Hello hello! Welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses, our roundup of the frocks we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted double thumbs seal of approval! Let’s crack on…
I’ve really been loving River Island lately! They’ve been adding so many dreamy SS16 pieces to their website that I seem to be adding to my wishlist on a daily basis (weirdly I can never find anything in store though). With an abundance of polkadots, organza, floral and lace between them, these two beauts are my current picks of the bunch.
I’m just going to stick my oar in and declare how much I enjoy this new nautical print by Jack Wills. It’s a lovely summery affair with a full skirt and fit and flare shape but, thankfully, I think it would look just as nice with a bright cardigan and some thick woolly tights.
You can’t beat a sweet cherry and this super pretty print from Sugarhill Boutique is a real fruity number. The delicate pinks and greys look gorgeous set against the white of this textured dress.
You might recognise this fun frock from our previous style post (which you should totally read as it includes the chance to win a £50 Aspire Style voucher)! It’s one of my absolute favourites from the new Emily and Fin collection – the print is just perfection! It’s available from Aspire Style and, for our American pals, Modcloth.
This lace shirt dress from Warehouse is the stuff of dreams. Argh it’s SO pretty! I love the shirt detailing at the top with the little collar. And then that lace overlay! Stunning.
Speaking of dreaming….I am probably never going to own this beautiful Needle & Thread dress but gosh darn isn’t it something? It looks like it would have excellent wafting abilities and that fabulous floral peony print with the little lace inserts is just wonderful. Sigh.
Hello and welcome to the 23rd Accessories to Murder! Are you ready to delve into the world of amazing accessories? Excellent! Without further ado, here are the accessories that have made it onto this week’s She and Hem’s Most Wanted.
Pretend everyday is your birthday with this Bow Box Bag from ASOS. It’s cute, sparkly and has a massive bow. What’s not to love? I feel like I can’t move onto the next item without also mentioning those incredible pink bow heels. Now I can’t seem to find them online, but I have found a silver version here, which are just as special. Bow fans, you are very welcome.
Running with the novelty bag theme for a moment, next up we have this Shell Clutch Bag, chosen especially for all of our mermaid readers. Believe me, I’ve checked the stats and those mermaids love to keep a keen eye on our Most Wanted. This clutch is such a beaut that I’d be more than happy to shell out a few clams for it. If it’s not for you, then get the shell out of here!
All of my sugary dreams have come true because some absolute genius has created a Poptart Phone Case. Here’s hoping it’s the start of a whole Poptart range. I want to see Poptart pyjamas, Poptart bikinis and Poptart pants. If any of these things already exist, let me know, yeah?
Although this purse is more Popsicle than Poptart, it’s definitely just as tasty. Kate Spade is full of gorgeous items at the moment, but I thought I’d give you the scoop on this ice cream dream. The fun and colourful print also comes in other flavours, with a sleek and slim card wallet also available. Treat yourself and get them both.
Accessorize seem to be going out of their way to ensure I’ve saved up no pennies for my upcoming holiday. First up I just HAD to buy the Robot Bag, followed by the awesome Radio Bag, and now they go and release the twee as you like Picnic Basket Bag. I’m an utter basket case for gingham. Top Tip, if you can find a store with any Robot Bags left, they are now measly FIVE POUNDS!
To be honest, I’ve not completely made up my mind about these Cheshire Cat Pumps, part of the Alice in Wonderland collaboration between Irregular Choice and Office. They are so fun, look super comfortable with that cute small heel, and c’mon the have a big smiling cat on for goodness sake. I’m just not sure where I would wear them, yet I am strangely captivated by them. I think the price is also a little off putting, but I’m sure I will be ALL over them if they get reduced.
Let me know what you think of this weeks items, and keep accessorizing!
Hello again and welcome to the 19th Accessories to Murder! Regular readers may have noticed that Accessories to Murder is now back on track, and you’ll have a lovely new post ready for you every Sunday. So pop it into your diary, or if you are just far too modern and fancy for a pen and paper, follow us on Bloglovin and never miss a post! So, are you ready to delve into the world of amazing accessories? Excellent! Without further ado, here are the accessories that have made it onto this week’s She and Hem’s Most Wanted.
Tired of wearing your heart on your sleeve? Well, wear it on your feet instead with these ASOS heart flats. Just in time for your Valentine’s Day outfit too! I’m thinking full on hearts this year, so these loooverly shoes are the perfect finishing touch to my hella twee look. Simple but just quirky enough to make it through the tough Accessories to Murder selection process.
If those flats aren’t quite right for you, here’s another adorable option. This cute pair in ‘Poppy Red’ from Boden are blooming beautiful. We recently featured them on our Instagram and they got oh so much love. They have a pretty bow detail and are flat enough for the walk home after you’ve been wined and dined on Valentine’s Day…or for my walk to kitchen to get just one last biscuit.
I hadn’t really considered Modcloth when buying swimwear until about a year ago, when I spotted one of their incredible swimsuits online. I added this to my Pinterest ‘Wish List‘, causing a internet sensation mild murmuring, and the cossie to be repinned here, there and everywhere! I’ve kept a keen eye on their swimwear ever since, and it is always fun, flattering and fabulous. This swimsuit from Modcloth features cute cats and cupcakes floating around in space. Cats. In. Space. What else could you possibly want?
I am a huge fan of all things Skinnydip, so I was pretty hyped when Jo sent me a link to this beauty. I predict the sales of this Skinnydip cactus bag, and matching luggage tag, are due to spike sometime soon, so hurry up and get your hands on this super succulent! Don’t put your hands on a real cactus, that would hurt and leave you feeling awful prickly.
This gorgeous Betsey Johnson bag might just be my perfect Valentine’s present right here. Can someone please point it in the direction of my husband? I’ve become quite the Betsey Johnson fan after featuring the incredible working phone in the recent January Sales post. I had so many messages from readers who loved the phone bag, hopefully this one will be just as popular. You may not be able to make calls with it, but it does have a really sparkly bow, so y’know, every cloud.
Yes, I know this is slightly more expensive than our usual Most Wanted novelty bags, but I’ve found it here via Nordstrom for much less than if buying direct from the Kate Spade website. How kind am I? Kate Spade has always been a high flyer in the world of whimsical clutch design, and my love for this kite bag is going up, up and away!
I really recommend that everyone has at least one staple yellow handbag in their wardrobe. I use my yellow Boden Westminster handbag every single day and I absolutely love the pop of colour it adds to any outfit. New Look have just released this tote, their very own sunshiny dream, for a very affordable £24.99!
Stacked pancake socks.Sometimes, a picture really does say a thousand words. So instead of raving about these, I shall just give you my top stock sock tip. If I was going for the famous ‘3 for £8’ Topshop sock deal, I would also pick the Coffee and Donuts and I Loaf You pairs. Why? Because they are awesome.
Frock horror! Welcome to a spooktacular edition of Double Thumbs Dresses! Our roundup of the frocks deemed worthy of the highly horrific coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval. Read on….if you dare!
(insert moderately evil cackle here)
First up we have these two ghoulish delights from the wonderful Silly Old Sea Dog! Both dresses are 1950s in style with lovely full circular skirts – perfect for popping a petticoat underneath and having a good twirl. The first frock features a rather adorable ghost print which, hold the lantern, actually glows in the dark! Amazing. More dresses should be visible in the darkness. The second features a fine display of terrifying zombie posters, sure to give the shivers to all you see.
You can always trust Modcloth to get on board with a theme and this Halloweentastic dress is no exception! With a thrilling selection of pumpkins, ghosts, cobwebs, and ermm kittens, you’ll look more treat than trick! Also, purple and orange! What a fabulous combination.
This ameowsing Lindy Bop frock has a touch of the Bewitched about it, dontcha think? That retro black cat print is truly wicked and set against that gorgeous blue the whole thing is rather stunning.
If you’ve been thinking of vamping up your Halloween wardrobe, it could be a sign that this glittery Zodiac print from Motel should be yours! I am loving the glitter against that luxurious velvet and, oh my, I am just bats for those sleeves! If you’re currently reading this and thinking ‘if only they’d slasher the price’ then perhaps have a little look in our sidebar, I see a discount code in your future……
This Lazy Oaf dress from ASOS is surely the cats whiskers with that puuuurfect bit of embroidery! I’m not sure anyone would object to you crossing their path in this number! I love the stretchy velvet material and the exaggerated collar but my favourite thing about this dress is that it has hidden pockets! Perfect for stashing your sweets.
It’s almost like I see Halloween as an excuse to wear as many cats as possible! This Brat & Suzie number from ASOS is perfectly fangtastic and those scaredy cats are actually pretty adorable.
This is a fiendishly fun dress from Hell Bunny at Tiger Milly! Set in a 50’s diner, it features a whole host of zombie pin up waitresses holding ice creams with eyeballs, brains and fingers.Oh my! Perfect! Love the shape and halterneck too.
If you are reading this in Australia (and by golly I would love to know if you are) then you should definitely check out the fabulous Pigtails and Pirates! So many great dresses! This Zombie Apocalypse print is just the ticket for Halloween as it features some rather cute zombies (one of them is even wearing a rather fetching green bow) take over their town. They do ship internationally so don’t freak out!
Why did the skeleton go to the party alone? Because he had nobody to go with! Well, Topshop have sorted that old conundrum out with this skeleton print midi dress. There’s no bones about it, you would probably only wear this dress once a year but I think you’ll agree it’s head and shoulders above the rest. (sorry).
And if you want to go the extra mile this Halloween and dress as me after one too many gins, then Very have got you covered.
Ah, hot air balloons! How we love you. We never take this unique part of our city for granted but it was a special reminder recently when we went to meet with the fabulous Charlotte from Betty magazine (OMG, we know) when, as we sat outside in the glorious sunshine on the top deck of a boat, cocktail in hand, three should suddenly float over our heads – much to Charlotte’s surprise and delight! “This is Bristol” we said, “isn’t it the best?”
The Bristol Balloon Fiesta, then, is the highlight of any local balloon enthusiasts diary and we always try and go to, or at least sit and watch from a distance, as many mass ascents as possible over the four days the Fiesta runs for. This year was no different and between us we watched them all! GO TEAM. It’s fair to say that whether you are down at the Fiesta itself, or perched up on a hill, or even just sitting looking out of your window with a cup of tea, there’s no better sight!
On Thursday evening we ventured down to the Fiesta site at Ashton Court for the first balloon launch and the night glow. We always like to dress for the occasion and this year was no different as once again we broke out the balloon print dresses. Victoria wore a handmade dress (Mumma V is a talented lady!) which was made using a Christine Haynes pattern and yellow heart sunglasses from Primark (fancier but similar version here). I (Jo) wore a Rosalita McGee balloon print dress and a hot air balloon bag which are both from Modcloth and teamed them with brown heart sunglasses from Topshop. Will we ever get bored of heart sunglasses? Probably not!
As much fun as it is to visit the Fiesta for the night glow, we particularly love going down to Ashton Court for the morning ascents (even if it does mean getting up at silly-AM) as there really is something truly magical about watching so many balloons go up when the rest of the city is still sleeping. We’ll be blogging about our time at the Saturday morning ascent later in the week (as well as some very special outfits from Emily and Fin) but if you can’t wait until then (or you just love balloons as much as we do) then have a watch of our Bristol Balloon Fiesta vlog to get a sneaky look at what we got up to as well as the rest of our time at the Fiesta.
We’ve spent the weekend in a hot air balloon frenzy as we visited the 37th Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. Have a watch of our new vlog to see just why we love this time of year so much as well as getting a sneaky peak at the photos we have taken for our next Emily and Fin collaboration.
We are still very much getting to grips with vlogging so please do let us know what you think!
Well hello there and welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses! Just when you thought I’d forgotten about you, eh? As Cher Horowitz would say, AS IF! I am back with a new roundup of the dresses we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval…..
We begin with this bit of retro gorgeousness courtesy of the wonderful Boden, who continue to knock it out of the park season after season! That massive floral print is bloomin’ marvelous and who doesn’t love a cheeky little shift now and again?
Oh blimey, you should all know by now that the way to my clothes-loving heart is with a hot air balloon so naturally I was all over this Oliver Bonas frock when I spotted it in store! As well as the balloons this dress features adorable hand drawn images of famous landmarks from London, Paris and Pisa. It’s so pretty and perfect for Summer.
I love love love the colours of this chic little Warehouse dress! It’s just so darn bright and the 70s style and print are totally fab! I usually worry about a high neck but actually I think this dress would be super flattering.
This ship shape dress from Cutie (available from New Look and Modcloth) is really floating my boat! The tugboat illustrations are just lovely and make this simple dress so delightfully playful.
I wasn’t initially sure about the whole denim dress trend but thanks to seeing a lot of other bloggers looks fabulous in them I now find myself coveting this little beauty from Marks and Spencer. It just looks so nice! and so easy to wear! and I want one!
The new in section of F&F is a triumph at the moment, it really is. They’ve gone a bit 60s & 70s inspired dresses crazy and I for one am LOVING IT. This poppy print shirt dress is my pick of the bunch thanks to those dreamy sleeves.
I’ve also really been loving River Island of late and this neat little paisley print shirt dress is a fine example of why. The colours are just dreamy with the yellows, pinks, and browns all complimenting each other perfectly. Worn with the collar open and the sleeves rolled up, you my friend would be hot to trot.
Wimbledon might be over but surely strawberries and cream never truly goes out of style! I think this fruity number from Oasis looks good enough to eat and I am eyeing up ready for my sunny summer holiday next month!
Hello hello and welcome back to Double Thumbs Dresses! Our frocktacular roundup of the dresses deemed worthy of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval! What more could you ask for on this Bank Holiday weekend?
First up we have this massive sleeved wonder dress from ASOS. It’s yellow, it’s 70’s and it went in my basket the moment I set eyes on it! I wasn’t sure if I could pull off the style but for under £40 I thought it was worth a go! You can see how I got on with my newly flared arms over on our Instagram…
Uhoh, I’ve fallen head over heels for Rachel Riley‘s dresses! And no, before you starting Googling, it’s not the one from Countdown….although there are still some rather large numbers involved sadly! Much like our beloved Poppy, Rachel Riley design beautiful clothes for children but, as I have now discovered, they also have a range of wonderful pieces for ladies. Stocked over at House of Fraser, I am now obsessed with their vintage inspired prints and shapes! What a conundrum for my bank balance.
You can’t go wrong with a sassy splash of colour and this loud and proud floral from Louche at Joy is screaming Summer! That shade of green is particularly lovely and the reds, yellows and blues really pop when set against it. Gorgeous!
Be still my beating heart, what is this glorious Chicwish creation? It is simply perfect. The colours, the carnation print, thosesleeves! Not to mention the super flattering cut and the cute little button up detail. Plus I always appreciate a nice belt. It makes me feel like I’m getting a free gift. I really might need a lie down.
I do love a nice nautical and this is such a fab vintage style print from Jack Wills, featuring little sail boats, delightful old bridges, and what appears to be a man fishing from the comfort of his canoe. This dress is actually available in a different style on ASOS but I really love this take on the traditional skater dress. The fanned out skirt has perfect twirling potential!
I am always on the look out for hot air balloon prints (who isn’t) so you can imagine the gasping that happened when this little beauty appeared on Modcloth! I practically took off! I’d love it whatever but the adorable bow, the gorgeous teal and magenta hues, and the simple A-line shape really do make this one a winner for me.
Last but not least is a dress that has been a long time coming! The cowboy print from Cath Kidston was one of the first of theirs that I truly fell in love with and it has always distressed me slightly that I’ve never been able to own a dress in the print. Well, consider me distressed no more as I was very happy to find this beauty in their latest collection! Yeehaw!
Hello hello! It’s Double Thumbs time again! Our roundup of the dresses we have deemed worthy of the highly coveted She and Hem Double Thumbs seal of approval. Let’s begin!
I think we’ve successfully established that we really appreciate a good hot air balloon print, especially when it’s on a dress! This Effie’s Heart dress from Modcloth therefore ticks all of the right She and Hem boxes. Plus it has a massive bow. You just can’t argue with that level of brilliance
Speaking of brilliance, the Emily and Fin A/W collection has truly blown my novelty print loving socks off. For the impatient among you (hi), a few of the pieces are already available to pre-order from Aspire Style. Look at those adorable little envelopes! Look at those adorable little forks! I can also promise you skiers, roaming deer and figure skaters in the future. Crikey.
Yet more torture for the bank balance as Poppy have also unveiled their A/W collection. There are a lot of lovely new prints to choose from but I instantly fell for this hardware print frock. I just hope I don’t feel like a tool in it.
It may be August (emphasis on the may. Sunshine, why do you hate us?) but I have already found a contender for my Christmas and New Year dress. I love this sparkly 60’s inspired number from Monsoon. So shiny.
Whilst we were in Brighton last week we discovered our new favourite shop, Pretty Eccentric. We spent an embarrassing amount of time cooing over all of the fabulous dresses and totally fell in love with this stunning lace princess dress. We really need to go to more balls.
There’s something ever so pleasing about this ASOS skater dress. I love the navy and white together and can imagine throwing it on for any occasion. The shape is gorgeous too. A perfect ‘go to’ dress.
This is quite the gorgeous print dress from Uttam. I adore the beautiful trees and flowers but those colours just take it to a whole other level of dreamy. Perfect.
Well, it seemed unlikely we were going to get through a Double Thumbs without any cats didn’t it? Thank you dear ASOS for making this ridiculous purple pussy dress of wonder.
It’s no yolk, this really is an egg print smock dress! THE WHITEPEPPER have really gone to town with their Fry Up collection and I have to say it really is cracking. I know there will be a massive scramble for these so I’m going to buy one before they all get poached.
Bristol is a city that blimmin’ loves its hot air balloons. It is certainly not unusual to see them gracefully floating over our beautiful city at any time of the year and, quite frankly, I’m not sure you can call yourself a true Bristolian until you’ve been woken up by the sound of a balloon that’s possibly about to land on your roof. It’s a novelty that never wears off, trust us.
So, it’s no shock then that we are massive fans of the annual International Balloon Fiesta, held at Ashton Court. This free (FREE!) event is in it’s 36th year and without blowing too much hot air, is one of the greatest things in the world. Ever. Seeing over a hundred balloons fill the sky is one magical sight, you might even call it an uplifting experience.
We went down to Ashton Court on Thursday evening for the first mass ascent and, being the super balloon fans that we are, dressed accordingly in hot air balloon print dresses from Modcloth and Nishe at ASOS (this dress is no longer available but keep your eyes peeled for a new balloon print dress by Nishe on Double Thumbs soon!). This was also our first glimpse at this year’s special shapes! Previous years have seen everything from fire extinguishers to the Bertie Basset man! Our favourite new shape this year has to be the Smurf but we were very pleased to see the Up balloon back for another year.
We hope you have enjoyed our ballooning experience as we went back for more the next day! Look out for part two!
