overjoyed when they announced earlier in the year that they would be opening their first UK branch in London. This was my first chance to go and I was not disappointed. The frozen chocolate ice cream was once of the nicest things I’ve ever eaten, seriously.

Hem and Away: Osiris Launch

osiris13

Last week we were lucky enough to be invited to London to attend the launch of the vibrant new collection by Osiris eyewear, in collaboration with Paris based fashion designer Jørgen Simonsen. Simonsen’s A-List clientele includes Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and now, She and Hem! The event was held in Searcys on the top floor of The Gherkin, so with the sun setting in the background the views were absolutely phenomenal and it was the perfect place to celebrate both the glasses launch and the eve of Jo’s birthday!

Jørgen, seen above with Dame Mary Perkins, representing Specsavers and two models, gave a warm welcome speech and described how the glasses are designed in mind for ‘people who like to dare’, as the designs are modern and empowering, using contemporary shapes and materials. They certainly make a statement. Jørgen was on hand all night to offer styling advice, which was lovely to see and very informative too. We had great fun trying on the range, and deciding which frames were our favourites. As part of the fantastic goodie bags, we were both given the chance to go to Specsavers and choose a pair of glasses from the new range once it hits the shops on August 14th. We cannot wait!

The Osiris 2013 range comprises three key collections; Colour Pop, Frosted Hi-tech and Super Translucent, which all stand out from the crowd. We found the collection to be really sleek, fresh and minimalistic. The glasses felt incredibly light, without losing any of their quality. Jo was a big fan of the white frosted hi-tech, and I have my eye(s!) on the super translucent frames Jo is modelling exceptionally well below. I think the glasses have a beautiful shape and would be suitable to wear to work, and to play!

What could be better than a launch party in a lovely location with the food and drink flowing you ask? Well, how about 2 awesome DJs in the form of top fashion designers Henry Holland and Giles Deacon. I’m sure all guests at the event will confirm what great fun these two were, and their musical choices were spot on, making the event even hotter. Literally…it felt like a greenhouse in there! The stunning Pixie Geldof was also on hand to support her friends’ japes on the decks.

Jo –  I wore my new pink organza prom dress from Topshop that I picked up for £15 in their sale! I own the dress in green too and just love the pretty shape and texture. It’s only available in one size on the website now but I’ve seen plenty in store. I felt that a special occasion warranted special shoes so I broke out my most treasured possession, my Miu Miu shoes that I bought from My Theresa. I love them so much, especially the beautiful curved heel, and they set the dress of perfectly! In a bid to try and make my outift look a bit less girly I added my gorgeous Rachel Loves Bob necklace that we received when we went to the Objets De Désir Pop Up! I did feel like a bit of a Princess, although granted a Princess who regretted wearing her hair down on one of the hottest days of the year to a building made entirely of glass. Whoopsie!

Victoria – Having worn glasses for the last 17 years, I was super excited about attending this event, so decided to buy something new. I choose this eye catching quirky dress by Voulez Vous, available at Debenhams. I had shortlisted a few dresses in store that I liked, and although this was the cheapest of the bunch, when trying them all on, this was the clear winner! I was worried it may be too casual for the event, but it just felt comfortable and very ‘me’. I decided to be brave and wear my highest heels, which definitely made me feel more confident, especially when surrounded by all of the glamorous guests (and fellow bloggers of course!) They are from George, who as you may remember from a previous post, I love because they do half sizes. My silver clutch  is from Topshop, and is a life saver as it can hold a spare pair of shoes and my SLR while still looking glam.

Accessories to Murder #2

I love a good frock, kittens and swooning over Ryan Gosling, but I’m no girly girl! Oh no, I steer clear of butterflies, manicures and high heels, and according to my medical records, I’m (literally!) allergic to pink. Pink food colouring that is, but you get the idea. So imagine my surprise when I fell for a sugar-sweet candy pink satchel this week. This satchel was made for me – it’s even called Victoria. It’s part of the glorious ‘London Calling’ collection by Tom Brown’s Satchels, and if you ask nicely, it’s also available as a backpack.

Victoria, Tom Brown’s Satchels, £70.

While browsing the satchels on offer, I came across the metallic silver Buchanan, which is part of the trendy ‘Gatsby’ collection. I certainly recommend investing in a good quality satchel. They are so handy and look great with most outfits, smart or casual. I think I’ll embrace my inner Daisy and take them both please Tom!

Next up, two vintage style lovelies from cloth-ears, a family business from my favourite part of Kent, Whitstable. Here’s one for you crafty types out there. This quirky needle and thread bracelet features a teeny sewing machine, thimble and scissor charms, and it’s a real snip for £16.99.

Needle and Thread bracelet, cloth-ears, £16.99.

Continuing the vintage style, this Paper Plane Necklace is sure to make a dull day zooming by with its colourful stripey ribbon and cute bird charms.  Flying in at a very reasonable £9.99, this would make a really special present. Alternatively, I would buy it to wear on holiday, and then keep as a reminder of my time away.

I’ve taken a real liking for brooches and badges recently, as they are such an easy and affordable way to make your outfit more fun and unique. As I mentioned above I’m not one for butterflies, but I can totally get on board with owls. They’re such a hoot! Especially little blue wooden owls. It would be very wise (like an owl…!!) to purchase one of these beauties from The Bristol Shop as soon as possible. You can find a discount code for 7% off of anything you buy here. I couldn’t tell you owl much the total will be, I just can’t do the owl-gebra…

Owls about that then! I like to try and cover a bit of everything on Accessories to Murder, so last up it’s only fair I point you in the direction of this cheeky ring. You probably won’t be surprised to discover this but…it’s a cat!  I couldn’t resist this kitty’s confused little face. It’s pawsitively puurfect and makes me smile just by looking at it. I love Lazy Oaf, their items are SO lovable and fun. Catch up with their blog here.
