Double Thumbs Dresses #17

Hey Hemsters!

In need of a mid week pick me up? Well look no further than this week’s round up of the dresses deemed deserving of the highly coveted Double Thumbs seal of approval. Warning: this week may contain sparkle.

Floral Jacquard Dress
Floral Jacquard Dress £85 by ‘Loved by Mollie’ for Oasis

I’m not usually one for a celebrity fashion line but I’ll admit my interest was piqued when glossy haired purveyor of short shorts, and Victoria’s style crush, Mollie King threw her fashionable hat into the ring this week with the launch of her Oasis edit. Personally, I was expecting a lot of the aforementioned short shorts plus maybe a nice blazer or two. What I was not expecting was this incredible vintage inspired floral jacquared dress. Holy Moly Mollie, what are you trying to do to me? I just love love LOVE everything about this dress. The  winter floral colours are divine and it looks like it would fit like a dream. Have I mentioned the sleeves? Look at those sleeves! And I’ve managed to get through this entire paragraph without making a single Saturdays joke! Things are looking Up…

Textured Fit and Flare Dress £45 by Poem from Oliver Bonas

You’ll cut the mustard in this, errr, mustard dress from Oliver Bonas‘ in-house collection, Poem. This is the sort of dress that I would wear at least once a week. It’s an absolute A/W staple and I can already think of at least 507 ways I could wear it. Bonus points to Bonas who have teamed it on the website with a lovely big necklace and silver shiny dancing shoes. I think it would look equally as special with big boots and a long chunky cardy.

Limited Edition No Peep™ Faux Pearl Embellished Collar Spotted Shirt Dress - Marks & Spencer
Faux Pearl Embellished Collar Spotted Shirt Dress £45 from Marks and Spencers

You may remember last week that I was dribbling with desire over a rather lovely polka-dot dress that Victoria had pinned over on a Pinterest board (subtle come follow us on Pinterest plug). Well, imagine what happened when I spied this little stunner from M&S? EVEN MORE DRIBBLE THAT’S WHAT. It has a pearl collar for goodness sake! What a triumph. It’s a lovely shape and M&S even promise to maintain your modesty with ‘concealed extra buttons’. However if you read the reviews it apparently comes up rather short. Modesty: unmaintained.

Cross Embellished Skater Dress £85.00 from Topshop

I genuinely thought someone famous was in my local Topshop when I walked in over the weekend. Such was the size of the crowd gathered around the above dress. The website doesn’t even do it justice, it’s simply beautiful and oh so sparkly! Can I mention New Years Eve in October? Probably not. Continue reading Double Thumbs Dresses #17

She and Home: Aldo

DSC_0414IMG_4839

After a lovely sunny day spent browsing the Vintage Kilo Sale at Paintworks in Bristol. We headed to a small shopping party held at Aldo in Cabot Circus, to take advantage of their 15% discount on all shoes and accessories while quaffing some champers and devouring some battenberg cake. We are totally crushing on all of the ankle boots and brogues, so we will be crossing all of our fingers and toes that we win the raffle!

Aldo’s vision is to make people feel good through the products they provide. We would certainly feel good if we owned some of these amazing shoes. I was a big fan of the Nogoya red brogues, while Jo found true love with these Alcidine ankle boots. We popped them on our Christmas lists, which are now the size of a giraffe’s scarf!

Double Thumbs Dresses #12

Hello hello! I’m back with another round-up of the dresses worthy of the highly coveted She and Hem Double Thumbs Up seal of approval. It’s all gone a little bit autumnal outside so I have gone a bit sleeve crazy with all but one dress up for the job of keeping your arms cosy. I would also like to include the warning that this edition is not for penny pinchers! Enjoy!

Beatrice Dress in Cocoa £149 from Poppy Children
Beatrice Dress Chocolate Shop in Plum £149 from Poppy Children
Beatrice Lollipop in Orange £149 from Poppy Children

Holy incr-edible dresses, Batman! Look what we have here! A trio of tasty delights! You may remember way back in Double Thumbs Dresses #4 I stumbled upon Poppy Clothing who base all of their collections on the stories of Poppy and her dog Fred. It’s an adorable concept and one which was duly deserving of the Double Thumbs crown. However, when checking out their new Autumn Winter collection I hadn’t anticipated that Poppy and Fred’s adventures would take them to a chocolate shop! A CHOCOLATE SHOP! This just got serious! I simply couldn’t pick between the lollies, chocolate and more chocolate on offer (what normal person can?) and so decided to do the unprecedented and present you with three dresses.

I adore everything. The lovely shapes, the beautiful colours, the gorgeously playful prints and the really brilliant way that Poppy themselves style their dresses with jazzy tights and cute cardigans. I’m going to have to begin saving my penny sweets as sadly the prices, although surely justified, are currently slightly beyond my reach. I seriously recommend checking out the website as they also sell some lovely, and affordable, accessories.

Navy Belted Panda Dress £30.40 (reduced from £38) by H! Henry Holland for Debenhams

You’ll cause pandamonium in this wonderful dress from the beautiful H! by Henry Holland for Debenhams! He’s never one to shy away from a novelty print, not unlike myself, and has certainly excelled himself with this one.

Accessories to Murder #8

Hi Hemsters! Sorry it has been a pretty inexcusably long time since Accessories to Murder #7, I was swept away in a blustering sea of sale shopping and summer holiday japes and have neglected last months adorable accessories somewhat. Anguish no longer as I am back in the glittery saddle ready to ride off into the shimmering sunset of stylish stuff!

She and Home: Candy Kittens

CK2

It takes a lot to get the two of us out of bed on a Bank Holiday Monday but, bleary eyed and a little dazed, we found ourselves doing  just that this week as we were up at the crack of dawn and heading towards Cabot Circus for the launch of the Candy Kittens Pop Up shop. Yeah boi!

CK3CK4CK5CK12

For the uninitiated, Candy Kittens is a confectionery company, pioneered by Jamie Laing of BAFTA winning Made In Chelsea fame. Jamie definitely fancies himself as a bit of a modern day Willy Wonka and wants to make candy cool again by marketing it towards young people. Although it primarily markets itself as a confectionery business, Candy Kittens also has a flourishing fashion line and judging by the shoppers we witnessed, it’s very popular! You can also find such things as iPhone cases, beach balls and pencils nestled among the sweeties! All of which are all emblazoned with the Candy Kittens logo or one of Jamie’s often spoken catch phrases from Made in Chelsea. There is such a great variety on offer that it’s actually a bit of a one stop candy-cane pink lifestyle shop and it works perfectly with Jamie’s energetic personality.

Victoria: Much like the recent Bella Sorella event that we attended, where Jo wasn’t sure if a clothing range associated with TOWIE would be her thing,  when asked if I fancied heading along to Made in Chelsea’s  Jamie Laing’s Candy Kittens pop up launch, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect! Having never seen the show, I had a quick Google and discovered that Candy Kittens is less about kittens and much more about candy, though unfortunately not shaped like kittens. I can deal with that…just! I knew the brand would be fun and bright, so I thought this sunshine yellow River Island woollen dress would be quite fitting. I wore some brown M&S tights and my brogues are from my go to sensible shoe shop, Clarks. My gorgeous bicycle necklace is from Oliver Bonas and my super cute blue floral day bag is from Cath Kidston. Accessories to Murder #6

The sun has got his hat on, but unfortunately it’s sold out everywhere, so I won’t feature it this weeks in A2M6!

The past six weeks of Accessories to Murder have flown by, a lot like the little girl hanging from the delightful balloon brooch pictured below. This beautiful brooch was handmade by MyBearHands, who has an absolutely cracking collection on Etsy. I really love all of the goodies in this collection and have my eye on several of the necklaces.

Fly Away balloon brooch, £18.00, MyBearHands via Etsy.

Oliver Bonas seems to have mastered something which I thought was impossible, and that is how to successfully sell clothes, accessories, homeware, furniture and gifts all under one roof. They do it, and they do it well. I can’t think of another shop where I would actively seek to buy both a pretty summer dress and a wooden bedside cabinet. I’ll certainly be spending a lot of time there at the moment because they have a fantastic sale, which includes this little beauty. For under £10 you should definitely try and grab an antelope necklace before he leaps off!

Antelope Enamel Necklace, £9, Oliver Bonas.

Sticking with the animal theme for a moment, I give you this sleek fox belt from Yumi (who also have a great sale on!). I’m on the lookout for great belts, as I always seem to stick to my trusty waist cincher from Dorothy Perkins, so this foxy number really caught my eye. It’s very versatile and comes in black or brown.

Fox Belt, £12, Yumi.

The last animal inspired accessory is an item that every girl should own. Never again will you have to be more than an arms length away from a quick G&T fix with this zoo themed hip flask from Topshop. It’s so fun, so flamin-go and get one!

Zebra Hip Flask, £20, Topshop.

So, you are going to need somewhere to store that sneaky tipple. Here are my current top two bags of the moment. A lovely red structured bag with a scalloped trim and handy handle from Glasgow based Hey Sailor, and an absurdly pretty vintage inspired clutch from Oh My Love. Oh how I love it!

Double Thumbs Dresses #4

Blimey! It’s only time for our weekly round-up of all those lovely dresses that receive the highly coveted She and Hem Double Thumbs Up seal of approval. Let’s get started!

Beatrice Dress Sweet shop Capped Sleeve £119 from Poppy

If you have read our recent Height of Fashion blog post you will remember that I made a wondrous discovery in Poppy, who essentially make beautiful little girls dresses but for big girls too. Each of their designs are based around the adventures of a little girl called Poppy and her dog Fred, and your dress even comes with its own storybook for you to read. It really is as great as it sounds and ideally I would like to own everything they sell. Of all of their dresses this 1950’s inspired sweet shop dress is at the top of my list. It features row upon row of illustrated sweet jars, making you look good enough to eat.

Fruity Prom Dress £58 by Sugarhill Boutique from Oliver Bonas

This fruity little number from Sugarhill Boutique will really get your mouth watering. It is made out of a lovely silky fabric making it perfect for summer and that gathered waist will be super flattering, hurrah! If that wasn’t enough to get your juices flowing it also has a very very fun lattice design on the back, which is something you can remind yourself when you are justifying the £58 price tag. Sugarhill Boutique have a slightly different version of this dress on their own website (here) but this particular number, complete with fun lattice, is another brilliant Oliver Bonas exclusive.

Lucy Dress Blue Boat Print £59 by Emily and Fin from Kiki’s Boutique

There will be no need to fish for compliments in this boat print number by Emily and Fin from Kiki’s Boutique. This a-line dress is gathered at the waist and has a concealed zip for maximum flattery potential. Like all great dresses it also has pockets so that you can safely stowaway your Fisherman’s Friend or, more likely, your Vaseline.

Miss Real Blue and Gold Floral Jacquard Bow Dress £29.99 from New Look

Well hello there shiny new party dress! This vintage inspired beauty from New Look is a real gem. It’s just gorgeous and looks so much more expensive than £29.99, dontchathink? It has a beautiful print and shape, plus it has a great big bow on the neckline.  Throw on some heels and gold jewelry and you, my dear reader, are the best dressed gal in the room. Don’t go looking for it in store though, you’ll look like a right wally, as it’s only available online.

Time for Tea 1950’s Day Dress £85 from 20th Century Foxy

Before you start a stampede for this stunning tea themed tea dress I would like to point out that it is currently sold out. Please don’t hurt me! I couldn’t resist sharing it with you as it has possibly the most darling print I have ever seen! With it’s classic 50’s shape and cross over neckline it would be the perfect dress for swooshing around in. Perhaps if we all think positive thoughts the nice people at 20th Century Foxy might make some more just for us and then we can all sit around and be fabulous together.

Oasis Rose Print Dress £75 exclusive to ASOS

Oasis really are on a roll at the moment! It’s just beautiful dress after beautiful dress, I can barely keep up! This blooming marvelous rose print dress is exclusive to ASOS and despite being big on the florals it isn’t too chintzy. It has an underwear friendly cut out detail on the back and a low, but not too low, neckline.  As usual the only thorny issue is the price as at £75, being an Oasis fan isn’t exactly fun for the finances. The good news is that both ASOS and Oasis know how to throw a killer sale, so hopefully with their powers combined, we will be able to go on a dress frenzy in the near future.

Lace Skater Dress £48 from Oasis

See what I mean? Another beautiful Oasis number. This simple skater dress is just so pretty and easy to wear. Oh how I do love a dress that can just be thrown on anytime and will look great. It is also the colour of sunshine meaning you will cheer up everyone you encounter, guaranteed.

That’s all for this week but before I go I would cheekily like to ask you to consider nominating us for Best New Fashion Blog in the upcoming Cosmopolitan Blog Awards 2013 with Next. You can nominate us, or any other blogs you love, by clicking on the shiny pink thing below.

Toucan play that game

My heart is all of a flutter for the many  bird prints that are currently taking over the high street. Here are some of my current favourites!

Fiesta Flamingo Dress – Coral £48 from Sugarhill Boutique

First up is the zesty little flamingo number from Sugarhill Boutique. It will be fabulous fun to wear in the summer months (if and when they arrive) and would also be perfect for the current climate when teamed with tights and a denim jacket. The back also has a really unusual criss cross detailing which is an added bonus.

Zatchel Flamingo Print Bag £120 available exclusively from Oliver Bonas

Sticking with flamingos, next we have this incredible Zatchel, which is an Oliver Bonas exclusive. I consider £120 a lot of money to be spending on a bag but I have heard such great things about Zatchel that I am definitely tempted. I can just imagine the looks of envy I would receive on parading around town with this bag. FlamingWOAH, ammiright?

Orla Kiely Love Bird Print Skirt £58 from People Tree

Orla Kiely can do no wrong in my eyes and her collection for People Tree is no exception. I have spent many hours of drooling over her website so it’s a nice change to be drooling over something which isn’t completely out of my budget. This love bird print skirt is top of my wish list.

Bird Song Print Dress £29 by Poem

Back to Oliver Bonas and this Bird Song dress by their  in house brand Poem. This dress looks so easy to wear! You could just throw it on and go. A perfect weekend dress. I really love the little bow belt too. Good work, Bonas.

Toucan Print Shorts from £30 Yumi

SHORTS! TOUCAN PRINT SHORTS! WITH A BOW! I got very excited when I saw these on the Yumi site and then I tried to imagine how the devil I would get away with wearing them. I’m not sure I can get away with them but I might have to go in and try them on – just to be sure.

Peach Bamboo Bird Tights £10 from Topshop

I have really got to stop buying tights but it’s so difficult when presented with cuties like these! I find Topshop tights to be some of the best quality on the high street and these pretty bird print tights are like nothing I own.

Bryony Dress £55 from Monsoon

Here we have my perfect birdy work dress from Monsoon. It looks so lovely and light to wear! It’s a good length, it has sleeves (!), a tie waist and cute little buttons too.

Puffin Beach Skirt £22 from Vintage Style Me

Back to the fun stuff now and look at this puffin print skirt from Style Vintage Me. It’s just all kinds of adorable and makes me want to go on holiday right now.

White Birds Scarf Watch £52 from Olivia Burton

I have always been a bit useless about wearing watches, either forgetting to put them on in the morning or losing them, but since receiving an Olivia Burton watch for Christmas this is no more! I actually understand what it is to feel naked without a watch! This bird print scarf watch looks perfect for summer and I really enjoy the idea of being able to tie my strap in a bow.
